I datalogged my roof-top GPS for 24 hours yesterday and produced a
graph of error-verses-HDOP-verses-time.
Got some interesting results:
http://web.argo.net.au/stephen/contour_map/LOG_CHART.htm
It is better at 3am-4am when the ionophere settles down.(IF this is
typical)The prime irritant seems to be THE RIGHT TIME, and doesn't
seem to have much to do with HDOP or sats.
I'll do a few more of these massive datalogs to check it.
Any thoughts?

Keith,
Thanks for posting this link. I'm not sure I'm ready for vector
mapping software, but I can use the links that mapmaker.com provides
for GPS utilities, base maps and data.
Feel free to add this link to the Bookmarks.

Subject: [ GPS Maps ] Vector maps
Hi everyone.
New member also from South Africa (Hi Rob)
I've been an Oziexplorer user for the past 2-3 years but I've tried
just about everything else as well.
Due to lack of electronic maps available I have scanned anything I
could put my hands on, initially with a small A4 scanner, then with
an A3 scanner around which I have built a "scanning table".
Initially I started scanning at 200 dpi, then I realized that saving
a couple of minutes in scanning time was not worted. So I converted
my collection, which covers Southern Africa (up and including
Zambia), to 300dpi. ... lots of Gigs!!! (but then someone answered
my prayers and released cheap large capacity hard drives!).
At the same time the gps (a Garmin GPS12 first and a GPS12map later)
became for me what a camera is for a Japanese turist. So I have also
put together a sizeable collection of tracks.
Numerous times I have found that maps published in our region are
based on outdated or incorrect data. What to do? Not much, really
because I'm not supposed to be scanning in the first place!
I am searching for a simple map drawing utility which I can use to
generate my own maps by importing tracks, waypoints etc possibly from
Oziexplorer. This utility should also be able to import digital
topographic data in ASCii.fea(Regis format) or DXF formats (the
local government format).
Any suggestion? I have been suggested to use professional programs
which cost as much as a motorcar: surely there must be something
available for the amatour!
Also: does anyone know if there is a way to generate maps which can
be uploaded into a Garmin (replacing the rubbish by Garmin, usefull
only to loose your way)?

It would if I had a utility to import the e00 format in delimuted text. The
problem is that the e00 format appears to have multiple record formats per
file, where one section appears to indicate sections of line, another describes
it, another links it to points, and so on.
Secondly, to do this by hand would be tiresome in the extreme - I'm using data
files of up to 30 000 data points, so a manual read-and-delete isn't an option.
Finally, the e00 format isn't well documented anywhere and ESRI don't seem too
keen (from what I've heard) on actually xplaining their format - not that I'd
understand it anyway, but I might.
Thanks
Rob

Rob,
Those are good questions. I'm aware of the e00 format, but I've
never looked at them in any detail. One common stragedy to extract
information from a file is to read the file as delimited text and
sort out the information you want.
Does this help?

Hi everyone
I suppose that is would be appropriate for me to introduce myself before
barging in & demanding help ;-)
I'm a South African, mountaineer, programmer, medic, mountain rescuer, diver &
general idle layabout who dabbles in making his own maps from (so far) publicly
accessible data using navigation software to compile the maps (as opposed to
GIS).
I've located agreat deal of publicly accessible data on the web. Most seems to
be in ArcInfo exchange format (e00).
I'm looking for a utility which will allow me to extract only one type of data
from an arcinfo e00 file. For example, most files of (eg) roads will contain
national roads, regional roads, secondary roads, dirt roads and roads under
construction. I'd like to be able to extract a second e00 file from this with
perhaps only the national roads or only dirt roads.
Is anyone aware of such a utility (DOS or MS-Windows based)?
TIA

Doug,
I use OziExplorer which can read .png but you need calibration ozi toolkit (in
the package).
I put it in this format to have the best rate size/quality (jpg introduce
information lost after several compresses actions)
I would like to have an exchange place for nautical chart homemade. As you know,
in many countries you must have original paper chart in board (for securities
aspects too), as royalties are already paied, NOAA, SHOM, NDI, ... chart maker
business is protected.

Pascal

At Travel by GPS, I try to provide patrons with some idea of the
accuracy of the GPS data I provide. Without any guidance, I simply
classified the data as Class A (acquired manually with GPS) or Class
B (pulled from a digital map) with a couple of subdivisions for each.
See http://www.travelbygps.com/faq.htm#Data Classification
Is there already a standard set for declairing the accuracy of GPS
data?
Is stating the EPE for each datapoint necessary?
How do you handle this issue?

the Bookmarks area. Have a look, and by all means add you own.
Today is the last day to have input on the group settings. Sometime
tonight, or early tomorrow, I will change the current settings.
Unless I hear otherwise the settings will open up most areas to non-

I plan to keep the files section closed to non-members. I would like
this area to be reserved for premium content. I propose that each
member create a folder in the files section to place a few examples
of their work. I have already put some of my stuff there (I
apologize if you received several automated messages of my file
postings - I thought I had the notification feature suppressed).

I think I disagree with you on email attachments. I'm a little
concerned about bandwidth, viruses, etc. I'd rather have attachments
uploaded to the files or photos section. Then others can download it
if they want.
