_OTHER EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES_
_Science Club for Girls _
looking for a group of AWIS
volunteers to work with us again this year with a group of girls in 6-8th
grade at the King School at 100 Putnam Ave, Cambridge, from 3-4 p.m.
Commitment is 13 weeks beginning 9/21. Similar to last year, if a group
of ~5 commits, then not everyone has to show up each time but we will still
be able to maintain continuity. Extensive volunteer training is provided
on classroom management, and will be on Saturday, 9/15 from 10-1:30 at
Lesley College.
We will be using the Green Chemistry curriculum that Pfizer
has put together. Students assume the role of scientists in
the Research and Development Division of a Crayon Company, and are challenged
to follow the principles of green chemistry to manufacture a high quality,
benign product that uses fewer resources and creates less waste.
Students design and test their products, keep track of production costs
and choose who's product is the most sustainable.
Volunteers for our other sites are welcome. Details can be found on our website

Invite You To: Business Dining Etiquette
Speaker: Deborah Thomas-Nininger, a specialist in “Perception Management”
Learn business dining etiquette in a friendly setting! With over 20 years of
business
etiquette expertise, Deborah Thomas-Nininger is here to set the stage for a
positive
business dining experience. Do I sit or stand for introductions? Which bread
plate is mine?
Should I bother to introduce myself to the people at the table who are too far
away to talk?
Where do I put my napkin when I leave for the restroom? How do I talk and eat
simultaneously?
What if I drop something? What part of dinner should be for small talk and what
part is for
talking science and sealing the deal? If I’m squashed in the corner, how do I
leave the table
graciously?
Learn how proper etiquette can advance your career!

_Science Club for Girls and AWIS invite you to join us for a few hours
of science fun!_
Miz Wizard's Science Secrets!
Sunday, October 21, 3:30 PM and 7:30 PM shows
Please join us as we explore the triumphs and obstacles for women in
science through this solo performance that's guaranteed to make you
laugh, think, shake your head and clap for joy!
The setting: Barbara Knight, aka Miz Wizard, prepares for and tapes the
premiere show of Miz Wizard's Science Secrets for public access cable TV.
The "plot": With a sense of history and humor, Miz Wizard tells stories
about women and girls' contributions to science, engineering, invention,
and math... about revolutionary research and media portrayals... about
theories of sex difference over time... about obstacles faced and
overcome by women whose passion is discovery.
Who should come: EVERYONE. (Well, we do recommend that children be at
least 12). This show is not only for girls and women, nor only for those
interested in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. If you
can name no more than two women scientists (and Marie Curie is one of
the two) then you should certainly come! Do be aware that correct
biological terms like "ovary" do crop up now and again!
Location: The Broad Institute Auditorium, 7 Cambridge Center, Cambridge,
MA. For directions and maps see Acteva Registration Pages below.
Ticket Information:
$10.75 (Student/Youth/Low Income)
