NEGOTIATING THE IDEAL FACULTY POSITION WORKSHOP
(for female scientists)
October 14-16th, at Rice University Application deadline: August
1st
Application at: http://www.advance.rice.edu/negotiatingtheidealfacultyposition/form_intro.html
This workshop provides a unique opportunity for prospective women faculty
to learn from faculty leaders across all science and engineering disciplines
how to negotiate the ideal faculty position, and includes everything from
how to stand out in the interview to time management after you set-up your
lab. The informal format allows participants and faculty to interact, relax,
build relationships, and learn from each other. In addition to learning
invaluable skills and perspectives, workshop participants receive feedback
about their technical presentation and have individual meetings with department
chairs and senior faculty at Rice. Sessions include:
* What Is a Search Committee Looking For? Putting Together a Successful
Faculty Application
* How to Stand Out in the Interview: How to Maximize the Impact of Your
Interview Seminar
* Finding the Right Institutional Fit for You: How to (Safely) Find Out
About the Culture of the Department and College
* How and When To Negotiate a Good Start Up Package
* How to Obtain Funding
* Teaching Your First Course: Balancing Teaching and Research
* Building Your Lab: Getting the Most From a Mentor
* Understanding the Tenure Process
* Individual Meetings with Department Chairs and Key Senior Faculty to
practice giving technical talks
The cost of airfare, meals, and accommodations is provided at no cost to
participants.
Applications from last year were placed in a national database of Post-docs
and PhDs. This database was accessed by 124 different universities and
colleges, with 77% reporting they were working with a faculty search committee.
Applicants who would like their information put into this database should
apply for the workshop.
