Call for Papers

*The First Workshop on Behavioural Modelling in Model-Driven
Architecture (BM-MDA) http://www.ou.nl/bm-mda
University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands. 23 June 2009*

In collaboration with the Fifth European Conference on Model Driven Architecture
Foundations and Applications http://www.utwente.nl/projecten/ecmda2009/

========================================================
The Model-driven Architecture (MDA) features the use of different kinds
of models during the software development process and automatic
transformations between them. One of the main ideas is the separation
between models that are platform independent (PIMs) and models that are
platform specific (PSM). From these models, some parts of the final code
can be automatically generated. Ultimately, the goal is to generate the
complete software fully automatically from these models.

To date, the fully automatic generation of the code from models is still
a dream and, if it works at all, restricted to specific application
areas. One of the main obstacles is the lack of adequate models for the
behaviour of the software and of mechanisms to integrate behaviour
models with structural models and with other behaviour models. There are
different approaches for modelling behaviour in the UML:

     * Use UML Behavioural State Machines ("Executable UML"), which have
       semantics that borrow largely from work in real-time systems.
     * Use OCL to add behavioural information (such as pre- and
       post-conditions) to other, more structural, types of UML model
     * Not include behaviour in the PIM at all, but instead add it as
       code to structural code skeletons later in the MDA process
     * Strengthen the semantics of other UML notations (in particular,
       Sequence Diagrams) so that these can be used to capture complete
       behavioural information as part of the PIM.
     * Transform Class and Sequence Diagrams into graphs using
       graph-transformation rules in order to create a set of graphs that
       represent the state-space of the bahaviour. Then, model checking
       techniques are applied on this state-space to verify certain
       properties of the UML models.

Although there are many different approaches for modelling behaviour, none of
them enjoys the same universality as the UML class diagrams do for the
structural parts of the software.

Further evidence of confusion about PIM level behavioural modelling is the lack
of agreement on what basic behavioural abstractions are required, and how these
behavioural abstractions should be used:

     * Does the concept of "Component" have meaning at the PIM level, and
       how should it be defined?
     * Does the concept of "Active Objects" (as used in many real-time
       modelling techniques) have meaning at the PIM level? And does it
       only apply to real-time system modelling?
     * What forms of composition should be used between behavioural
       abstractions in the context of MDA?
     * What role should Aspects play in PIM level behavioral modelling?

This workshop brings together people from academia and industry using MDA and
related approaches and, in particular, is concerned with behaviour models and
their integration with MDA. We are interested in submissions on topics relating
to MDA and PIM level behaviour modelling, including:

     * Ontologies of behavioural abstractions and their applicability;
     * Modelling languages that aim to capture PIM level behaviour;
     * Composition and decomposition of behavioural models;
     * Application of process algebraic techniques;
     * Application of formal reasoning to PIM level behaviour models;
     * Translation of PIM level behaviour to PSM and code;
     * Method and Tool Support for building PIM level behavioural models;
     * Case studies that relate to the use of PIM level behavioural
       modelling.

The purpose is to better understand the problem with behavioural models, what is
needed to adequately model behaviour, and what is still lacking for universally
modelling the behaviour of software in such a way that the code can
automatically be generated from them. Based on that, the outcome of the workshop
will be a clearer vision of how modelling notations for behaviour and the
interfaces to structural models should look like.

============================================================================

Background and Goals
--------------------
The Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) is an approach to the development
of IT systems fostered by the Object Management Group (OMG) that
separates the specification of the system functionality from its
implementation on a particular platform. A common pattern of MDA
development is to define a platform-independent model (PIM) of a
system, and to apply (parameterised) transformations to this PIM to
obtain one or more platform-specific models (PSMs). In this context,
PIMs are reusable models that consolidate the application development
effort. Furthermore, MDA advocates the use of OMG core technology,
especially the Meta-Object Facility (MOF) and MOF-compliant languages
  such as UML and CWM. In Model-Driven Development the MDA principles
and technologies are applied in the development of software systems.
MDD is already around for some years and is about to become commodity
in software development due to its benefits (reduction on development
costs, improvement of software quality, reduction of maintenance
costs and the support for controlled evolution of IT systems). MDD has
also been applied in many application areas, such as real-time and
embedded systems, and telecommunication systems, and, more recently,
to the development and integration of enterprise information systems.
However, the MDD research community is wishing to explore the bounds
of MDD, by investigating new applications areas and combinations with
other emerging technologies, like, for example, pervasive
context-aware systems, Semantic web, Semantic web services, SOA and
ontologies. This workshop aims at fostering the further development
and application of MDD techniques. This workshop builds upon its
predecessor, the International Workshop on Model-Driven Enterprise
Information Systems.

