Hi Mars-Pennsylvania Group & PA Mars Society
Members:
I recently received this message (below) from a M.S.
member from New York. Whatever happens with the
election in November, I know that we are all hoping to
reach our goal of establishing a program of human
exploration on the surface Mars within the next decade
or two. To do this, it is critical to keep the issue
bipartisan (as it has been historically). One of the
ways we can do this is to assure that the Democrats
have a similar goal of reaching Mars as has been
outlined by President Bush. No matter where you stand
politically, you personally have the opportunity to
help get MoveOn.org to promote Humans to Mars as a
“Great Goal” for our nation. Please read on and click
on link below! MoveOn.org has a track record, and if
they can assist in making Mars a priority for Senator
Kerry, we will be closer to Mars regardless of the
election's outcome. The next two months are critical
on many fronts. More later. Thanks!
Sincerely,

John Glenn's recent call for a direct to Mars program,

Lost in Space: What is the future for NASA?
Tuesday, May 11
7:30 - 9:00 PM
National Constitution Center (525 Arch Street, Independence Mall)
As photos from Spirit and Opportunity were first beamed to earth, the President
announced his intention to put a man on Mars. Challenging the President's
priorities, scientists speak about protecting the planet from wayward asteroids
and budget hawks argue for more resources to address government red ink than for
trips to the red planet. For more than a generation, NASA, along with the
nation, has celebrated mission successes and mourned its losses. Our criticism
is matched by our curiosity, which leaves one to wonder what the future hold for
the space program.

To All:
We must not slow down our efforts to guarantee that
humans to Mars remains on the agenda. We need to rally
our forces to let Congress, and the likely Democratic
nominee, know that there is broad support for the
goals of the new space exploration initiative. We
should accomplish this in the following ways.
1. The Aldridge Commission has provided a public venue
for the public to provide their opinions. We need to
fully utilize this site.
http://www.moontomars.org/notices/contact.asp We need
to let them know that humans to Mars should occur no
later than 2020. We should recommend that the hardware
should be designed for a mission to Mars, and that a
subset of that hardware should used and tested on the
Moon.
2. We need to continue our efforts contacting
Congress. Tell them we support the President's 2005
budget request. If this request fails, then we will
not get an opportunity like this for some time.
Questions concerning this effort should be referred to
our Congressional Outreach Coordinator, Scott DiPietro
(sdipietr@...).
Recent Statement by Robert Zubrin: "The Mars
Exploration budget would be funded at $690.9 million,
an increase of $95.8 million over the current fiscal
year. The vast majority of the funds ($515.6 million)
would be used to develop technology that "supports new
space exploration vision."
"Such technology development programs and flight test
missions are valuable steps that could help open the
way for initiating a human Mars exploration program.
The Mars Society therefore strongly endorses these and
related budget requests that are part of the plan for
the new space exploration initiative, and urges
congress to pass the requested funding for these items
for FY 05."
3. We need to make sure that the likely Democratic
Presidential nominee, Senator John Kerry, knows that
there is broad support for humans to Mars and if he is
elected, he should support not merely continuing, but
substantially improving where the previous
administration left off.

Hello Mars-Pennsylvania Group & PA Mars Society
Members:
I've emailed our PA member list a number of times, but
realized the mars-penn group list contains a larger
group of people and it's easier to use for bulk
emailing. To make sure everyone is getting messages,
I've gone through both mailing lists to make sure
people do not receive duplicate emails (from me). For
everyone on the mars-penn group who is not actually a
Mars Society member, I encourage you to join and
participate.
And on to the referenced subject:
The Political task Force would like to begin tracking
feedback from our congressional representatives on the
Bush plan for human space exploration. What we are
asking is that you check local sources and gather
quotes, statements, etc. that your state's
congresspeople have made. This will give us credible
sources of information to use to help members prepare
for visits. It will also give the PTF a list of where
these people in congress stand (for, against, neutral
or no position stated). We will compile the
information and post it on the website by state.
Please send any information you gather to Matt Lowry
at lowryclan@... or Richard Sylvan at
rlsylvan@.... Please document when and where the
information came from. Here is some of the info that
would be needed:
Name of Congressperson
State (use standard state abbreviations)
Date & Source of Statement
Transcript of Actual Statement
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
ask. Thanks!

