G'day all,
I am going to New Caledonia in late Sept, mostly birding, but would like
to possibly try for other wildlife while there. I was wondering if
anyone had been there and knew of any bat roosts/colonies and how common
the introduced Rusa Deer are. Also if anyone has any sites for the
various reptile species it would be greatly appreciated.
On another note, I had great views at home (Laceys Creek SEQld) of a
Water Rat on Sunday afternoon. It was early afternoon and I heard
something moving through the Lantana infested bank opposite to where I
was standing. On following the noise I noticed a white tipped tail at
about 70 degrees as it briefly appeared in a bit of an opening. I
thought this view of the tail was all I was going to see then the Rat
entered the water and casually swam upstream past me. It unsuccessfully
chased some unseen prey before stopping to have a short preen then
continued upstream. Its not a species I see often and rarely this well
so it really made my weekend.
Cheers and Thanks in advance for any replies
Gavin