Keynote Speaker
---------------
A keynote speaker will be invited to address the workshop on future
trends on the theory, practise and applications of MDD techniques.

Paper submission
----------------
The workshop welcomes three types of submissions:
1. Full papers describing novel ideas on MDD at either a practical or
theoretical level. The maximum length of a full paper is 10 pages.

2. Position papers describing work in progress or an author's position
regarding the current MDD practice and/or its future trends. The
maximum length of a position paper is 4 pages.

3. Demonstrations of a particular prototype approach or tool
applicable to MDD. The demonstration should be accompanied by a paper
with a maximum length of 4 pages. The demonstration will be shown
during the workshop.

Instructions for preparing the manuscript (in Word and Latex format)
are available at the ICEIS web site. Papers should be submitted online
through the online submission system accessible via:
http://www.iceis.org/Workshops.htm (FTMDD workshop)

All papers will be reviewed on the basis of relevance, clarity and
technical quality. At least one author should attend the workshop to
present the paper.

All accepted papers will be published in workshop proceedings book
with an ISBN#, which will be printed by INSTICC Press. The proceedings
will be available at the time of the workshop.
Publication of selected papers from the workshop in a special issue in

ECMDA-FA 2009

Fifth European Conference on
Model-Driven Architecture
Foundations and Applications

University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands

23-26 June 2009

http://ecmda2009.utwente.nl

Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) is an initiative proposed by the
Object Management Group (OMG) for platform-independent software
development. It promotes the use of models in the specification,
design, analysis, synthesis, deployment, and evolution of complex
software systems.

ECMDA-FA is dedicated to advancing the state of knowledge and
fostering the industrialisation of the MDA methodology. Its focus
is on engaging key figures of research and industry, in Europe and
elsewhere, in a dialogue which will result in a stronger, more
efficient industry, producing more reliable software on the basis
of state-of-the-art research results. The 2009 conference will be
again organised in two tracks dealing with the foundations and
applications of MDA. There will be additional workshops, tools and
poster exhibitions on these subjects.

ECMDA-FA 2009 is proud to host the following keynote speakers:

– David Harel, The Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel
– Tim Trew, NXP Semiconductors, The Netherlands
– Akira Ohata, Toyota Motors, Japan

Topics

ECMDA has two separate paper tracks, one for research papers
(Track F) and one for industrial papers (Track A). Each track will
be judged differently. The academic track will be reviewed using
common academic review guidelines, focusing on novel contributions
to knowledge. Papers in the industrial track may be shorter and
will be judged against special guidelines, as described below.

Research Papers on Foundations of MDA (Academic Track F)

In this track, we are soliciting papers presenting original
research on all aspects of MDA. Typical but not exclusive topics
of interest are:

KISS Workshop on Fundamental Aspects of DSL Interoperability
http://www.industrialized-software.org/kiss-aswec-2009

Gold Coast, Australia, 14 April, 2009

Held in conjunction with ASWEC 2009
http://aswec2009.itee.uq.edu.au/

Related KISS workshops
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 8 June 2009 @ CAiSE 2009
http://www.industrialized-software.org/kiss-caise-2009
Cambridge, United Kingdom, 16 June 2009 @ Code Generation 2009
http://www.industrialized-software.org/kiss-cg-2009

Background and Aims
-------------------

The main motivation for the use of a DSL is the desire to express
problems in a compact form that reflects the natural terminology
of human domain experts, and that is easily accessible to software
tools. In short, DSLs are raising the level of abstraction of
software specifications and of knowledge representation in general.
When DSLs are used to formalize the results of domain analysis,
the result is a clean separation of concerns in the problem space.
The value of a DSL increases with the intuitiveness of the concrete
syntax. Visual and graphical elements may be needed to increase
usability, and often such languages are referred to as domain
specific modelling languages (DSML).

The level of interoperability between current DSL tools is
comparable to the level of interoperability between CASE tools
in the 90s. To increase the popularity of DSL based approaches,
this needs to change. With the extensive use of outsourcing and
with the increasing investment in open-source software, software
development has become highly decentralized, and an assumption
that all parties in a global software supply chain will use
identical tooling is simply not realistic. As a result today's
software supply chains are much less automated than supply chains
in other, more mature industries.

