Catalyst Releases Report Addressing Barriers to Women's Advancement
Gender-based stereotyping and not fact-based information often informs senior executives' perceptions of men and women and misrepresents the true talents of women, which contributes to the startling gender gap in business leadership. This is according to "Women 'Take Care,' Men 'Take Charge': Stereotyping of U.S. Business Leaders Exposed," a study by Catalyst. The effects of gender-based stereotyping can be devastating, potentially undermining women's capacity to lead, and pose serious challenges to women's career advancement, the study finds. Harvard Provost Office Is Restructured
In an effort to grow with the times, the Harvard University Office of the Provost has undergone a reorganization over the past several months. The purpose is to accomplish better faculty representation in the administration, develop a more diverse faculty, and to improve the University's capacity to recruit underrepresented groups, especially women and minorities. For more on the restructuring, visit http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2005/10.20/03-provost.html.
Women Faculty Make Little Progress
The percentage of women faculty members in the top 50 chemistry departments has increased only slightly. Women are still vastly underrepresented among full professors, despite slow and steady progress between the 2000-01 and 2005-06 academic years, according to a survey by Chemical & Engineering News. Currently, women represent 13% of the total chemistry faculty, a rise from the 12% last year. For more, visit http://pubs.acs.org/cen/education/83/8344women.html.

-New Girls Website in Science/Technology/Math    http://www.zoeysroom.com
Zoey's Room, an interactive website and after-school community for girls ages 10-14, launched nationally this fall, encouraging girls to start exploring the "hard skills" of math, science and technology. We know that girls work best in a collaborative environment-- not by sitting and staring at a male teacher lecture in a classroom. We also know that girls need support and encouragement from other Fab Females in these fields in order to remain interested. Zoey's Room was created with these basic needs in mind--
Zoey's Room is currently the only website out there with a multi-ethnic character, "Zoey," who chats every day after school with girls in her specially protected room. Once girls are comfortable, they're motivated to try Zoey's online challenges in math, environmental engineering, hard science, nanotechnology, database and web design (to name a few) in order to win big prizes like digital cameras and wireless mice from Logitech.
Since September already more than 60 girls and more than 9 YWCAS all around New England have joined to make this one of the coolest cyber communities for girls. We're hitting the national scene now and could use your help. Please check out our site and spread the word through your own websites, newsletters, blogs and articles. We will be happy to write articles as well. The 'Net community of women in these fields is strong and that's why we're spreading the word electronically.
