-Thanks to Susan Sloan and Rosa Melendez for organizing our Sharing Science evening at MBL.  Special thanks to our excellent speakers Donna Ambrosino MD - director of Massacusetts Biologics  and Dilara McCauley, Ph.D., Senior Product Manager at Predix Pharmaceuticals.  Their input on how women can succeed in the science workplace was fascinating and invaluable.

-MASS AWIS will sponsor the next Women in Research Day at the Museum of Science, Apr 1
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO ATTEND THIS GREAT EVENT--CONSIDER BEING A MENTOR AND A ROLE MODEL FOR GIRLS INTERESTED IN SCIENCE!!!!  30 women researchers from the graduate to the professional level will host 100 young women from local junior high and high schools.  The girls wander around and talk to the scientists that represent their field of interest. You would be encouraging the next generation of scientists by becoming role models to a group of young women interested in science.  It is a very small amount of time that has a very large impact.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

-K-12 MASS AWIS outreach--TENTATIVE DATE:  Wednesday, March 22
Our chapter has reached 80 members with many active participants.  We hope to begin thinking about ways we can impact the younger generation and serve as positive role models for girls who are thinking of going into science.  This program will launch our efforts to coordinate some work in this area.  Reply for more information or just come to the event.

-Award-Winning Science AWIS/GWIS joint program
Wednesday, April 26, time and location TBA
Recent graduate student awardees will present their research.

-CALL FOR MENTORS - E-mentoring opportunity - just 20 minutes per week
The MentorNet One-on-One Mentoring Programs are a chance to make a big difference in the life of a student with as few as 1 or 2 emails/month.
MentorNet seeks science and engineering professionals in industry and government, either currently active, on leave, or retired, to mentor engineering and science community college, undergraduate, and graduate students, particularly women, who are interested in pursuing a professional future in the male-dominated fields of engineering and science.
Mentors are especially needed in the biological sciences and bio-engineering fields.
Mentoring relationships last 8 months. Because mentors and students communicate entirely by email, they can communicate wherever and whenever they choose. MentorNet's research-based programs have proven effective by providing "real world" information, encouragement, advice, and access to networks for students, and particularly for women.  "My mentor always gives me the encouragement that I need," says one MentorNet student.  "Sometimes those few words make a big difference to me."
How can you volunteer to be a mentor?
1) Join the MentorNet Community (http://www.mentornet.net/join)
2) Follow the One-on-One Mentoring Programs links to create a mentor profile.
Since 1998, MentorNet has matched more than 15,000 proteges and mentors with strong results.  We hope you will join them!

Mar 16     Behavioral Interviewing
Screening, selling and selecting the right candidate is essential for your organization's success.  How do you identify those who can do the job from those who can simply get the job?  How can you best attract them to your opportunity?  This workshop covers the gamut – from setting goals, to legal issues, to tracking results.  Focusing on behavioral interviewing techniques, you'll be able to distinguish the real from the hypothetical.  Bring one job description you are seeking to fill now or in the future.  Facilitated by Sandy Chen, HR Director at Synta Pharmaceuticals, who brings more than 5 years in the Biotech industry and has grown Synta from 60 to 165 employees in 3 years
Apr 27     After "Hello"-- Conversational Protocols
Ever find yourself wondering, what do I say next? when you want to build rapport with colleagues at company meetings, conferences, or when you're managing by walking around?  Conversation, the core of communication - the way we relate, explain, motivate, learn, amuse, and connect, is key to managerial leadership and overall success.  Conversation builds the relationships that build commitment to shared goals.  Increase your skills and comfort in the art and science of connecting, and have fun doing it.  Facilitated by Elaine Crowley of The Crowley Group, with 20 years in Biotech and 10 in High Tech building leadership and communication skills.