In order to increase awareness about the role that domain specific
modeling languages can play in capturing, preserving, and exploiting
knowledge in virtually all industries, it is necessary to establish
a strong consensus on the fundamental values and principles that
underpin the use of domain specific modeling languages.

KISS aims to provide guidelines to support the use of domain specific
methods and technologies in industry. In particular, KISS will
support the construction of tool-chains that are built by third
parties using components consisting of a mixture of commercial and
open-source DSL tools.

The KISS series of conference workshops and related events is used
to incrementally create a consensus that can be expressed in a form
similar to the agile manifesto and the fundamental agile principles.

Objectives
----------

1. To achieve a strong consensus on fundamental values and principles
for designing and using Domain Specific Languages.

2. To progress towards interoperability between DSL tools through the
use of open-source technologies.

Topics of Interest
------------------

* Fundamental values and principles for designing and using domain
specific modeling languages (DSMLs).

* Classification of the different kinds of DSML tool components, and
the artefacts created and exchanged between DSML tool components.

* Descriptions of existing or planned industrial projects that
illustrate the need for improved DSML tool interoperability.

* Evaluations of existing meta-meta model implementations, comparisons
of meta-meta model implementations, and proposals of new meta-meta
models that are conducive for improving DSML tool interoperability.

* Proposals for useful levels of DSML tool interoperability.

* Case studies of attempts (successful or not) to increase
interoperability between two or more DSML tools.

* Concrete tool interoperability requirements from organizations that
use DSMLs.

* Building an open community that owns interoperability standards for
DSML tools.

* Approaches that can be used for practical certification of tools
with respect to interoperability levels.

Important Dates
---------------

16 February 2009 Submission deadline for papers for publication
1 March 2009 Submission of Position Papers

least 4 pages and should not exceed 13 pages using the correct
style (including references and appendices).

* The first page should begin with the title of the paper, author
names (contact author underlined), affiliations, and e-mail
addresses, followed by an abstract of no more than 150 words.

* In order to be considered for publication authors should use the
Springer format: follow the instructions at

            Denver, Colorado, USA October 4-9, 2009

                  http://www.modelsconference.org/

The MODELS Conference Series
----------------------------
… is devoted to model-based development for software and systems
engineering,
covering all categories of modeling languages, methods, tools, and
their
applications. Engineering models have long been used in the development
of
complex systems and the approach is also becoming more prevalent in
the
design of modern software systems. Methodologies and tools are
emerging
and applied successfully in practice. They create and manipulate such
models
starting with the earliest phases of development through to
implementation
and testing.

The MODELS series of conferences (http://www.modelsconference.org/) is
the premier venue for the exchange of innovative technical ideas and
experiences relating to model-based approaches in the development of
complex systems. To provide a broader forum for reporting on
scientific
progress as well as experiences and issues stemming from practical
application of model-based methods, the 2009 conference has two
distinct
tracks:

                 * A scientific track
                 * An empirical results track

Papers in each track will be evaluated by separate program committees
based
on criteria appropriate to that track.

Call for Papers – The Scientific Track
--------------------------------------
Over the years model-based development has gained rapidly increasing
popularity
across various engineering disciplines. Numerous efforts resulted in
the
invention of concepts, languages, and tools for the definition,
analysis,
transformation, and extension of domain-specific modeling languages as
well as
general-purpose modeling language standards. Problems in this domain
span
multiple disciplines and have to be addressed by collaborative
research
activities spanning domains such as industrial automation, business
engineering,
hardware/software co-design, real-time system development, Web 2.0
application
design, and so forth.

A primary objective of the scientific track of MODELS is to build a
forum for
exchange and discussion of new research results dedicated to advancing
the
state-of-the-art of model-based development in general. Topics of
interest
include but are not limited to:

  * Development of domain-specific modeling languages
  * Design of general-purpose modeling languages and related standards
  * Definition of the syntax and semantics of modeling languages
  * Tools and meta-tools for modeling languages and model-based
development
  * Definition and usage of model transformation and generation
approaches
  * Development of systems engineering and modeling-in-the-large
concepts
  * Proposals of new model quality assurance techniques
  * Integration of modeling languages and tools (hybrid multi-modeling)
  * Evolution of modeling languages and models
  * New modeling paradigms and formalisms

Submission Process – Scientific Track

Long (15 pages) and short (5 pages) paper submissions must conform to
the
Springer LNCS formatting guidelines:

      http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-72376-0

All submissions must be original, unpublished, and not submitted
simultaneously
for publication elsewhere. They will undergo a thorough review process
by a
track-specific committee comprising leading experts from academia and
industry;
however, papers that are too long or violate the LNCS formatting
instructions
will be rejected. Accepted papers will be published in a conference
proceedings
by Springer in the LNCS series.

