RE: [mammals-aus] Proserpine

Mark,

I asked the same question a couple of years ago.

Following is the answer posted to mammals aus. We did get to see Proserpine
Rock Wallabies at Mt Lucas after a couple of visits - there were other
wallabies there too, so accurate identification is necessary.

Regards,

John.

Hi John,

Yes, you would have a chance to see Proserpine Rock Wallabies at Airlie
Beach. I understand that if you take a late night drive along the roads
through the residential areas on Mt Lucas, the wallabies are sometimes seen
grazing on the verge. I don't know of any reliable sites within the
rainforest - I saw them in 2000 in someone's garden on Mt Lucas - the
wallabies regularly visited for food in the late afternoon. You might be
able to track those people down if you ask a local or at the NPWS office.
They are great animals. THey are also on Gloucester Island - I don't know
how easy access is.

THere are plenty of other mammals around there. Flying foxes and Ghost Bats
for starters. And not far away, Eungella is famous for its platypuses, while
Spectacled Hare Wallabies are through some of the drier country.

Good luck

Jon

Hi,

I am visiting Airlie Beach for a few days soon and was wondering if anyone
had some information on seeing mammals in the area - possible species to
look for and good places to look.

I am relative beginner to mammal watching and will be limited to
day-watching or a little spotlight in the evenings.

Is seeing a Proserpine Rock wallaby a realistic possibility?

Thanks in anticipation,

John Goldie,

Canberra

Hi all,

I am hoping that someone might be able to help me out with some helpful
information about where to look for Proserpine Rock Wallabies. Has anyone
on this list seen this beast and if so can you divulge where I might look?

Many thanks,

Mark Sanders
