This is just a reminder about the PA Mars Society’s upcoming booth at the Carnegie Science Center’s National Engineers Week event.  It will be attended by thousands of children and their families, so we can use all of the help we can get!  There is a volunteer’s orientation meeting tomorrow (Wednesday the 11th).  It is not mandatory, but recommended.  Details are below:

PA Mars Society Members -

Friday, February 20, and Saturday, February 21, the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh will be holding an exciting event as part of National Engineers Week.  The event is geared towards younger kids, and several thousand people are expected to come out for the excitement!  The PA Mars Society will be one of 65 engineering organizations holding a hands-on booth at this event.  We need volunteers to help staff our exhibit!  Details are below:

When:

For all volunteers, there is a Volunteer Orientation Meeting at CSC on Wednesday, February 11 from 5pm-6:30pm.

We will set up our booth from 7am-9am on Friday the 20th.

The event runs from 9am – 5pm on Friday the 20th, and from 10am – 5pm on Saturday the 21st.

For shift lengths, 3-4 hours is a good range.

The Exhibit:

The PSU Mars Society is taking care of the exhibit, although volunteers are always welcome!  We will have a small static display, including info about the Mars Society, handouts, brochures, and posters and images from the current missions.

The feature of our exhibit will be a small Mars Yard; a small mock Mars terrain over which kids will be able to drive remote control rovers.  To give them an engineering challenge, they will only be able to watch a monitor showing the view of an on-board camera.  The camera will have a few second delay in it, so the kids will have to think like JPL engineers trying to control the rovers.

This should prove to be a very exciting event.  Again, we need volunteers to help out on either day, although if you can help out on both, even better!  Please email me if you can help out.  Also, email me with any questions.