Authors of best papers from the conference will be invited to revise
and submit
extended versions of their papers for a special issue of the Journal on

Software and Systems Modeling (Springer Press).

For further details concerning the submission process consult

      http://www.modelsconference.org/

Call for Papers – The Empirical Results Track
---------------------------------------------
As with any emerging technical discipline, model-based engineering
approaches to
software and system development give rise to a unique set of challenges
related
to practical application. These include a very diverse list of issues
such as
problems of scaling to multi-domain and geographically distributed
teams,
difficulties of integrating new methods and tools into legacy
environments,
resistance to culture change, and coping with immature technologies.
Nevertheless, there are numerous practical examples of industrial
application of
model-based engineering in which such problems have been overcome,
resulting in
successful systems that clearly demonstrate the viability and the
advantages of
model-based methods. Unfortunately, there is still insufficient
awareness among
many practitioners of such results and the potential of these methods
for
delivering major increases in productivity and product quality. A
primary
objective of the MODELS empirical results track is to provide a
realistic and
verifiable picture of the current state-of-the-practice of model-based
engineering.

Both long and short papers are sought. In addition to experience
reports, papers
that describe innovative solutions and concepts stemming from practical
application
of model-based methods and tools in industrial settings are deemed
highly relevant
to this track. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  * Introducing model-based approaches into organizations
  * Experience stories in general (successful and unsuccessful)
  * How to scale modeling to many users and large models
  * Issues related to current model-based engineering standards
  * Engineering and managing sets of modeling languages
  * Integrating models into a development environment
  * Experience with model-based engineering tools

Please visit the conference website

      http://www.modelsconference.org/

for more information.

Submission Process – Empirical Results Track

Long (15 pages) and short (5 pages) paper submissions must conform to
the
Springer LNCS formatting guidelines:

       http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-72376-0

All submissions must be original, unpublished, and not submitted
simultaneously
for publication elsewhere. They will undergo a thorough review process
by a
track-specific committee comprising leading experts from academia and
industry;
however, papers that are too long or violate the LNCS formatting

Conference on
                       Enterprise Information Systems (http://
www.iceis.org/)
                                        Milan, Italy

Background and Goals
--------------------
The Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) is an approach to the development
of IT systems fostered by
the Object Management Group (OMG) that separates the specification of
the system functionality
from its implementation on a particular platform. A common pattern of
MDA development is to define
a platform-independent model (PIM) of a system, and to apply
(parameterised) transformations to this
PIM to obtain one or more platform-specific models (PSMs). In this
context, PIMs are reusable
models that consolidate the application development effort.
Furthermore, MDA advocates the use of
OMG core technology, especially the Meta-Object Facility (MOF) and
MOF-compliant languages
such as UML and CWM. In Model-Driven Development the MDA principles
and technologies are
applied in the development of software systems.

MDD is already around for some years and is about to become commodity
in software development
due to its benefits (reduction on development costs, improvement of
software quality, reduction of
maintenance costs and the support for controlled evolution of IT
systems). MDD has also been applied
in many application areas, such as real-time and embedded systems, and
telecommunication systems,
and, more recently, to the development and integration of enterprise
information systems. However,
the MDD research community is wishing to explore the bounds of MDD, by
investigating new
applications areas and combinations with other emerging technologies,
like, for example, pervasive
context-aware systems, Semantic web, Semantic web services, SOA and
ontologies. This workshop
aims at fostering the further development and application of MDD
techniques. This workshop builds
upon its predecessor, the International Workshop on Model-Driven
Enterprise Information Systems.

Keynote Speaker
---------------
A keynote speaker will be invited to address the workshop on future
trends on the theory, practise and
applications of MDD techniques.

Paper submission
----------------
The workshop welcomes three types of submissions:
1. Full papers describing novel ideas on MDD at either a practical or
theoretical level. The
maximum length of a full paper is 10 pages.

LDTA: Workshop on Language Descriptions Tools and Applications
                   http://www.ldta.info

===Call For Papers 2009===

This is the Call For Papers for the Ninth Workshop on Language
Descriptions, Tools and Applications (LDTA 2009)

LDTA is a two-day satellite event of ETAPS which takes on the 28th and
29th of March 2009 in York, England.

