Hello John,

I'm very sorry to hear about your economic situation and I hope that
you will survive this crisis in your own house. I referred to zt 9.1
indeed (my mortgage has a fixed interest rate ;-)).

Take care!

Hello, Bas,

Thank you for your sharing with me about your experience. I understand
about losing cursor tracking no matter what version.

I'm still using ZT 7.11. Reason is -- I am in a bad economy -- can't
afford to pay a lot of money. I must pay for my homeowning costs. Ouch.

Thanks,
Johnny :)

Hello John,

I contacted Ai2 the other day about this issue and they are working on
it. The last update of zt fixed most ff tracking issues for me.
Sometimes zt just looses track of the cursor and then a Control + Alt
+ Shift + D helps sometimes.

Regards,
Bas

Dear Everybody:

I installed fireFox 3.0.3 last Saturday night while I stay home to catch
up my rests after a flu. Anyway, I noticed that I'm having a cursor
tracking problem only on FireFox3. When I type for example, I click on
an address box to highlight it. I erased out then, type:
http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups. I cannot see what I type. I must move
ZoomText to find a cursor where I last typed. Also, in message box, the
same problem. I have to move the ZoomText to find the cursor where I
last typed.

I have absolute no problem with two other browsers. Internet Explorer 6
and SeaMonkey 1.1.x. I still use SeaMonkey. Yes, ZoomText follows the
cursor all the times in Address Box and Message box, too. Also, my
friend uses an old version of FireFox 2.0.0.7, I think is no problem,
too. The only problem with is FireFox3.0.3 that's all.

Does anyone have any problem with FireFox 3.0.3 that won't let ZoomText
to follow your cursor's movements?

Thanks.

You might want to search under Geology hand lenses. You can buy a
fine B&L 10X magnifier for under $50. Any more than $100 is always a
rip-off.

My favorite hand lens is a "blade" on the Victornox Swiss Arny knife.

I'm told diopters is a more accurate way to compare mags. The $3.99 price
would have been a red flag for me.

I do believe magnifiers vary in quality, though I'm not sure how this works.
I had a low vision specialist once show me two magnifiers that were both 10x
power, but I was not able to see the print with one and was able to see it
with the other. He said the difference was the optics, and of course the one
that was better was much more expensive, by several hundred dollars. So I do
think price makes a difference in quality, which could affect the resulting
image quality.

Do you mind mentioning which company you bought it from? I'm just curious.

The closer the magnifier is held to your eye, the greater the magnification
will be. So if you hold the magnifier close to your eye and move the page
you are looking at for focusing instead of moving the magnifier, you will get
greater magnification.

Magnifiers should really be selected based on their diopter power, this is
the standard mewsurement. There is no standard for magnification.

Thanks for the information. These magnifiers do say 8X and 10X they don't give
the diopter. They are round and they are clear image just not as large as they
should be.

Magnifiers vary extremely in quality. If you have ever been fitted with
glasses you'll remember the better worse game which those of us with low
vision usually only can play in full diopter increments, but which others
play in quarter diopter jumps. Better worse adn be at the same magnification
with other perameters changed in the lense. Also a well cut, finely made
lens is going to give clearer magnification than the plastic one from the
crack-n-the-Jack box (look ma! no copyright infringement)... If you can see
the difference, good magnifying glasses are a better buy. If you can't see
it, don't bother.

There are all sorts of formulas I no longer remember about magnification
because I haven't worked inthe field for decades now. But magnification on
your CCTV is different from that with your hand held lens. 16 diopter
handheld lens will give you 4 X magnification I believe in other words it
takes 4 diopters to increase the image one time height and width. Some
devices such as bar magnifiers only magnify in one direction so you get tall
skinny characters when looking at print with the height magnified and the
width left alone.
So my expensive specticle mounted 65 diopter magnifier is giving me just a
tad over 15X magnification. Do the math as I"m too old for it, but this
means that the 5 X magnifier is 20 diopters and the 8 X is 32 diopters.
Differences can certainly be accounted for by quality of lens and
manufacturing standards. That much of a difference so you'd read better with
the 5X than the 8X...possibly. But be sure you're comparing apples to
apples. Is the 8X really 8X or is it 8 diopters which would only give you
2X? That would make a huge difference.

