Lotte Bailyn is a Professor of Management (in the Organization Studies
Group) at MIT's Sloan School of Management and Co-Director of the MIT Workplace
Center. In her work she has set out the hypothesis that by challenging
the assumptions in which current work practices are embedded, it is possible
to meet the goals of both business productivity and employees' family and
community concerns, and to do so in ways that are equitable for men and
women. Her most recent book, Beyond Work-Family Balance: Advancing Gender
Equity and Workplace Performance with Rhona Rapoport, Joyce K. Fletcher,
and Bettye H. Pruitt(Jossey Bass, 2002) chronicles a decade of experience
working with organizations that supports this hypothesis, while also showing
how difficult it is to challenge workplace assumptions.
