Hello, everybody!

Today, I downloaded MAGic 8.0 Demo version to evaluate a copy of MAGic
to see if it is a good one for my girlfriend who is a LP-Windows user.
Well, I downloaded this then, ran an IntallShield program. I used an
automatic installation then, rebooted as it is recommended. I waited for
my Windows ME to finish re-loading programs. After that is done, I
double-click an icon that has a white background with a black letter of
"M". I tried to double-click, unfortunately, I see no magnifications run
so, I tried double-click again, but still not working! I tried to read
README.TXT to see what is going on? It does not say what happens if I
try to run MAGic 8.0 but nothing comes up. It is weird that it did
nothing when I double-click on "M" icon!!! What is going on with it? Did
I install something incorrectly? I wonder about that. Thank you!!!

Dear list members,

I surfed this weekend along the web sites of some screen magnifier
companies. And found some news that I thought I should share with you.

First, Peter this will disappoint you probably, but Dolphin has released
their new version of SuperNova/Lunar/LunarPlus/Hal. But you wrote their
were still some bugs in it. Probably they decided to release it so they
have a product that supports Windows XP.

Now the other big screen magnifier company, AI Squared has announced they
are going to release version 7.1 shortly. Some good things are in that
version. Like they use the ViaVoice text-to-speech Engines. I don't know
if that means that they will skip the TruVoice text-to-speech Engines (L&H
the company which made them is broke). But another good thing. Well I
think Bas has to agree with me is: It inclueds support for JAVA
(Great!). If it doesn't have to many bugs that a good reason for me to
upgrade since I have to use Java for my study.

Well Peter, I hope this is good news.

greetings,

Kees

Hi Kees,

Dolphin seems to be very hurried to release version 5.01 of their
products Lunar, LunarPlus, Hal and Supernova.
It is strange, that they announce the release of version 5.01 on
November 30, 2001 and on the same date releases version 5.01 beta 12?

BTW: Most of the problems in previous beta version of Supernova 5.01
seems to be solved in beta 12.

It looks like they solved a lot of basic problems and include the
suggestions I did to them.
But also this version includes some bugs, that hopely are be solved in
the real release.

Regards Peter Verhoeven

Hi,

Dolphin Computer Access has released version 5 of Lunar, LunarPlus, Hal
and Supernova on November 30, 2001.
It is strange, that on that same date beta 12 of the same product was
released for the beta testers.

Lunar is a professional screen magnifier, that magnifies from 2 to 32
times.
LunarPlus adds speech to Lunar.
Hal is the screen reader from Dolphin for access via speech and braille
display.
Supernova combines screen reading and screen magnification in one
package.

New features in version 5:

- Version 5 runs on Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 and Windows XP. There are
no longe separate version for Windows 95/98/ME and Windows NT/2000.

- Better access to reading web pages via Internet Explorer. After a page
is loaded in Internet Explorer the so called virtual focus automatically
is activated and allow the user to read the page by cursoring through
the web page. The feature include automatic page scroll.
Tables in web pages are now read correct, like we already know from Jaws
and Window-Eyes.
In the latest beta version I saw reading pages with a braille display
was not always correct. On a lot of pages auto scrolling does not work
and on some pages text isn't displayed at all on the braille display.

- Version 5 includes an Update via Internet features, that let hte user
easily look for updates.

- Map files are now used to make individual programs accessible. Each
map file can include its own hotkeys.
The concept of map files make programs, that were difficult to access in
earlier versions of Dolphin products, more accessible.

- There are now standard and professional versions of Hal and Supernova.
The professional version includes the possibility to create own map
files.

AiSquared has announced the release of ZoomText 7.1 and Bigshot 2.1 in
mid-december.
ZoomText is the market leading professional screen magnifiers for all
Windows operating systems. BigShot is the magnification solution for
people who need magnification between 1 and 2 times.

New in ZoomText Xtra 7.1:

- Full support for Windows XP;
- IBM ViaVoice speech synthesizer;
- Interface for Dragon's naturally speaking;
- Support for Java applications.

Hi Peter
I thought AiSquared was going to do a no charge update to ZoomText to make
it compatible with Windows XP. Do you know if 7.1 is an update or an upgrade
that has to be purchased?

Hi Doug,

ZoomText 7.1 is an upgrade, that is not free of charge.
Version 7.1 realy includes great new features like the ViaVoice speech
synthesizer and Java access, so I understand and agree with a charged
upgrade.

For people in north america AiSquared also offer the possibility of an
anual service agreement. For level 1 this cost $80 for level 2 $149. You
get all updates and upgrades send to you during a year.
In my opinion this means, that if you now order such an agreement you
get version 7.1 and version 8 for $149.
If this is not right AiSquared, please correct me?

