Hi Ron,

I can only say that for me, it is really simple to just do basic
archiving and therefore do not need to ask for help with it much.
When I do it is usually, because I need feedback on doing
something so that I can better assist a customer.

I suppose others are busy and don't have the time to answer
questions. Joseph N, and a few others are pretty quick to answer
things though. For those that do not get a reply after a few
days, if it were me, I would post the message again.

Happy Bag'n!

Your leaving something out or I'm dead tired from being up all night,
again... :)

I can only assume that you are using the same hard drive and that you
only upgraded to XP, correct? Are the old messages in NetScape format?
I'm trying to understand the connection between where the messages are
now and why the tech said they are lost. What mail program were they
in in Win98 and where are they now? :)

I have a huge (92 mb) Outlook Express Mac folder backed up on a PC/Mac

do I get Mailbag to recognize it? I tried searching the archives
without success.

Jules,

Assuming that the Mac OE format is the same as the MS OE format, just point
Mailbag at the file on your CD. It might even be possible to import the file
into OE in Windows.

If Windows can read the CD, Mailbag has at least a chance to get at the
data. Mailbag should be able to read the data on the CD, but you may need to
copy it to your hard drive for best results of speed, etc. with the size of
the folder. I do not have any OE folders that big, but I do have a Mailbag
mailbox or two of about 20 MB.

If Windows cannot read the CD, you might locate a friend with a Mac, or look
into one of the Windows programs that can read Mac format disks. My dad has
such a program, from 20 years ago that I think they still make in whatever
version, but I do not recall its name.

HTH,

Larry

The structure is similar but the Mac files do not have extensions. I am
going to try examining the files and see what happens if I change the
extensions.

It doesn't import into Windows.

The question we need to ask is before upgrading to WinXP,
were you already running Netscape 7.1?

I think there may be a solution, in that you are not
looking in the right spot for your files.

Hint: do a search for files that end with the string "xslt"

Furthermore, on XP (I assume same as Win2000 which is what I am using)
The Netscape stuff lives in
(local disk, e.g. C:)
Documents and settings
   subdirectory for your username
     subdirectory Mozilla
       subdircetory Profiles
subdirectory Default (<--this could be different for you)
subdirectory (8 char semi random string).slt

for example, mine is: 29x8fy0d.slt

inside THAT subdirectory you will find a subdircetory "Mail"
and inside that you'l find local files.

Now the other thing you need to find (and this may be harder)
is our actualy Mozilla profile file. If you start googling
Mozzila help docs, you'll find some info on this. Suffice it to
say that it does not livce in teh same subdirectory as yoyur
actual mail files do.

Can a whole archive be exported as a single text file? I am testing a
great indexing/search application and while it will read and index my

Lou,

Yes, it can I just tried two methods. It can save it to the NoteTab outline
format (otl), which is a text file with text control characters, and it can
save to a single text file, I used a script called save as CSV and it made
one big file out of it. I do not recall if this is a script that comes with
MailBag or one I got from this list. It does not appear to be a CSV file,
just one big file with one message after another.

Open the desired email archive, or you can do it from you email program's
data file(s), go to the Tools menu and choose Merge Data. This will give
several scripts to choose from, and you can write your own, or get help from
the others in this group.

I am sure there are other ways to get all desired messages into one text
file.

I've tried Poco. It's a very nice program but it does not support UTF-8 and it
doesn't handle HTML in a proper way.
I'm looking for a multiple-account e-mail handler with script tools, but without

The Bat!, from www.ritlabs.com It's rock solid, super fast, can do
more than any other Windows mail client, and do it better. The *only*
drawback is that figuring out how to do some of those things can take
an effort, but the mailing lists (one for users, one for the Beta
versions, and one for OT discussions) are extremely helpful.

Thunderbird is also good. It's the standalone mail client from the
Mozilla folks. I use TB! instead because it has password protection,
more versatile filtering capabilities, and boundless template
possibilities.

Joseph, are you sure it is rock solid? I read their Forum pages and there were
many, many complaints about their latest release.