If you wish to prolong this headache go read
http://www.bertech.com/product8/magnifi_notes.htm
for the details in other words probably more accurate than mine.

A lesson here is if you ccan't afford the expensive, good quality lenses,
get a stronger lens in the lower priced version than you think you need and
give it a go.

While they were saying among themselves it cannot be done, it was done.

I got the right magnifier. I got a 10X pocket magnifier and it magnifies less
than the 5X Bausch & Lomb I have been using. Maybe the Chinese supplier
misrepresented them to the company. I could not believe that they could sell a
10X pocket magnifier for $3.99. I did contact them and they Sid I was the only
one to have complained.

Hmm. There's also this:

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060119152725322

I don't think it's quite ready for consumer use, but it looks like the
capability is more or less there within the system to render the user
interface with bigger fonts.

This is a problem at higher zoom levels.

This is another option:

But I don't think there's anything of ZoomText's quality. See also this

so are there any good screen magnifiers for mac?

i know there is one build in, but the picture becamed very ugly

Since these UMPCs can Windows XP, they should run just about any
magnifier. But this is an easy test: take a USB drive with your
favorite magnifier(s) and try them out at the store on some UMPCs. (I
recommend something free, open source, like Virtual Magnifying Glass,
but then again I'm biased, being the author of this critter ;-). The
only concern might be the video hardware support, which could impact
those magnifiers that depend on DirectX support for overlays, for
instance, so the free apps may fare better in such a case.

Many thanks,
-Chris O

Has anyone heard of, or seen, a screen magnifier running on the latest
generation of Ultra Mobile PC's that use the Intel Atom processor?
Speciffically, I am taliking about systems that can run XP. These are
PC's such as the Acer Aspire One, ASUS EEE, MSI Wind, Lenovo Ideapad
S10, or the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. These PC's are great because they are
lightweight, have long battery life, solid-state drives, and are
relatively inexpensive. The downside, of course, is small screen size
of 7 to 10 inches.

Vision loss shouldn't prevent you from enjoying today's
technology, like computers and the Internet. The agency of the month,
VISIONS
<http://www.afb.org/seniorsite.asp?SectionID=64&TopicID=376&SubTopicID=1\
45> , shared the following tips to keep you up and running and surfing
the Web.

If you have high-speed Internet service and you use a computer with the
Microsoft Windows operating system, you can access free speech output
with screen magnification at: www.satogo.com <http://www.satogo.com/> .
This web site loads a free program that is a screen reader called System
Access. You also have the option of using basic full-screen
magnification, as long as you are connected to the Internet.

If you do not have high-speed Internet service but do have a computer
running the Windows 2000, XP, or Vista operating system, you can use
built-in accessibility that includes magnification and a free program
within Windows called Narrator, which provides speech output. While the
speech provided is not the best, it can get you started and you can then
decide if you want to invest in a software program with better speech
quality or more magnification options.

You can also download free demonstration copies of many different
commercial software packages that will provide you with screen
enlargement or screen reading capability for use on a trial basis. For
more information about screen magnification and speech options, check
out the article, Using A Computer
<http://www.afb.org/seniorsite.asp?SectionID=67&DocumentID=3286> .

Microsoft Windows offers various accessibility modifications. If you
find installing these modifications too complex, try recruiting a
computer-savvy relative, friend, or local professional tech support
agency to help you. For more information on other aspects of Windows
accessibility, visit the Microsoft web site
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/accessibility/default.mspx#ERD\
> .

Microsoft Windows is not the only operating system that offers
significant built-in accessibility features. Both LINUX
<http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Accessibility-HOWTO/introduction.html> and Apple
<http://www.apple.com/accessibility/> also offer assistive technology
such as screenreaders, magnifiers, and more.

The following is from music software weekly, I thought it might be of some
use to some visually impaired computer users.
