Our second evening of science will take place at the Massachusetts Biologic Laboratories featuring special speakers:
Donna Ambrosino MD - director of Massacusetts Biologics  and
Dilara McCauley, Ph.D., Senior Product Manager at Predix Pharmaceuticals
The MBL, located in Jamaica Plain, is one of only a few publicly operated, FDA-licensed vaccine manufacturing facilities in the country, and is the only one of its kind still operated by a state government. Throughout its history, the labs have introduced into general statewide use vaccines to prevent diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and other diseases.
Other functions of the lab include the development of basic research ideas into new vaccines and plasma products for commercialization and distribution nationwide. Scientists there pioneered such products as the respiratory syncytial virus immune globulin, the first drug to protect infants and toddlers from serious complications of respiratory viruses.
The lab also develops and manufactures "orphan" drugs for diseases that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. Orphan drugs are a public health responsibility because they are needed by too few people to hold enough "commercial appeal" for development by private drug companies.
Don't miss this opportunity to hear more about and visit the MBL and to meet some of your fellow AWIS members.
