Mr. Adair,

This might be helpful to those who have not used it yet.

Have been working with M/A for a few days now. As I moved from Nscp
v
1996 thru several versions to Communicator 4.76, I had found that in
the Programs folder for the mail Netscape folder, a separate Netscape
folder existed with a mail folder that had not transferred all of the
mail folders and earliet email folders containing inportant emails to
the newer versions. And had no way to even look at those older
boxes,
except with Lotus Magellan and its gather function.

I have now moved all of those "lost" email folders onto a portable
hard drive and also to a CD RW disk and completely out of the Program
folder on the C drive. With M/A, I am now able to index, read and/or
search for each missing message without using the Communicator
program at all. I have also moved a large number of unused but also
important email folders out of Communicator in the same way as above.

I will now be able to move most of my earlier Inbox emails out of Com
and still be able to read and search them. It has been an
aggravation
for the time taken for the compacting of the inbox when the Messenger
is closed out to go back to a windows program. And the space saved
on
my original hard drive is significant.

Thank you folks for a great program - and also the unexpected tech
support. Unexpected because my track record on obtaining any respose
to tech questions from too many of the programs I use and/or have
tried is extremely poor.

The only thing I can offer is to just try it out. I would think
you would need an index file though because that is what MailBag
looks for.

You can export your Outlook mail to the OE5 format though and
read it that way.

Hi,
I was just trying to append to an existing file and when it finished, I saw
the message that 0 files had been appended. Any idea why it did not work
this time?

Can I open one file, then bring in another file and append that way?

Hi Lou,

I'm not the resident expert but I have used MailBag for a little
while. Was the file you tried to append to left intact? The
only time I've seen the ZERO files appended message is if a copy
of the message(s) was already part of the archive. Are you sure
that didn't happen?

Yes, but duplicates will not be added. Perhaps that is what
happened with the first paragraph above?

There is no FAQ in MailBag. What do you mean by a restore
operation? If you are trying to convert a MailBag archive back
to the original mail program format, you cannot do that.

I am using Mailbag 2.0 for the first time.
I have maybe 10,000 emails in my Netscape mail
file. I accidentally saved a days' incoming
emails to my backup hard disk . . . so three
important messages are contained in the mail
file on the second (backup) disk, but not the
first (primary) hard disk. I loaded the netscape
mail file and transferred the three messages from
the main grid to the work grid, but I see no way
to merge them into the mail file on the other
hard disk. Is there a merge capability? Any
help would be appreciated.

By the way, I logged several bugs in
Mailbag. What is the best way to forward bug
reports to Eric regarding mailbag?

Thanks,

Hi Charles,

Maybe I can help. If you loaded the mail file from your backup
into MailBag you're good so far. Now select the 3 files you want
to archive. Do not transfer them to the Subset grid, instead,
click Edit | Invert Selection. That will select all the other
files and leave the 3 you want to save unmarked (unselected).

Transfer the marked files to the Subset grid. Right Click in the
file area of the Subset grid, a popup menu will have an option to
-Clear Subset grid. Select that and the only files left in
Mailbag will be 3 files in the Main grid.

Click on the tab for the Main grid and then you can load the
archive you want to add the 3 files to. The files will be merged
upon loading, then you only have to save the archive and the 3
new files will be incorporated into the archive.

Thanks, Harvey, but I encountered a problem
w/ your approach. When I transfer the files
to the work grid, all but the three I need do
indeed get transferred, but the entire group
remains in the main grid. All but the three
*should* disappear from the main grid when
transferred, shouldn't they? Am I doing
something wrong, or should I ask Eric if we've
found a bug? My Inbox is 58 Mbyte--might that
have anything to do with it?

When you use Save in MailBag to an existing archive it will merge
the messages, but not add the duplicates. I did not really
understand what your problem is, so I hope my reply is relevant. ;)

You can send then to fs-nextrelease@yahoogroups.com so that
hopefully we can test them to see if they are indeed bugs not
wasting Eric or my time. ;) I don't doubt you are having the
problems, but we can get more information on the list(s)
sometimes for Eric making his work easier and faster. You can
also send them to bugs@... if you do not want them going
to the list. Please copy me at Support@... if you do or
just send them to me at that address to check and send Eric a
report of confirmation or not. See signup below.