You can find more information about this service agreement at:
http://www.aisquared.com

Applies to:
ZX7-users who want to run Java Applets within Netscape 6/Mozilla 0.9.x
using the Sun JRE Plug-in 1.3.x

Symptoms:
If an Applet starts and ZX7 is active, then your screen-output becomes a
mess.

Resolution:
1. Temporary deactivate ZX7.
2. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Java Plug-in 1.3.x.
3. In the "Basic" tab you find the textfield "Java runtime parameters".
Add the following to this textfield: -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
4. Click the "Apply" button.
5. Close the window by clicking the [X] icon (upper-right corner).
6. Reactivate ZX7.
7. Restart your computer.

After restarting your Applets run like any other application, except
with the lack of cursor tracking. To enable cursor tracking make sure
that the cursor blinks inside your Applet, then press Shift-Alt-D. Your
cursor should be detected within 5 seconds.

I hope that we don't need this HOWTO anymore as soon as 7.1 is released,
but in the mean time this is the way to fix it.

[WANTED] HOWTO fix ZX7 cursor tracking in Netscape 6/Mozilla 0.9.x under

You forgot to mention the best: Gnome-2 will become the standard desktop
of Red Hat Linux, SUN Solaris, HP UX, Compaq Tru64 and IBM AIX!!!
This means free unified access to low vision users in all Unix/Linux
environments!!

The moment will come that we no longer depend on Mr Gates and Mr Jobbs
anymore. We will have a fair choice between the open Unix/Linux systems
and the proprietary vendor-locked systems. It's only a matter of time...

Kind regards,
Bas

What aspect of ZoomText will not operate? I'm assuming you mean the
DocReader feature as opposed to it not magnifying at all but could you
clarify (including in what way a certain feature is not working)? Also, if
it's the DocReader have you tried using it in a word processor to make sure
the problem isn't something other than Acrobat Reader?

So far as I know you can't just download a plugin like you did with Acrobat
4.0. You need to download the accessible version. If you go to this link:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html you will be shown three
steps. In the fist step there is a check box labelled "Include option for
searching PDF files and accessibility support (longer download)". You need
to check that and then continue with the download process.

Hi all,

Acrobat reader 4 was good usable with the Accessibility plug-in, but for
the new version they made some changes. They deleted the accessiblility
portions for the general user and made them avalable with some screen
readers. Not ZoomText btw. One screen reader which is supported is GW
Micro's Win Eyes.

I've downloaded Acrobat Reader 5, and also the "Make Accessible" file
and installed both, and rebooted. I still can't seem to get Zoomtext 7
to operate. I'm probably missing something obvious, but some help would
be appreciated.

For those who may be interested in a "Lifestyle" note, I was interviewed
by the owner of Gypsy Journal, a newspaper for Fulltime RVers, who
number these days about one million, living and traveling around in
their recreation vehicles. Go to www.gypsyjournal.net and click on
Articles in Current Issue, then scroll down to "The Blind Guy" to read.
Includes a picture of my computer setup in the RV.

BTW, I tried twice to post this to the list using the yahoogroups
posting address, and it bounced each time. This is posted to the email
address which comes at the top of the digest, and is the "old" egroups
posting address.

Hi Ken,

Well, I took a closer look and I can't believe what I found. Your ZoomText
DocReader isn't going to work because of the way Adobe is still working
their program. I can use a screenreader to read the information but not
ZoomText. The only solution I can think of is if you go to their web site
using the link that you posted you can find instructions on how to get a PDF
document converted to an accessible format that will read in ZoomText but
that's all there is I'm afraid. I'm quite disappointed. I thought Adobe had
come further than this.

That's true. Freedom Scientific and GW Micro did make a point of contacting
Adobe to make sure it's accessible with their products. However, it seems to
me that making it accessible only with some adaptive technology products is
rather short-sighted on the part of the company. Just my biased opinion
though <grin>.

I'm disappointed Zoomtext won't work with the Reader. The immediate
reason I needed it is that I got a "data kit" for my new Motorola v60c
cell phone. The CD came with two User Guides, both of which are in
Adobe Acrobat. The only choice now is to burn a pile of paper and
cartridge ink printing them out, and using my CCTV to read. I called
Motorola, and asked if they had the Guides on a HTML web page, and was
called back yesterday with the information that they did not. They are
sending me a "large print" copy of the phone user guide, but they do not
have print copies to send out for the two "TrueSync" user guides
included on the "data kit" CD. Lousy foresight by this large company.

Acrobat 4 with the accessable plug in is workable with zoomtext and doc
reader.

