Massachussetts Chapter Presents:

CHOOSING A LAB

 Tuesday, June 16, 2009

5:30 - 8:30 pm

Harvard School of Dental Medicine,

190 Longwood Ave, Boston

Please join MASS-AWIS and GWIS for a discussion on choosing a graduate and post-doctoral lab. Choosing the right research lab can be one of the most important decisions of a scientist's professional life. Come to learn about the simple rules for selecting the perfect lab and how to get what you want (and need) from Graduate School once you join a lab. Feel free to bring questions for the Q&A session after the presentations.

Featured speakers:
Joanne Kamens, PhD - Director of Discovery, RXi Pharmaceuticals, Worcester, MA
Sharotka Simon, PhD - Post-doctoral fellow, Brandeis University, MA

A mentoring circle is a collection of mentoring relationships that meets together on a regular basis for an agreed upon length of time. The group’s primary purpose is to help mentees accomplish two tasks:

1. Set important development goals

2. Build competence and character to reach those goals

The group exchanges experiences, challenges, and opportunities for the purpose of enhancing self-confidence, communication skills, leadership practices, and commitment to one’s career.

The AWIS Mentoring Circles have been designed to:

·         Provide an opportunity for members to meet in open, candid and interactive forums to share and benefit from common interests and needs

·         Help members develop a network of business contacts and resources

·         Encourage learning and the exchange of information and ideas between peers and senior to executive level individuals

·         Foster growth and self-development