Read e.g.
http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/forum/read.php?FID=14&TID=317

My problem with PocoMail is the way it handles html and ignores UTF-8 Unicode.
As a result e-mails sent by Poco are more or less illegible at arrival. How does
The bat! perform that basic job?

You can use it without restrictions during 30 days.
Why don't you try it out and/or ask it in TBBETA?

I have tried and/or bought (Poco & The Bat!):

Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Messenger, Pegasus, The Bat!,
PocoMail, Calypso, FoxMail, XPress Plus, OperaMail

I mostly use The Bat!.

In the beginning I did not like it, because it doesn't handle HTMl like OE
does. Pictures that are not included are not shown (downloaded), you have to
click such a message twice to see it in your browser. Although I found this
very irritating in the beginning, I now think this is the right way to handle
mail. Spammers don't like it, of course.

Also, the HTML-editor is still rather basic. I thought I would have found
that to be a problem, but it turned out otherwise.

Simply because it's very time consuming to swim around in a new sophistic
mailclient. It took me 10 hours at least to get used to Poco, to understand it's
paradigma's and to tune it. At the end of the day it proves to fail in what one
can say is the most basic functions of all: it doesn't send the same html as it
shows in its own preview pane, when replying or forwarding mail.
If I should have known that bug on forehand, I shouldn't have started with
PocoMail at all.

On the other hand: I appreciate Mailbag Assistent very much, so I'm forced to
work with one of the email clients chosen by Fookes. That made me think: what's
the experience of Mailbag Users with their mail client of choice?

Thanks for your reaction, but I doubt if The Bat! does a better job than Poco,
when the subject is "proper html" within the program, and when stuff goes out.
Can you send me an html e-mail including an inline pic and an attached pic? Send
it to igor@...

Yes. There have been deficiencies in IMAP processing, but those have
received a lot of attention; while some still might exist, I myself
have not had any problems with it. Many of the comments are from
people testing the most recent Beta versions. The releases are at
least as solid as other s/w; all released s/w have some issues.

The HTML is handled several ways: TB! has its own internal viewer,
which renders extremely well IMO. It will not allow direct connections
to external sources, so there will sometimes be little red X's where
images or web bugs require connections outside the perimeter; this is
good. It's a safety feature which is valuable. The newest releases
also allow HTML composition and editing, although you have to hunt a
little to find how to enable it.

There are a couple of different editors, one of which, which has a
feature called a "free carat" [sp?], takes some getting used to, but,
once you've mastered it, is great. It's true WYSIWYG.

All I can say is that, while there may be some people who have left
The Bat! for other mailers and not returned, I've never heard of them.
Even one person I know, who left for Becky due to reasons I cannot
remember now, has returned to TB! If you don't like it, don't buy it.
Luckily, with Mailbag Assistant, you won't have a problem retaining
access to your message base.

Personally, I love Poco. I wouldn't use any other mail client (scripting
alone is worth its weight in gold).

Of course, I don't use styled msgs. I consider using anything but plain
text like taking a gun and pointing it at your head. Lots would not agree
with me, but if you're serious about communicating with many different kinds
of people on many different kinds of systems, you leave HTML strictly alone
REGARDLESS of your email client.

Indeed! I downloaded The Bat! today and spent an hour to get a first impression
and to do some tests. It seems to be better than PocoMail indeed. I did not find
out yet how to create html templates. There's no button in the template windows
to switch from plain to html (or both).
The creation of filters is much more sophisticated than it is in Poco Mail. But
this is not a final judgement. It will take four to six hours to get an overall
impression and I do not have the time now to do so.

Once upon a time I used Outlook Express. Since MB release 3.5 Mailbag shows

I'm testing now both PocoMail and The Bat. When e-mails from both clients are

What am I doing wrong, or what is Outlook Express doing right for MB ?

I have clickable attachments in the headers of the lower pane of the
main grid when looking at e-mail from The Bat!'s message base.

