taking space in stall.
  Pl. give ur feedback on what all we could do.

We would like to apply for a stall in OpenSource stall at LB/02. This
will be the Localisation section in the stall ( whats the name of the
stall ?). Below is short description of what we expect to do.

Who are 'we' ?
  Members of various Localisation groups viz will try to have at least
1 member from each team.

   IndLinux (Hindi,Marathi) - http://www.indlinux.org
   Kannada  - http://kannada.sourceforge.net/
( Following teams invited - but participation not yet confirmed )
   Bengali - http://www.banglalinux.org/
   Tamil   - http://www.tamillinux.org/
   Malayalam - http://malayalamlinux.sourceforge.net
   LLI     - http://lli.linux-bangalore.org

Our goal
  Showcase whats available wrt Indian language support on Linux
including distros like Redhat 8.0, Mandrake 9.0 etc.
  Create awareness about Localisation into Indian languages.

Requirements
  Hardware : 1-2 PCs - min config. Celeron 300 or above, 128MB ram,
CDROM, LAN card
  Software : Redhat 7.3/8.0, Mandrake 9.0, Gnome 2, KDE 3.x, XFree86
4.2

( if possible ) access to CDRS data to collect demographics of those
visiting localisation stall & talks and email localisation newsletter

What we will do
  Have 10-15 min sessions explaining to delegates what is localisation,
what they can do & how to join in.
  Possibly distribute 1 pager containing breif on localisation on one
side & links to team pages on other side.

Demos: following demos could be shown
  - Gnome 2 desktop in Hindi
  - Tamil KDE desktop
  - Malayalam support - fonts, renderers
  - Bangla support - fonts
  - Kannada translations
  - Chatting in indian languages using Gaim 2 (Jabber as backend)
  - E-mail in indian languages using Balsa 2, K-Mail
  - Indian languages on web using Unicode - using Mozilla/Konqueror
  - Using unicode editor  Yudit.
  - Using Gtranslator for translations
  - IndLinux Hindi installer (based on Redhat 8.0)
  -  .... Awaiting more ideas from others

Thats all for now - maybe will add more to this once I get feedback
from other teams.

Great news for Windows users. It may not have any effect on Linux but
will clearly bring about some stability on the font. Quoting below

Bill Gates agrees to give special focus to Kerala
NEW DELHI: Microsoft Corporation Chairman Bill Gates has agreed to
treat Kerala as a special focus state for his area of work, besides
extending Windows XP local language support to Malayalam.

Gates has also agreed to include Kerala in his itinerary during his
next visit, Industries and IT Minister P K Kunhalikutty said after
holding discussions with Gates today.

Kunhalikutty said he had highlighted the strong points of Kerala like
cent per cent literacy, high level of health care and life

Government has given priority to e-governance.

The decision to extend Microsoft's Windows XP local language support
to Malayalam would considerably increase the usage of computer and

Windows XP local language support with the help of local partners
thereby increasing the number of Indian languages supported by it to
11.The Indian languages already covered are Hindi, Sanskrit, Konkani,
Marathi, Tamil, Gurmukhi, Telugu, Kannada and Gujarati.

Kunhalikutty was accompanied by a high level delegation of the IT
Department including its Secretary Aruna Sunder Raj.

Asked why Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony did not meet Gates like
other Chief Ministers, Mr Kunhali Kutty said his mission had the full
support of Antony.

A suggestion:

Get some malayalam text from newspaper websites (Manorama etc).
Convert the text to unicode using Varamozhi (http://varamozhi.sf.net)

You can then use it to test your font. Please let me know after your work
is completed. I would very much like to use Omega for typesetting
Malayalam.

If you require this condition only, the best thing you can do is
make a modified version of GPL as Affero GPL did
(http://www.affero.org/oagpl.html). You may get approval from
FSF (contact RMS rms@...)

See there are lots of problems with LaTeX Project Public License
Thats why FSF says "Please do not use this license for any other project."
(I started studying this license)

I think you didn't made any official announcement yet,
so please study in detail about licenses then decide which one to use.

See LPPL says :
"If for any part of your program you want or need to use *distribution*
conditions that differ from those in this license, then do not refer to this
license anywhere in your program but instead distribute your program under a

After studying the licensing terms, I will write in details.
But I couldn't understant many of the sentenses.

