2008 Mass-AWIS Mentoring Circle
The MASS AWIS Mentoring Committee is preparing to launch our new mentoring circle program in September. Thanks to the over 40 mentors and mentees who have already signed up to participate. There is still time to sign up—we need MENTORS so please consider registering if you are an advanced post-doc, young faculty member, industry employee etc…there are huge benefits to being a mentor as well!
April 1-July 15: Surveys open for enrollment
July 16-August 15: Mentoring Committee reviews surveys and assigns circles
August 16-September 5: Mentoring Circles are informed that they have matched a circle
Week of September 8, 2008: Mentoring Circle Orientation for all participants (Date to be set soon. This meeting is mandatory for participants)
Sept, 2008-April, 2009: Circles meet as often as they can/want (at least 1X month)
April 2009-Wrap up event and celebration for all participants

SCFG's mission is to increase the self-confidence and science literacy of K–12th grade girls belonging to groups that are underrepresented in the sciences, through free, after school programs that provide experiential learning, mentorship, and leadership opportunities. Girls work with mentor-scientists who model and foster leadership, affirm college as an expectation, and promote careers in science and technology as goals and options.

COURSE #1: "Leadership Training Program for Scientists"
Effective scientific work requires high levels of leadership competence in communications and collaboration. Oftentimes, scientists and engineers with strictly technical backgrounds are often limited in their leadership experience.
WHO: Candidates can be working in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry, in the technical or R&D environment. Candidates may be looking to assume a leadership position, or may be taking this class to explore a career change into a leadership role.

COURSE #2: "Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) Training for the Biotech Industry"
The goal of this course is to provide an introduction into the current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and to help companies and their employees remain in compliance with FDA requirements. GMP Training is a regulatory requirement by the FDA. The session will benefit individuals new to this highly regulated industry and will also serve as a refresher course for the experienced biotech employees.
WHO: Candidates can be working in either a pharmaceutical or biomanufacturing setting, within industry or academia, exploring the course for professional development, or looking to understand how cGMPs apply in the biotech industry.