The best approach to PDF files seems to be that taken by kurzweil k1000. The
latest version of k1000 has a virtual printer. If any file can be printed is
can be "printed" to k1000 and then recognized by the k1000 OCR programs and
magnified image view settings. It works with acrobat or any other program
that allows printing, although some PDF files have printing locked out..

Subject: Demo Supernova 5.01 available

Hi,

A demo of Supernova 5.01 including a lot of bugs, is now available.

Supernova is a combined product from Dolphin Computer Access including the
screen reader Hal (speech and braille support) and the screen magnifier Lunar.
Supernova is compatible with Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP.

The software performance and stability seems to be well, but espacially on
web pages it is a fustrating product.
After a page is loading it automatically jumps to a virtual focus
mode. This mode simulates a kind of input caretm which should make it
possible to cursor through the web page like we already know from Jaws and
Window-Eyes. This Virtual Focus mode does not work well on a lot of web
pages. On pages with complex frame constructions the auto page scroll does
not work. On other pages not all information is displayed on the braille
display.
The virtual focus mode is not user intuitive and the user interface of
Supernova is as user unfriendly as it already was in previous releases.
In my opinion it is shameful, that products with this kind of quality are
released.

Dolphin Computer Access cicked me out of their beta list, because they
accused me of hi-jacking the list.
Their new strategy seems to be to ignoring The Screen Magnifiers Homepage
by not answering on any questions I asked them.

The Screen Magnifiers Homepage want to be an independent organization and
critical follows the access industry.
I'm not an extension of any company and I'm not hi-jacking any beta test list.
Some companies in the access industry seems to believe, that they can
dictate how visually impaired must think about them. This kind of behavior
make the call for more independence of the access industry louder.

We visually impaired can think for ourselves and we have all an opinion. If
we give this opinion we call that freedom and not hi-jacking.

The Screen Magnifiers Homepage shall continue to give this opinion. The
only problem is, that I can no longer take companies serious, that do not
want to communicate with their critics.

You can download the Supernova 5.01 UK version at:

Dear list members,

Now that the 2001 poll for the best Magnifier is almost over, I was
interested in current pricing and platform support on the market of
magnifiers as well as the quality of product web sites. Please see the
following table for a comparison.

Product: Platform: Price (US$):
Provision32 Win NT/2000 395
Magnum Win 95 ???
MAGic Win 9x/ME 295
MAGic Win NT/2000 395
Lunar Win 9x/ME 295
Lunar Win32 (*) 595
ZX Level 1 Win32 (*) 395
inLARGE Mac OS 6-9 ???

* = XP currently not supported

Web sites:
The Magnum page is the worst of all by far. Is Magnum a discontinued
product? Its page (www.artictech.com/magnum.htm) only talks about
DOS/Win3.1/Win95 compatibility and there is no documentation, FAQ or
other online support available.

There is also no online support available for Provision32 and inLARGE.
Furthermore, the inLARGE page doesn't offer any informatin about
licensing, pricing and sales. I guess Alva hates to sell this product ;-)

of the ZXFortunately the product pages for Lunar, MAGic and ZX offer
comprehensive information about the product. But what about MAGic-users
that need full Win32 compatibility? Do they have to buy 2 licenses @
$690? That's 175% of the ZX price! A full Win32 Lunar license costs 150%
of the ZX price.

Is there anybody who can explain these extreme differences in pricing?
Do MAGic and Lunar offer so much more than ZX? I can't tell, because I'm
a ZX user.

Cheers,
Bas

p.s. Please supply the missing prices. Thanks!

inLARGE is available for $295.00

I'm a bit confused by your question about pricing. MAGic users pay $295 for
Win 9X without speech and $395 for Win NT. There is no current timeline for
MAGic to work in Windows XP. MAGic is actually less expensive than ZoomText
unless it's for the NT environment.

I have to admit that I do like the auto-smoothing of MAGic over the image I
get from ZoomText and MAGic does have some nice speech features. It does
have a few glitches that can be annoying too though.

Hi,

The AWARD for the best screen magnifier for Windows in 2001 goes to
ZoomText Xtra from AiSquared.

The poll for the best screen magnifier is an anual event on The Screen
Magnifiers Homepage since 1998. AiSquared receives the AWARD for ZoomText
Xtra for the fourth time.

In the 2001 poll ZoomText Xtra got 48.8% of the votes.
Loser in the 2001 poll is Dolphin Computer Access. Their products range
Lunar, LunarPlus and Supernova got 22.5 % of the votes, 20% less than in 2000.

Interesting is the increase in popularity of MAGic from Freedom Scientific.
In the 2001 poll they got 20% of the votes, 15% more than in 2000. Also if
we keep the product match between MAGic and LP-Windows in mind, MAGic grow
10% in popularity.