PA Mars Society Members -
Friday, February 20, and Saturday, February 21, the CarnegieScienceCenter in Pittsburgh will be
holding an exciting event as part of National Engineers Week. The event is geared towards younger
kids, and several thousand people are expected to come out for the excitement! The PA Mars Society will be one of 65
engineering organizations holding a hands-on booth at this event. We need volunteers to help staff our
exhibit!Details are below:
When:
For all volunteers, there is a Volunteer Orientation Meeting
at CSC on Wednesday, February 11 from 5pm-6:30pm.
We will set up our booth from 7am-9am on Friday the 20th.
The event runs from 9am – 5pm on Friday the 20th, and
from 10am – 5pm on Saturday
the 21st.
For shift lengths, 3-4 hours is a good range.
The Exhibit:
The PSU Mars Society is taking care of the exhibit, although
volunteers are always welcome!We
will have a small static display, including info about the Mars Society,
handouts, brochures, and posters and images from the current missions.
The feature of our exhibit will be a small Mars Yard; a
small mock Mars terrain over which kids will be able to drive remote control
rovers.To give them an engineering
challenge, they will only be able to watch a monitor showing the view of an
on-board camera.The camera will
have a few second delay in it, so the kids will have to think like JPL
engineers trying to control the rovers.
This should prove to be a very exciting event.Again, we need volunteers to help out on
either day, although if you can help out on both, even better! Please email me if you can help
out.Also, email me with any
questions.

President Bush through "officials, speaking on condition of anonymity" has
floated a trial balloon about sending humans to Mars after a return to the Moon
and the construction of a lunar base.
With the air literally going out of the ISS program and color pictures coming
back from the surface of Mars this is a tipping point moment.
I was just at the Habitation 2004 conference. Both the concierge at my hotel
and the bell hop at the conference hotel upon hearing that I was attending a
conference on living in space engaged me in surprisingly well informed
discussions on what the Mars rover would do and what it may help us learn about
Mars. This is on people's minds.
I personally have no strong objections to Bush's floated plan, my only real
objection is that so far there are some goals being mentioned, but no
Kennedyesque hard deadlines for achieving them.
Don't let Bush's trial balloon deflate!
It is important that right now people who support sending humans to Mars phone,
fax, email, or snail mail the White House to express support. President Bush
may be reached at president@..., 202-456-1111, or by writing
President George W. Bush, The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW Washington,
DC 20500. Bush has floated trial balloons before, such as Retirement Savings
Accounts as part of Social Security reform, only to let them disappear until the
time seems more appropriate.
The Democratic front runner, Howard Dean, is running on a platform of all things
not Bush. His inclination will be to object to this proposal, but he has made
statements in support of humans to Mars:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A58372\
-2003Nov3¬Found=true
If you are a scientist you can register your opinion at Scientists for Dean:
http://scientistsfordean.org/taxonomy/view/or/24
Note that the registration page for this site is currently running a poll:
"Should Dr. Dean emphasize his position in support of aggressive human Mars
exploration" at this page:
http://scientistsfordean.org/?q=user/register
As of this morning only 40 votes had been cast running 63% in favor.
Also on the Democratic side, Wesley Clark, has asked for input on America's
space future and you can give your two cents at: http://space.forclark.com/
I believe our goal has to be to get all the candidates supporting the idea of
humans to Mars and only arguing about the details. A vigorous debate is needed
to raise awareness of the issue to the point where public opinion tips (we hope)
towards a consensus that this is a good and necessary goal.
The two major candidates have publicly endorsed the idea of Humans to Mars. The
press spotlight is on them. We have to find ways to get them to publicly make
the case for why this is a good idea. Write your newspaper's editors, contact
the networks, e.g., http://www.cnn.com/feedback/ and ask them to ask the
candidates about this issue. The press is our proxy - get them to get the
candidates and the talking heads talking about Mars.
Surely, there must be many in the press who are tired of covering Brittany and
Paris, Neverland Ranch, and the sensational murder du jour and want an excuse to
cover a serious subject other than Iraq. Make them feel the demand.
Tip it.
Regards,
Gary Fisher

EST last night, January 3rd, NASA’s
first of two Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit, landed successfully on Mars. The space craft landed in its target, Gusev Crater, which is believed to have been a lake in the

craft inflated airbags that encompass it, allowing it to bounce safely along
the surface until it came to a stop.