(Don't know about a Dutch forum, but it's worth checking in with the
main users mailing list for TB! to ask. Also, search the archives
noted at the bottom of the messages in that list for html template
info. I don't use html, but it's likely that the issue has come up.)

How to encode attachments? I tried all three options but none of them offered

But I will now archive some plain-text messages together with their attachments.
HTML based messages keep their inline images not but their attachments.

Hey Maarten:

I agree with Joseph's assessment of TheBat! I test TheBat! beta
software and read what they are intended to fix. Since September
2003 I've only found one glitch that the beta fixed; and that
glitch was introduced by one of the betas releases! What that
means is that I haven't found any problem with regular use of the
     theBat! e-mail client.

I tried PocoMail last summer after version 3.0 came out and its
scripting was very slow. It was even slower when importing
messages. There also was no native PGP support. I like to PGP sign
my messages to let my regular e-mail recipients know that I sent
the e-mail, not some automated virus attack.

I was actually alerted to TheBat! after using Mailbag Assistant. I
use Mailbag scripts twice a week to archive my messages. IMHO
Mailbag and TheBat! complement each other perfectly.

Put it this way, I forgo syncing my e-mail with my Dell Axim
because I prefer TheBat! over Outlook that much. (Outlook comes
     free with each Axim).

Holy shit, this has been the most stupid post I've ever made in my life.
MBA has a scrollbar at the right sight of the header pane. And of course the
clickable attachments were below the visible part of the pane. So they were
there, all of them.

Mea Culpa.

But ehhhh, May be that header pane could be enabled to pull it down in the next
release of MBA? I would like to see the complete header at once.

And for now I'm really going to sleep...

You can move the border between the header and body. I slid it down so it
would reveal the entire headers on most of my msgs. I still have to check
occasionally, but it's better than the default setting.

hi we recently bought a site license so that we can put your app on cd
and have users read their mail spools. ive setup the .ini file such
that MainDirectory=C:\Temp. everything BUT the cache is getting
written there and ominious pop error msgs occur which may or may not
frighten the user. is there a way to turn off caching or perhaps
write it to C:\Temp. thanks in advance,
michael

Hi all;

I'm using MailBag Assistant to scrub mailboxes of duplicate email,
and then move messages off to long term that I want to keep.

There is a tag at the start of each message now, starting with MBG,
then what appears to be the copywrite symbol, and a string of
numbers, followed by the folder name the mail is in.

In Eudora this leads to a blank trash message in the folder, with a
line of text with the MBG at the bottom of each message.

Is there a configuration item I'm missing? How do I keep the system
from doing this?

Thanks.

I've just a standard one person/user installation. But my cache is a sub folder
named cache this folder resides in the mbg .exe directory. content of my cache
is small near 450 KB

MainDirectory=

that's from my ini. evidently is no need for that option when its a default
install like mine.

In the preferences/options i saw a setting "keep messages in main memory"
switched off by default. (could this take the place of the HD cache given
sufficient amount of ram?)

I don't understand: are you running the exe/app from cd disk. or is the exe on
HD with user's emails on cd disk.

Just a user here sharing what I know of.

Hi,

I do not know what to do in order to replicate your situation. I've never
experienced what you've shared.

R you trying to prune your original Eudora files with Mailbag? If so, Mailbag
is not designed for that.

Once you have generated a .mbg which is the mailbag archive file, then mailbag
will remove dupes from this the native mailbag archive file format. These .mbg
are not designed to be viewed with Eudora.

Mailbag can be used to reply to an archived email. When do so, mailbag brings
up the message for reply using your default email client where you can edit then
send with your email client at this point.

Hello,

I am currently evaluating the software and I am trying to write a script that :

1. Opens all .eml files in a specific directory
2. Export Email As bsd mailbox to a specific file

To open I use the command "Open" but I can't seem to find any Export command...

Help is welcome :)

Hi Luca,

This is what should be a standard feature of MBA. But there isn't such one. In
the past some scripts were created, but none of them automates the process.