Hello Charles,

Bad information is worse than no information, isn't it? I did
mis-state the directions.

I'll try a rewrite.

Load the mail file from your backup into MailBag you're good so
far. Now select the 3 files you want to archive. Transfer them
to the Subset grid. While in the subset grid save the 3 files to
a temporary archive (temp.mbg). There is an icon in the toolbar,
3 stacked folders, when you place your mouse over it the tootle
says Close All. The same icon is on the drop down File menu.
Click this icon to clear all Mailbag grids.

Load the temp.mbg back into MailBag and then load the archive you
want to add them to into MailBag also. At this point they are
merged, save the archive and the job is done.

Much simpler the second time, sorry about the erroneous
directions.

Hello again Charles,

I hate to tell you this but I've been tinkering with Mailbag and
there is another, much easier way to accomplish what you wanted.

Load the backup file into MailBag, Select the 3 files you want to
save, transfer them to the Subset grid, Right click on the Tab of
the Subset grid, a choice on the drop down menu is Save As, click
it, you will be presented with a list of your mailbag archives,
doubleclick or select and open the archive you want to save the 3
files to.

The popup menu will give you the option to merge the files if you
Select Yes, Save the archive and you're all set.

Harvey:

I am afraid I did not state my case clearly.
I was not trying to merge "mailbox" files; I was
trying to merge Netscape mail files. In my naivete
I assumed Mailbag Assistant could do this. In the
past few hours I have seen a reference to the fact
that Mailbag Assistant will not restore a mail file
to its original status--in other words, mailbag
archives cannot be reversed, which is more or less
what I was trying to do.

That being said, I have to tell you that I
think your method worked. I saved the temp files
in my primary hard disk netscape mail directory,
and when I next ran Netscape, the temp file(s)
were visible. So I tried to open one. Netscape
warned me "This does not appear to be a Netscape
Mail File . . Try to Open Anyway?" When I opened
it, everything was there!

Not knowing how to deal with multi-megabyte
files of this sort, I tried both DOS EDITOR and
NoteTab Pro. I think DOS editor deletes the
binary stuff (attachments); NoteTab seems to contain
it all. In comparing the old and the new, I see
that Mailbag leaves some arrows and a bit of ID
text in its file, but otherwise it looks identical
to the Netscape original. Apparently Netscape can
overlook this bit of difference. Seems to work!
All I have to do is copy over the original with the
Mailbag merged file and I'm set.

I'll have to do it for SENT in addition to
INBOX. I'd have to do it for DRAFTS, TEMPLATES,
etc., too, but I know I didn't have any activity
in those files.

I'll have to do this over and over again for
all my email aliases I used that day.

By the way, the process looks as if it
fails with the error message, "Invalid Mailbox
Header" when you try to merge. But the data is
in the file anyway.

This is an important lesson: when swapping
new disks in and out of your system, be careful
which is Master and which is Slave.

In conclusion, it looks like Mailbag can be
used to merge Netscape mail files. It is tricky.
I'm still uneasy about overwriting my original
mail files with the newly merged one, for I have
numerous attachments and program updates with
those messages, and I'm scared of corrupting them.
I'm probably better off saving the few "lost"
messages in a special file, and NOT overwriting
the original mail file. This way I'm sure I have
not damaged my attachments.

One of these days I'm going to try to use
Mailbag Assistant for what it was intended for--
archiving and processing email. Speaking of
which, I have more than 2,500 NTB list posts that
are still UNREAD (I have been too busy to read
much of my email, and the list mail has hardly
been touched). I can use Mailbag to sort these
out by subject (NTB, HTML, MB, etc.) and archive
them separately for later review, can't I?

      Thanks for the help!

Hi Charles,

First, you could have made a copy of the Netscape mail file, 1
Netscape mail folder actually consists of 2 files. For
instance, a folder named - NoteTab - would consist of a file
named - NoteTab = without an extension, and a file named -
NoteTab.snm.