Glyphs shapes are a work of Art, The Glyph shapes defines the personality
of a font and this is some thing that the designers are passionate about.
So if you change the glyph shape you have to change the name of the font.
On the other hand no such restrictions apply for the tables in the font
including TT and OT tables.

No one is yet registered as the co-ordinator of Malayalam
KDE translations, If you can manage translation works of KDE,
just post a mail to KDE i18n mailing list. You can give
smc-devel@... as translattor list, I can set up a web page also.

I think such a thing is necessary, because the translation work is
really huge, one or two peoples cannot handle this completly.
Mainly the difficulty will arise for documentio translations.
(Karunakar suggested this once)

So we can disuss with local groups like
FSUG-Kochi,FSUG-Kozhikode,ilug-tvm etc.

Its need not be part of their group activity, we can find individuals
interested in this work.

Ok now I will give a brief itro about how to start translations.
For keep up a uniformity in translations, first we have to translate
technical and GNU terms, so we can start with GNOME glossay.
its about 900+ words. (I think KDE dictionary is also good)

see all our translations should be utf-8 encoding (unicode).
so now you can use Yudit editor for this, (www.yudit.org)
its installation is very easy, if any difficulty please mail me.
You can use MalOtf.ttf font available at savannah downloads
section.

I have translated few GNOME glossay terms, its available
at CVS (now use anonymous, create a savannah ID,
so that I can add you as a developer)
then we can  submit this at gnome CVS,
if you have time please visit #gnome-india channel at
irc.gnome.org, Naba kumar will help you for this,
I will be online there, we can discuss in more details there.
I will also add 'praveenmmohanan' to my friend's list in yahoo.

        Anyone used Googles Manglish interface
(http://www.google.com/intl/ml/). Their translations are excellent.
I searched
a lot to find who is doing this, but I faild. Anyway this translations
will be very usefull for our translation works. I have put a copy of the
complete translations at  :

I do not quite see the usefulness of this. (with apologies to GK).
For testing purposes, would'nt it be beter to use the 'glyphs to be
supported' table(?) at page 38 of the TDIL april 2002 issue?

On my win 98 machine, with keli/malayalam/malotf fonts on mozilla,
please see the screen shot.

Has anybody ported pango to win?  I have cygwin, and am willing to
experiment with a compile, it can be plugged in into Mozilla / openoffice.

         Cyberscape multimedia limited has released Indic language TrueType
Fonts (TTF) under GNU General Public License on 2nd October. The
fonts can be downloaded from http://www.akruti.com/freedom/ (This
webpage is now under construction)

I have put a copy of those fonts at :

If anyone convert these to OpenType fonts (OTF) that will very nice.

If that recomendation is not going to accept by Unicode consortium,
it will make more problems. If the new recommendations comes to effect,
converting exististing documents will be very easy, I think simple shell
scripts will do that.

Did you noticed a previous news letter of TDIL, they suggested to include
symbols of ya,ra,Ra,la and va But its rejected by Unicode consortium.

I think some Malayalam Bhagavath gheeta,Bible etc. still use the old
numerals. Let it be there for backward compatiblity :)

of the chillus into unicode, based on (but with slight modifications)
Kerala Govt's recommendations on the Unicode standards, have not come
into effect yet.  But, I think that all development efforts can take
into consideration the Central Govt's recommendations in TDIL's

proposals for _dropping_ characters from the Code.  This is for
purpose of backward compatiblity. Unfortunately, the Kerala Govt's
committee recommended dropping certain characters.  The

Kerala govt. recommended that malayalam numerals need not be included
in the Unicode script.

So, future developments should use the usual indo arabic numerals as

Well, I think now its time to write a status of Malayalam
GNU/Linux project and related technologies. This group is
formed just few months before, before that there were lots
of individual and some group efforts for making Malayalam
computing possible (yes! Swathantra Malayalam Computing).

