JOIN MASS AWIS TODAY!!
www.awis.org
Whether you attend 1 meeting a year
or 12 or none...joining our chapter supports the work of the Association
for Women in Science!
Don't wait, join the chapter today--student/retiree/unemployed
rates available!
Our chapter continues to grow. We
had an informal dinner board meeting at the Golden Temple in Brookline
this week. As the chapter becomes more established, we have new needs
for your help and input! Currently we are planning a series of Leadership
Programs designed to help young women who are about to enter the work force
with skills that will make a difference in their careers. Planning
will begin this month, contact us if you would like to help in this first
large mentoring outreach effort.
Go to our temporary website for more
info: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/massawis
Other areas where you can easily contribute--get
back to us with suggestions or information if you can help:
--Do you have a good venue for future
AWIS programs? We are looking for suggestions for large events as
well as locations for monthly smaller events for the coming year. Locations
should probably be T accessible and have parking available in the evenings.
--Do you work at a company that might
make a donation to our chapter? Would you be able to supply the name
of a contact person for us to solicit for such a contribution? We
have a fundraising letter prepared, but just need ideas and contacts to
make our success rate higher.
--Do you know anything about website
maintenance? We have a website designed, but want to set up a system
for maintaining it.
--Do you have speaker or program ideas?
We are always looking for good programs and event ideas.

Lotte Bailyn is a Professor of Management
(in the Organization Studies Group) at MIT's Sloan School of Management
and Co-Director of the MIT Workplace Center. In her work she has set out
the hypothesis that by challenging the assumptions in which current work
practices are embedded, it is possible to meet the goals of both business
productivity and employees' family and community concerns, and to do so
in ways that are equitable for men and women. Her most recent book, Beyond
Work-Family Balance: Advancing Gender Equity and Workplace Performance
with Rhona Rapoport, Joyce K. Fletcher, and Bettye H. Pruitt (Jossey
Bass, 2002) chronicles a decade of experience working with organizations
that supports this hypothesis, while also showing how difficult it is to
challenge workplace assumptions.