You can rename these eg. NoteTab1 and NoteTab1.snm. After
renaming the copies drag them into the Netscape Mail Folder.

When you start the email client a new Mail folder will appear
with the name - NoteTab1.

With this folder it's easy to drag and drop any messages you like
from folder to folder.

I know what you mean about being anxious when overwriting large
files. I merge my email to archive at no more than 3 day
intervals. My largest file, in which I archive everything I want
to save, is going on 24MB. I then divide things into individual
mailbags named after the mail folders that they originally came
from. This way if I lose the big file I can merge all the
smaller files and still not lose anything. If I lose a smaller
mailbag I can recreate it from the larger file. MailBag also has
a feature to extract attachments to a separate folder. Haven't
had any trouble saving large files yet.

I can send you an example of the MailBag Clip that I use for this
if you would like, it could be used as a template for your own
Clip.

Drag and drop! That'll work. It's so
simple, too! Why didn't I think of that?
(Because I hate Windows and never think in
terms of Windows solutions.) I'll do some
experimentation, to get comfortable with the
concept, but I'm sure I finally have it done
the other way. And thanks for the help. At
least I can now get started with Mailbag.
It's a really powerful utility, I can see
that.

You speak of a "clip" to organize you
emails. From this am I to assume that you
don't rely on Mailbag? I still don't fully
understand Mailbag's capabilities, but it
looks to me like it isn't usable as a backup
or archive of emails if they are ever to be
used in the email client again. In other
words, it's a one-way arrangement, and can't
restore backwards? (Although I've just shown
it can do so with Netscape. But Netscape
email files appear to be straight TEXT files,
which would facilitate that.)

I'd very much appreciate your clip.
I'll try it. I keep all incoming/outgoing
correspondence, including emails, letters,
voice, FAX, and graphics, etc., in a
heirarchical alphabetic filing system which
could (theoretically) be linked in Napster-
like arrangement with others around the world
over the internet. As a writer, I had
envisioned a Napster-like distributed
directory system which would allow us all
(researchers and writers) to share files
and research and resources. The technical
issues are trivial. However, the copyright
and security and control of distribution
aspects of the concept have proven to be
quite simply insurmountable. And look only
to get worse.

I'd like to try your clip for another
reason. I confess to never having used a
clip. I have always wanted to learn clip
programming, but haven't yet had the time.
Maybe this will get me started.

Thanks!

I am able to do it one e-mail message at a time: by opening up the
message in MA, clicking onto the Message Body tab, right click onto
the text, click Copy to Output, click Output View tab, and then click
File|Print (which is set up on my computer to print/convert the
message body to a PDF file).

I was hoping I could simplyfy this process by doing a batch process
using MA.

Thanks,

Carmen

Hi Carmen,

Your printer is set to Print to a file, if you choose, instead of
hard copy, correct?

I won't say, yes you can do that, but, if you can accomplish what
you need manually in MailBag then you can probably use MailBags
own Clip language and Clip Editor to accomplish the job en
masse. You need to start reading MailBag help to familiarize
yourself with the clip language.

Study the default clips that come with MailBag, that should help
with understanding capability and form of Clips. Just load them
into the clip editor and peruse.

Just set a goal of automating the conversion of 1 file and expand
from there. The clip language is pretty powerful, it should
handle the task.

If you happen to be a NoteTab user, or, even if you're not, this
is the address for the NoteTab Clips list. The language is very
similar and you can ask questions on that list also.

Yes, I do rely on MailBag for that, it has its own Clip
capability.
Dig into the MailBag help and I will add my big clip to this
mail.

I haven't needed to restore an archived massage to an email
client but, you can resend a message from MailBag. Open the
archive with the message, select the message, click the email
icon in the toolbar. Every thing but the destination address is
inserted into an outgoing message. If you want a copy of the
message in Netscape, close the message window and you are given
the opportunity to save the message in the Drafts folder. You
can put it where you like then. This procedure does add more
email quotes ">" but there is an option setting to change the
character or delete these to prevent adding them in MailBag.

