kathy,

Yes, I like PocketViewer very much. My understanding it is not great for
the bookworm readers. I also was disappointed that I can not use it
outdoor during the day hours because I can not see on the screen unless I
am in the dark.

Yes, it is worth to have better than glass magifier. Sometime I forget
to bring it with me then I felt helpless. Ofcourse, I must have it until
I can not see anymore.

Smiling,
Leslie--

Yes, I've run across lists that don't like top posting, and others that
demand the full thread be quoted over and over again. But I think we can all
think frugally and be considerate of our particular readership and not force
everyone to page through screen after screen of giant text before we get to
the meat of the message as it were.

Outside in the daytime is always too bright for me to see much of anything.
However, creating a shaded shelter with your jacket or hat brim improves
things a bit. also using the white on black rather than black on white is
easier to see in brighter light settings.

Hello kathy.

Do you have the black and white version or the colour version. I heard
that Pulse Data has a colour verion of the Pocket Viewer now and that
its price was coming down from being a whole lot more than the black and
white.

Kathy,

yes, that was i did as you said. It was very difficult to read the bus

I've got the black and white version. It was the demo unit for a local
salesman. He prefers the one from Freedom Scientific with all its bells and
whistles and color, so he doesn't show this one any more. I was thrilled
since I don't see color and can barely hear bells.

It is B&W and W&B, no color.

NOTE: there are a few new pocket cctv like PocketViewer. I like one but I
forget its name. It is better than PocketViewer. Yes, it has color, too

As I said, the pocket CCTV that Freedom Scientific is selling is a color
version with some contrast adjustment as well. This is the one that took
the place of the Pocket Viewer for the salesman I bought my demo unit from.
In my personal opinion it wasn't better, which is why I bought the Pocket
Viewer. It has color. I don't see color. Many people with central vision
loss don't see color. It was also a bit larger I think, and has this little
tilting piece at the camera which lets you turn the camera on, and also
raise it up to do a bit of signing or highlighting under the camera. I
found I ran out of hands with both units, but I liked how the Pocket Viewer
worked better. As with everything else in access technology, it's totally
individual.

There's always BigShot (which is basicly a scalled-down version of
ZoomText). You can get a free trial here:

http://aisquared.com/Products/BigShot/BSFreeTrial/BSFreeTrial.htm

But I'd recomend just saving up your money and going with ZoomText since
(as they say) you get what you pay for.

Big Shot only magnifies 2X, which is not enough for most low vision users.

I was helping with a workshop for the Low Vision group over in Sequim. I
downloaded several low cost programs to help enlarge the information for
different computer applications.

I was truly impressed by Web Eyes, to the point that I am buying it for my
own use. I use JAWS personally, as my vision is way too limited to use it
all the time for computer work. But Web Eyes works extremely well in
conjunction with my JAWS 3.7U, and I am very happy for the option to use the
enlarged images for forms, quick searches, and the like.

I have used Zoomtext for many years, and for my needs, considering I just
want the enlargement for web Browsing, Web Eyes is a much better deal.
Sometimes you get a whole lot more for your lots more money than you
actually want or need. Don't lose sight of that truth either.

This cost thing is definitely interesting and that's one of the reasons
that I'm happy I've made the switch to Mac OSX (yeah meant having to
get another comp but my win box was pretty dead anyway). Zoom offers
full screen magnification, tracks the cursor in all of the apple apps
except terminal, and you get text to speech as well in all apps with
just a left click of the mouse. And there'll even be more screen
reading features in the next OS (10.4, Tiger), (called voice over
which I'm previewing now) that will include typing echo, event
descriptions and will work with keyboard navigation.

As for windows, there is the cheaper alternative of using
magnifier/narrator as well.

I tried to download Toggle Mouse from the Magifiers Webpage but not work.
My system is Windows XP sp2.

Anyway, I am looking for the software of the mouse or pointer. I dislike
"popup" under the pointer because I can not read it because it shows out
side of the screen display. I would like to move the "popup" message on
the pointer or "popup" message in the central display.

I also want to "disabled" and "enabled" popup message when the pointer is
on.

Unfortunately Microsoft's Narrator is only intended to give speech enough to
install a screen reader. While it will read the entire screen, this gives
too much information as we are saying more and more oftern these days. It
also doesn't provide useful navigation help to someone who really cannot use
their vision for computer use at all. While there are some low cost access
helps, Narrator from Microsoft is only a very minimal help at best.Better
than nothing? Well, maybe if you are, as I am, such a geek your oxygen comes
from your computer, but in the real world, not much help at all.

Yeah but it's almost as capable as the screenreader part of ZtX2.

Is that Pico from Telesensory?

That is one I have just ordered. Yes, it has a color mode, as well as a B&W
mode, plus some new updated features.

Scott,

yes, I know it. I like it, too. But it is not "pocket CCTV". I also
have MaxEye portable CCTV from German. I like it because it is LED
display. yes it is only one which has the LED display but it is not more
produce. But I use it fading because I use PocketViewer more and more
because it is easy to carry with me.

At the risk of contaminating this list with what appears to be a
solicitation, I will say that my company is a re-seller for the PocketViewer
as well as 3 other hand-held video magnifiers, the PICO from Telesensory,
The Compact from Optelec, and the Quicklook from Ash Technologies.

The new PocketViewer is a color system.
All 4 different handheld systems retail for $795 + shipping. They vary
slightly in the degree of magnification they offer (5.5x to 8x in flat
position), the battery life (1.25 hours to 2+ hours of continual use) and
the way they handle "writing mode" but in general these are marvelous
devices. They don't demand a distinct focal distance as handheld
(non-video) magnifiers do, consequently they allow for viewing things that
won't allow you to get that correct focal distance away. (e.g. folders in a
lateral file cabinet or unit prices on a store shelf). They are also
incredibly convenient for spot checking items on the spot rather than taking
the item to your CCTV.

I'm happy to answer any questions about specific models off-list.

I understand that. Fortunatly; there are local and govement agencies which
will buy ZoomText for you. :)

-Paul. >>

Richard replies:

Unfortunately, there is a niche category of those considering using
Zoomtext, that do not qualify for local and government assistance
(typically via the Vocational-Rehabilition State Agencies), as they are too
disabled to be considered for employment.

This is where WebEyes, etc. can be of some help.

Has AISquared, and other vendors, considered offering older versions of
their products at reduced cost, to those who cannot afford the latest
versions of their Screen Readers, especially for those with older computer
systems?
