Many young scientists have no idea what to
do when faced with their first managerial challenges. Whether you
are facing these challenges now, or hope to in the future, come spend a
little time with AWIS to work on these crucial areas for success in the
science work place! Refreshments will be served during networking
time from 6-6:30.
Our distinguished speaker is Dr. Joan Brugge,
Chair of the Harvard Medical School Department of Cell Biology. Prior to
1997, she was the Scientific Director of ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in
Cambridge, MA. From 1989 to 1992, Dr. Brugge was a Professor of Microbiology
at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and an Investigator
of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. From 1979 to 1988, Dr. Brugge was
on the faculty of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, most
recently as Professor of Microbiology. Dr. Brugge has the unique
perspective of a woman who has succeed in both industry and academia and
we are happy to have an evening to learn from her experiences.

Help MIT Sophomores Appreciate the
Real World of Professional Practice
MIT School of Engineering's Undergraduate
Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP) provides engineering sophomores opportunities
to practice and/or appreciate
engineering outside the academic context
and prepares them to hit the ground running in the workplace.
The program is currently seeking alumni and
employers to serve as facilitators in the 2007 Introduction to Engineering
Practice Workshop.
Facilitators are responsible for helping
the Sloan and Engineering School Faculty execute the team-based modules
and role plays, delivering feedback to students in small groups, and serving
as ambassadors for their respective professions and/or companies to students.
Typically, facilitators have between 5 and 40 years professional experience
and come from a wide range of industries including aero/space, finance,
strategy consulting, software, automotive and life sciences. Past facilitators
have included an astronaut, a retired CEO of a medium sized robotics company,
newly promoted software development manager, HR director, president of
a leadership training company, vice president of engineering for a small
start-up and an MBA student.
The Workshop will be offered twice in January
2007. The program is seeking
facilitators for both sessions.
Session 1:
Monday, January 22 -- Friday, January 26
9am - 5pm
A mandatory facilitator training and orientation
workshop will be held on Thursday, January 18, and Friday, January 19.
Session 2:
Monday, January 29 -- Friday, February 2
9am - 5pm
A mandatory facilitator training and orientation
workshop will be held on Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26
