Jean,
Years ago I wrote an interface between Magic en msMappoint. A routeplanning
package from Microsoft where you can plot your own points etc with com calls. I
displayed it in Magic with its activex component.
Just an idea...

Subject: [magicu-l] [magic-l] brainstorming feasability for eDev or UniPaas for
Maritime tracking software
Hi magicians!
We are doing a new project involving AIS vessel-tracking, which in a simplified
nutshell means displaying the positions, (as well as bearing, speed etc.) of
ships on a map, from information that comes from standardized radio transponders
all large ships carry.
This is an example of an AIS system displaying ship positions around Greece:

Here is a live AIS map provided by a University in Greece, fed data by AIS
receivers all over the world
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/
We already have AIS data from our own receiver coming in and being fed into a
SQL database on a server. I think we are going to build our own custom software
interface to display it for a variety of reasons, and we are considering a lot
of options.
I'd basically need to display a map, and on the map about 200 objects, which are
ships normally displayed as triangles (indicating the ships bearing). The map
would be updated from the data about every two minutes or so. The map and the
ships need to be scalable so you can zoom in and out like on Google maps (in
fact many of the existing AIS systems use google maps and / or google earth /
Microsoft earth as a background, though we really only need local charts /
mapping.
I think most of this would be pretty easy to do in Magic, I've actually done
little games and such, with the exception of the triangle shape for the ship,
plus usually a line indicating direction and speed. I don't think Magic does
triangles though I realize I could make some with triangles etc. that would be
kind of clumsy / kluudgy.
I think we could probably do this easily enough in Flex, but I was wondering
what the options might be for UniPaas or for regular eDev using some elegant
technique I hadn't thought of. I really still haven't played with UniPaas at all
so I don't know what it's capabilities are. I'm interested in any ideas the
creative minds of Magic-l could come up with on this.
