Women, Science and Society Seminar Series
Thursday, October 19th, 6pm **Location Change** Jefferson Laboratory
250, 17A Oxford St., Cambridge
Dr. Phoebe Leboy
Dr. Leboy is a Professor of Biochemistry
in the School of Dental Medicine, at the University of Pennsylvania and
is also secretary of the NATIONAL AWIS EXECUTIVE BOARD
"Analyzing the Leaky Pipeline: Why are Women Scientists Under-represented
in Senior Positions?"
Last month, a panel convened by the National Academy of Sciences pointed
out that women in science and engineering are hindered by "outmoded
institutional structures in academia". Dr. Leboy will describe existing
policies and procedures in academic institutions that have built-in gender
biases. Some of these, such as "family-unfriendly" policies
that hinder professional advancement during the childbearing years, have
been the subjects of considerable study in recent years. Other problematic
policies and procedures have been ignored. Notably, the trend towards faculty
evaluations that emphasize quantity of publications and grants rather than
quality of scholarship has a disproportionate negative impact on careers
of women scientists.
