"How Can She Ask?": Negotiation and Gender in the Workplace

Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008

 6:00pm-9:00pm

REGISTER NOW

Description:
When it comes to negotiating for higher pay, women have a dilemma: negotiating for higher compensation is likely to pay off financially, but it's socially risky. Studies have shown that it is sensible for women to be more reticent about negotiating for higher pay than men, because they pay a higher social cost for doing so. Hannah Riley Bowles will present her current research on negotiation and gender, and identify strategies that women can use to overcome this compensation negotiation dilemma.

Note: This event is co-sponsored by the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) and Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (WEST).

 Speaker:
Hannah Riley Bowles is an Associate Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School whose research focuses primarily on gender in negotiation and the attainment of leadership positions. Bowles teaches leadership and negotiation in numerous executive programs, and is the faculty director of Women & Power, the Kennedy School's executive program for women leaders. She won the Kennedy School's 2003 Manuel Carballo Award for Excellence in Teaching. Earlier in her career, she was a research associate at the Conflict Management Group and Harvard Business School. She was a technical advisor to the Minister of Natural Resources, Energy & Mines of Costa Rica and has been a fellow at the Argentinean National Institute of Public Administration, the West German Parliament, and Oxford University's Forestry Institute. She has a DBA from the Harvard Business School, an MPP from the Kennedy School, and a BA from Smith College
