It's amazing that about an hour after I posted this message I found the solution!! So joining this group helped :-) I found a 'PCS Intel EV-DO 1.0' modem

Samsung CDMA/EVDO mobile as modem on Mac OS 10.4
I recently purchased a Samsung M369 CDMA/EVDO cellphone here in India. The phone connected smoothly on my Mac Mini running OS 10.6 through Bluetooth and USB

I've been using the driver from here https://github.com/failberg/osx-pl2303 which has been very much more stable for me with 10.6 and works in 64-bit kernel

Thanks for the apple link. The download on the prolific site, even though it claims to include a 64 bit driver, is still the same old driver that's been there