One of my most used clips in Mailbag.
This clip can be edited for your directory structure and the
label names (the single words beginning with a colon) for the
most part, represent my Netscape folder names and the names of
the MailBag archives, easier to keep track of for me. These
folders are the only ones I backup for my use.

This clip be edited before or after pasting into MailBags Clip
Editor. Watch for the long lines that will probably get wrapped
during email transmission. With this clip the only long lines to
worry about begin with - Open - and end with - .snm. The first
long line is the only exception, it has to be double quoted
because of the plus sign at the beginning of the path.

Hello, Harvey and All:

>Your printer is set to Print to a file, if you choose, instead of
hard copy, correct?<

Yes. I have it set up to "Print" to Acrobat Distiller (a function of
the Adobe Acrobat software) -- converting files to PDF.

>You need to start reading MailBag help to familiarize
yourself with the clip language.

Study the default clips that come with MailBag, that should help
with understanding capability and form of Clips. Just load them
into the clip editor and peruse.<

I spent several hours today do that, but I am at a spot where I just
don't know how to start.

After looking through the different MA scripts, templates and
wizards, I believe I need to make a template that will convert my
batch of Eudora e-mail files to PDF. Then I can choose that template
in the Export Messages option (on page 4) when I run the Mailbox
Wizard. I believe my PDF script would be similar to the Export as Web
Pages script, but I really don't know how to start.

I believe this is what I need:

   ApplyFilter
   ShowPage MainGrid
   Open "+C:\Eudora\*.toc"
   Match Has {All:W} "aafla.org"
   IfUnselected End
   Transfer
   ShowPage SubsetGrid
   ClearOutput
   MergeData "HtmlMessage"
   IfError End
   IfEmpty Next ELSE End
   OpenOutput "HtmlMessage"

Except the MergeData "HtmlMessage" and OpenOutput "HtmlMessage"
should be MergeData "PdfMessage" and OpenOutput "PdfMessage" (for
example). I have read and reread the Merge-Data Templates section in
Help, but I still can't figure out how to get started.

I have to tell you that I have no experience in writing script -- I
have taken a beginners class in HTML, if that makes a difference. :-)

I really think I can make MA work for me, I just need a little hand
holding.

I would appreciate any assistance in this matter

Thank you,

Carmen

I'm using the trial version of Mailbag Assistant and it seems like a
program I could really use.

I have two identities in Outlook Express.

When I try to perform a search using the Wizard the program locks up
at some point. Typically it is up to a folder called Jun00 which is
no larger or more unusual than my dozens of other folders or sub
folders.

Thinking that the folder was somehow corrupt I created a new folder
with a different name and moved all my messages there. This time
the "search" got past this new folder and got hung up in a different
folder. I then gave the new folder its old name Jun00 and, sure
enough, the search once again locks up at Jun00.

So what's going on? It doesn't seem to be a corrupt mail message
since placing all the old messages in the new folder seemed to be
OK...for a time.

Hi Marty,

It appears MBA does not like "Jun00". Perhaps you can rename the
mailboxes for now. Eric will hopefully be working on a
maintenance release in a moth or two and can look into it then.
Perhaps some others may have some suggestions.

Jody and Marty,

The folder names appears to refer to the date (June 2000), you
might change the format slightly to Jun-00 and see if that helps.

I don't think the problem is with the folder per se, but rather one of the
mailbox files that it contains. Instead of opening them all in one go, you
might try to open one mailbox file at a time. Doing so will help you
identify the file that is causing the problem. Use the File/Open Mailbox
menu command to pick your files one at a time.

Hope this helps.

You were right. The problem was with individual messages. I rooted
out over a dozen messages that were locking up the software. It was a
long, painstaking detective process but hopefully it won't have to be
done again and if the program continues to work smoothly I'll
register it in a few days.

Oddly the problem messages had absolutely nothing in common. A couple
were routine messages from eBay that I get by the hundreds...only one
would lock up the software!

Hi Mark,

That sure is odd it was the problem from the symptoms you gave.
I suppose Eric figured the folder name would not cause it so it
had to be corrupt mailboxes. ;) Yes, it does take awhile to
find them like that, but worth it after you are done.