Now we are going to use unicode character set and utf-8
encoding as basis for our works, its the way to go!.
We will be using OpenType  fonts (OTF).
Ofcourse there is a limitation in unicode, it doesn't have
code position for Malayalam 'chillu' chararacters,
so we are using a three code maping for chillus :
<consonant> + <chandrakkala> + <ZWJ>
Here ZWJ is the Zero Width Joiner, a special character for
solving this king of problems and its value is U+200D.
But in our ormal inputting this won't effect, because we are going to
use the new standared Inscript layout proposed by govt. of Kerala,
it has single keys for chillus, for sujita and others can prefer
transliteration based inputs, but those who comfortable with Malayalam
can choose Inscript keyboard.

Now GNOME 2.x has good support for all indic languages, it supports
OpenType fonts.
KDE also will be having Indic layout support very soon.
Now its time to start translation works, and ofourse documentations.

Now total 51 members are joined in this group.
We have two moderators :
1. Rajkumar S
2. N.V Shaji

Also we have GPLed OpenType font, it has some problems, I will fix it
next week.


Now, how you can participate :

Translation works will be a good area for non-programmers, I will
provide some
guidelines later.

Those who interested in fonts, some TTF fonts are goin to release
under GPL very soon,
so you can convert it into OTF fonts.

Here are some options for programmers, we need a transliteration based
input method
using GTK+ Input Method, Arun M has done some works, its available at :

try to modify it to suite our needsi.

(Those who interested in XFree86, it can be done uning XIM, but too
complicated,
some simple codes are available here , you can start  working from
here (its for simple chinese):

See now we are using Inscript keyboard layout, there is another popular
keyboard layout used by typists (Modular scheme), it can be
implimented by using these input methods,
but we have to make so many assumptions as we are following unicode
stardared,

Then one of the important work, which will be usefull for huge data
entry peoples :)
Malayalam Input checker, we have to check whether the user is
inputting in correct unicode seqence,
I can elaborate on this in seperate mail.

How about using terms like module, compiler, kernel, etc. as such? "progam"
cannot be translated anyway.

All these terms appear in para 3 of the GPL.

Thanks for the detailed information about Malayalam. As you can probably
tell, I have very little information about this script, and am happy to get
more detailed information.

At the moment, I'm quite busy with another project and won't have very much
time to work on Indic script issues for at least another month, possible
two. At that time I intend to add the code to do the post 'GSUB' MATRA_PRE
fixups needed for Malayalam and Tamil and may also have some time to work
on the issues that you've mentioned. At this time, I may contact you for
more information.

In the meantime, the Pango code is OpenSource, so you might consider
proposing a patch yourself. The Pango mailing list is
gtk-i18n-list@.... I will forward your message to this list for
consideration.

                 First of all thanks for adding Malayalam support
in pango module. Here I wish to piont out some mistakes in the
code.

The spliting for U+0D0C (Malayalam Vovel sign AU) is not
required.
I know the current unicode document clearly written like :

* pieces on both sides of the consonant.
= U+0D46 (consonat) U+0D57

But now we are not using taht shape.

Ministry of IT (Govt. of india), a member of Unicode consortium
has prosed for a change in Malayalam. They suggested to change
the shape of U+0D4C (no backward compatibility problem) as
U+0D57

I changed the shape of U+0D4C

So if you are removing the splitting of that character, no
compatibiity problem will arise. Otherwise unicode support for
Malayalam will be useless.

Don't reorder it like that, because the 'VATTU' formation is
different for different consonats. Most of that will be
(consonat) + U+0D31 (Dravida 'Madyamam')  (Sometime in future,
this only will be existing as our language eveloves)
And some consonats will be joining only with U+0D30 (A 'Madyamam
' derived from Sanscrit)
All Malayalam 'mrithus' are like this
eg:- U+0D17,U+0D1C,U+0D26 etc.

So this instruction can be given in GSUB tables using 'pres'
feature. (ofcource this will be a big table)

I am thinking about writing an input checker also for avoing
most of the errors.

Now I have given the instructions for five 'chillus' like :
(consonant) + (virama) + (ZWJ) in the font. And I have submitted
XKB and Compose file to Xfree86 for easy inputting of chillus as
per the keyboard layout prosed by kerala govt.

Malayalam LC_COLLATE is also based on this.

If our proposal is going to be accepted by Unicode consortium,
all these problems will be solved. But we can't wait till that,
we want to solve these problems with backward and forward
compatibility.
