Many young scientists have no idea what to do when faced with their first managerial challenges.  Whether you are facing these challenges now, or hope to in the future, come spend a little time with AWIS to work on these crucial areas for success in the science work place!  Refreshments will be served during networking time from 6-6:30.
Our distinguished speaker is Dr. Joan Brugge, Chair of the Harvard Medical School Department of Cell Biology. Prior to 1997, she was the Scientific Director of ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in Cambridge, MA. From 1989 to 1992, Dr. Brugge was a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. From 1979 to 1988, Dr. Brugge was on the faculty of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, most recently as Professor of Microbiology.  Dr. Brugge has the unique perspective of a woman who has succeed in both industry and academia and we are happy to have an evening to learn from her experiences.

Book Reading with Analee Newitz & Charlie Anders editors of She's Such a Geek
Thursday, January 11 @ 7:00PM  Location TBA
see the website  http://www.centerfornewwords.org/events/2006/08/analee_newitz_charlie_anders.php
She’s Such a Geek is a groundbreaking anthology that celebrates women who have flourished in the male-dominated realms of technical and cultural arcana.
Editors Annalee Newitz and Charlie Anders bring together a diverse range of critical and personal essays about the meaning of female nerdhood by women who are in love with genomics, obsessed with blogging, learned about sex from Dungeons and Dragons, and aren’t afraid to match wits with men or computers. More than anything, She’s Such a Geek is a celebration and call to arms: it’s a hopeful book which looks forward to a day when women will invent molecular motors, design the next ultra-tiny supercomputer, and run the government.
