MASS- AWIS "Sharing Science"--Tuesday, February 14th, 5:30-7:30 PM at the Mass Biologic Labs, No charge for this event.
RSVP REQUIRED! It is necessary for the Mass Biologic Labs to have a list
of attendees..RSVPing is EASY using our new ACTEVA system....click on this

Our second evening of science will take place at the Massachusetts
Biologic Laboratories featuring special speakers:
Donna Ambrosino MD - director of Massacusetts Biologics and
Dilara McCauley, Ph.D., Senior Product Manager at Predix Pharmaceuticals
The MBL, located in Jamaica Plain, is one of only a few publicly operated,FDA-licensed vaccine manufacturing facilities in the country, and is the only one of its kind still operated by a state government. Throughout its history, the labs have introduced into general statewide use vaccines to prevent diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and other diseases. The lab also develops and manufactures "orphan" drugs for diseases that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States.
Don't miss this opportunity to hear more about and visit the MBL and to
meet some of your fellow AWIS members.

MASS AWIS will sponsor the next Women in Research Day at the Museum of Science, Apr 1
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO ATTEND THIS GREAT EVENT--CONSIDER BEING A MENTOR AND A ROLE MODEL FOR GIRLS INTERESTED IN SCIENCE!!!! See below for details, but email me back if you are interested in participating as part of the AWIS group.
Dear Women in Science,
Since 2004, I have coordinated an annual April event at the Museum of Science, Women in Research Day. To see an archive of the day, go to http://www.mos.org/cst/article/6110/5.html The day consists of about 30 women researchers from the graduate to the professional level and 100 young women from local junior high and high schools. We meet in the late morning on the first Saturday in April (April 1, 2006) to network and then
meet the girls in the afternoon. The day is only about three hours long, with four short presentations by randomly selected researchers. The rest of the women sit at stations with signs that designate their school or chosen field of study. The girls wander around and talk to the scientists that represent their field of interest. I give the girls free admission to the Museum of Science they have no barriers to talking with women working in science.
Volunteers should plan to stay for the three hours of the event 12-3, and speakers can come to the museum to meet with me in the week prior to the event and quickly go over their presentation. If you come on the day, you can stay in the Museum of Science for free and bring a guest.
If any people in your group would like to volunteer their Saturday, I would be very appreciative. You would be encouraging the next generation of scientists by becoming role models to a group of
young women interested in science. It is a very small amount of time that has a very large impact. I would also encourage you to bring some materials from your labs to show the girls what you do. I am especially in need of women focusing on the physical sciences or engineering.
Best Regards,

"Venice, Finally out of Peril?"
Paola Malanotte-Rizzoli, Professor of Physical Oceanography in the
Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT
Thursday, February 23, 5:30-6:30 PM
MIT Bldg 1 Rm 134 (http://whereis.mit.edu)
Paola Malanotte-Rizzoli is a physical oceanographer interested in climate,
the general ocean circulation and ecosystem models, which she studies
through development of mathematical numerical models and assimilation of
different datasets into models. She also has worked to solve the problems
facing Venice, specifically modeling the Adriatic general circulation and
wind-wave field responsible for the destruction of the lagoon coastline
during the storms. She is currently working on the Venice problem as a
consultant for the construction of the mobile gates designed to close the
lagoon inlets and protect the city from the floods.

Wanted: Citizen Scientists…
Every year SustainUS -- the US Youth Network for Sustainable Development -- holds a science writing competition that offers winners an opportunity to attend and share their work at the UN during the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD). This year's paper competition has just opened in preparation for CSD14 -- May 1-12, 2006 in New York City. We will be accepting papers through March 3.
If you are between the ages of 13 and 26, study or work on science, and care passionately about addressing the world's toughest challenges, we encourage you to submit your science!
The CITIZEN SCIENTIST online journal honors young people in the United States who are enriching public dialogue with innovative, scientific approaches to sustainable development.
The Citizen Science Technical Board is accepting short scientific papers or review articles written for a non-scientist audience on natural or social science topics related to the economic, social, technological, or environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Papers need not describe original research, though original research is welcome and encouraged.
The Board will select the best articles for online publication in CITIZEN SCIENTIST. Authors of published papers will get the chance to present their work at CSD14. SustainUS will be joined by the US State Department in recognizing your leadership and insight upon publication.
Please refer to www.sustainus.org for more information and the official call for papers. If you have further questions please e-mail: CitizenScience@....
SustainUS is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of young people advancing sustainable development and youth empowerment in the United States. Through proactive education and advocacy at the policy-making and grassroots levels, we are building a future in which all people recognize the inherent equality and interdependence of social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
Citizen Science is the premier program where science, policy, and youth come together promoting Sustainable Development.