Kevin Sloan, President of the PSU Mars Society, will be
discussing the future of space exploration from several perspectives. This presentation will cover how a
post-Columbia NASA is responding to criticism that it has no legitimate
goals.With this apparent downfall
of the U.S. space
program, other space agencies from around the world are moving into the
spotlight.Recently, China became the
third country capable of independent human space launch. What does this mean for the future of
space exploration?Also, find out
how private groups such as the Mars Society are helping to influence the
future.
Reduced Rates for Membership in International Mars

At each lecture you can register for membership in the
International Mars Society.Although this is not required for membership in the PSU Chapter, I
highly encourage it.If you
register at the event, you can receive a special discounted membership rate of
$12.50 for students and $25 for non-students (as compared to $25 and $50
normally).You can pay with cash,
check or credit card.I would like
for everyone involved in the PSU Chapter to register; membership dues are very
helpful for the international organization.I would also bet that a strong
membership drive would help our chances of getting the crew rotation at the
Mars Desert Research Station in March.

Trump (jonno@...)
or visit http://www.psums.org.
I have an opinion piece appearing on www.spacedaily.com at
http://www.spacedaily.com/news/oped-03zzi.html
To sum up the idea: Space habitats are the ultimate off the grid homes. Our
dependence upon centralized systems for such things as power, water, fuel, and
waste treatment leaves us vulnerable to a number of threats man-made or natural.
Therefore, space habitation is valuable as a method to develop these
technologies that can provide for greater security.
I would be curious what the members of this group think.
I have John McKnight to thank for helping me turn a very long piece of writing
into something far more succinct - though you may not think so!
I told Simon at spacedaily that I live near Philadelphia, but for some reason he
locates me in LA.

Hi everyone!
This is primarily for people in the Philadelphia area, but anyone else in the PA
chapters is welcome to participate. In particular I would request large copies
of the graphics done by the Penn State Chapter.
I received the attached letters from Alex Magoun, Ph.D. the Executive Director
of the David Sarnoff Library in Princeton, NJ. To summarize the letters - the
library, in association with the Institute for Arts and Humanities Education and
the New Jersey Antique Radio Club will present a theatrical recreation of the
radio broadcast, "War of The Worlds" on Saturday, November 1 at 7pm. This is
the 65th anniversary of the original Orson Wells broadcast.
The library is dedicated to science education. Check out their website at
www.davidsarnoff.org
The evening starts at 6pm with a Martian costume contest, then the broadcast,
then a reception.
They will waive the admission fee for anyone who comes and helps with the Mars
Society display which they have requested include our robots.
Alex has said we can set up at the back of the auditorium and will have space on
the walls to hang posters, table and chairs, and room for the robots. He
expects about a third of the 200 people in the audience will be under 16. In
addition there will be the radio club members, the performers and members of
local media.
If anyone is interested he has invited us to the NJ Antique Radio Club meeting
the evening of Friday October 10 to scout the place out. Also if anyone has any
sort of radio presentation they would put them on the agenda for the Oct 10
meeting (Earl, any of your SETI League members?)
Please let me know if you can help out on November 1st. It should be a lot of
fun. Anyone who needs a ride could take the train to the Beth Ayres station
that afternoon and I could give them a ride.
Thanks,
Gary Fisher

1.Political
Outreach
We are still in need of volunteers to help set up meeting
with their local politicians.There
are plenty of resources available from the political task force to make this as
easy of a process as possible. We
need to begin contacting politicians now to set up meetings, as this is a
somewhat time-consuming process. Please email me if you are available to help with this incredibly
important project.
2.Mars Outreach
Initiative
The Penn State Mars Society is spearheading a large-scale
outreach program in mid-February entitled the Mars Outreach Initiative. This
program will educate the public about Mars, especially in relation to the MERS
rovers and Mars Express Beagle 2 lander that will be arriving in late December
and January. We will be setting up displays at our own campus and in various
museums and libraries around Pennsylvania. These
small exhibits will feature not only the current missions but also the
endeavors of past and future missions to Mars.
Currently, we are planning on hosting a large exhibit at PennState – University
Park campus, as well as participating in
Engineer’s Week at the CarnegieScienceCenter in Pittsburgh. We are currently contacting other
museums and libraries across the state to host small exhibits. Please visit the MOI web site at: http://www.psums.org/moi for more
information.Additionally, we will
need help setting up exhibits across the state. If you have any contacts at museums, or
want to give presentations as part of this event, please contact me.

Kevin Sloan
PSU Chapter of Mars Society -
Informational Meeting:
The PSU Mars Society is a student organization involved in research and
outreach pertaining to the manned exploration of Mars. Our current research
project involves the design and construction of a modular research rover that
is controlled by a user with virtual reality gloves. The purpose of this
project is to investigate methods to increase an astronaut’s productivity
and efficiency during planetary exploration. Additionally we are heavily involved
in education and public outreach. We are currently designing several Mars
exploration exhibits that will be on display across the state during this
coming February. Work with K-12 students and teachers also
plays a big role in our outreach. The PSU Mars Society will be holding
an informational meeting at 7:00pm
on Thursday, September 18th, in 109 EE West. There will also be free pizza and
drinks at the meeting. Please visit http://www.psums.org or email Kevin Sloan (kfs113@...)
for more information.
And Mars Society members are welcome too!

At the 6th Annual International Mars Society
Conference in Eugene, Oregon, Dr. Robert Zubrin outlined his vision
for a large scale political outreach effort. An incredible amount of
pressure is currently being thrown on NASA in light of the Columbia accident report. Additionally, the world's attention is
turning towards Mars with its historic close passing to Earth; and this
attention will only continue to grow in the coming months with the arrival of
multiple missions. All of this will be coinciding with the beginning of
political campaigning season.
With the above in mind, Dr. Zubrin
has set the goal of meeting with at least 300 Senators and Representatives
throughout the coming year. With 21 members of the two houses from Pennsylvania, the PA Chapters need to meet with at least 12; although there's
no reason we can't meet with all 21!
Several other chapters have already gotten
heavily involved with contacting their local politicians and setting up
meetings. I need volunteers from
the PA Chapters to help establish our political work. There is a large quantity of material
already available from other chapters, so this will not be a terribly taxing
job.It will mainly consist of
putting together letters, and contacting politicians. If you are interested in helping, or
have any questions, please contact me asap!
It’s that time again to start thinking about the
annual Mars Society Conference. This year it will be held in Eugene, Oregon from August
14-17.The Penn State Chapter will
be sending a small group. We will
most likely be giving a couple of talks on our work at the Conference while
there (more information on these lectures to follow). If you want more information on traveling
to Oregon, or just
about the Conference in general, please feel free to email me.This is a great opportunity to meet
other members from other chapters, learn about Mars Society projects, and find
out how you can become involved at the larger level.Below is the Conference announcement.
The
2003 Conference in Eugene,
Oregon
is 2 months away. The deadline for
early registration is 30 June.Now
is the time to contact your members and forge a delegation from your chapter.Set a goal.I encourage you to estimate how many
people are coming from your chapter, double it and add 10%.This the number
to shoot for.
This
year and early 2004 is teeming with Mars:ESA's Mars Express (2 crafts, including Britian's Beagle II lander);
NASA's twin MER rovers; Japan's Nazomi and
unparalleled viewing of Mars as it will be closer to earth than it has been in
recorded history.There is
unprecedented opportunity to make our voices heard in DC and have input into
the future direction of NASA.Mars
will be featured in mainstream TV, magazines and newspapers.Seize this opportunity to increase your
presentations and educational outreach.Partner with your local museums and astronomy associations.
Most
importantly, come to the Mars Society convention and gather the information you
need to go forth and inform the public. Come and get first hand reports about
the successful season at MDRS and the types of research the Mars Society is
conducting.Learn why Project
Prometheus is important to our goals.Attend a workshop on Political Outreach - how to successfully meet with
your representatives.Get the
latest on the Mars Gravity Biosatellite.Hear the latest on Mars Global Surveyor from Dr. Bill Hartmann
himself.Discuss Shuttle plans -
post-Columbia.As I get more
information on presentations I will pass them along.
The
auction always has interesting space memorabilia to bid on.And the "town meeting" gives
you the opportunity to voice your opinion on the future of the Mars Society.
So
start contacting your members and getting them registered for the
conference.Feel free to pass this
along directly to your members.
200
years ago, Lewis and Clark set out to explore a new frontier.100 years
ago,
Orville and Wilbur did the same.In 2003, let's pull together to
explore
Mankind's next great Frontier - On to Mars !

I would like to apologize to all of you for the
inappropriate emails which were sent out over this listserv over the last
couple of days.We have kept this
as an open forum for the purpose of free exchange of ideas and information
related to the Mars Society.Unfortunately the growing problem of spam emails has gotten to the point
that people are joining this listserv for the sole purpose of sending out
unsolicited messages.Until I can
find a better solution for this problem, I have changed the group settings such
that only moderators may send out messages. If you have something to post, please do
not hesitate to send it to me, and I will pass it along to everybody.Thank you all for your patience in this
matter.