Please submit your abstract and paper using
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ldta2009

==Scope==

LDTA is an application and tool oriented forum on meta programming in
a broad sense. A meta program is a program that takes other programs
as input or output. The focus of LDTA is on generated or otherwise
efficiently implemented meta programs, possibly using high level
descriptions of programming languages. Tools and techniques presented
at LDTA are usually applicable in the context of "Language
Workbenches" or "Meta Programming Systems" or simply as parts of
advanced programming environments or IDEs. The applications areas
include, but are not limited to:
* Program analysis, transformation, generation and verification
* Implementation of Domain Specific Languages (both visual and textual)
* Reverse engineering and reengineering
* Refactoring and other source-to-source transformations
* Application modelling (MDE, MDA, Software Factories, Software product lines)
* Grammar engineering / Grammarware
* Language definition and language prototyping
* Debugging, profiling and testing
* IDE construction
* Compiler construction

LDTA is a well-established workshop next to other conferences and
workshops on (programming) language engineering topics such as SLE and
GPCE. LDTA is traditionally a forum where computer science theories are
put to the test of real-world software engineering issues, for example
by applying:

* context-free grammars to parser generation for real programming languages,
* attribute grammars to static analyzer and compiler generation,
* term rewriting to source-to-source transformation,
* action semantics to programming language implementation,
* model checking to software verification.

Note that LDTA solicits submissions from any technological or
theoretical domain, as long as the paper is within the application
scope.

==Submission Procedure and Publication==

Submissions in the following categories are admissible:
* research papers,
* tool papers,
* experience papers

The final versions of accepted papers will probably(*) be published in
Electronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science (ENTCS), Elsevier
Science, and will be made available during the workshop. (*)Due to
organizational changes at Elsevier, publication by ENTCS publication
is provisional; another comparable venue will be found otherwise.

Each submission must:
* clearly and unambiguously state in which of the three categories it falls
* be original, i.e. not published or submitted elsewhere,
* contain a clear motivation,
* contain a thorough analysis of the claimed contributions (for
example by comparing to related work),
* be written in less than 15 pages (research papers and experience
reports), or less than 10 pages (tool papers)
* use the ENTCS style.

The authors of each submission are required to give a presentation at
LDTA 2009. The authors of the tool papers are required to include an
interactive demonstration in their presentations.

The authors of the best papers will be invited to write a journal
version of their paper which will be separately reviewed and, assuming
acceptance, be published in journal form. As in past years, this will
be done in a special issue devoted to LDTA 2009 of the journal Science
of Computer Programming (Elsevier Science).

The authors of the best tool papers will be invited to write a paper
and submit the source of code of their tool, which will both be
separately reviewed and, assuming acceptance, be published in the
special issue on Experimental Software and Toolkits (EST) of the
journal Science of Computer Programming (Elsevier Science).

Fechas importantes:

- Recepción de propuestas: 27 de Abril de 2009
- Notificación de aceptación: 12 de Junio de 2009
- Resumen para las actas: 24 de Junio de 2009

      Call for Papers (deadline: 15 January 2009)

TOOLS EUROPE 2009 will be devoted to the combination of technologies
that have emerged as a result of object technology becoming "mainstream".
Like its predecessors, TOOLS EUROPE 2009 combines an emphasis on quality
with a strong practical focus.

Started in 1989, TOOLS conferences, held in Europe, the USA, Australia,
China and Eastern Europe, have played a major role in the development of
object technology field; many of the seminal concepts were first presented
at TOOLS. After an interruption of four years, the conference was revived
in 2007 to reflect the maturing of the field and the new challenges ahead
and has become a yearly event.

Contributions are solicited on all aspects of object technology and
neighboring fields, in particular model-based development, component-
based development, and patterns (design, analysis and other applications);
more generally, any contribution addressing topics in advanced software
technology fall within the scope of TOOLS. Reflecting the practical
emphasis of TOOLS, contributions showcasing applications along with a sound
conceptual contribution are particularly welcome. For a non-exclusive list
of potential topic areas see the conference Web page.

All contributions will be subject to a rigorous selection process -
maximum acceptance rate of 25% - by the international Program Committee,
with a stress on originality, practicality and overall quality. The
proceedings should be published in Springer LNBIP. For detailed submission
information see the conference page.

                              Call for Papers

*Workshop Description*
Aspect-orientation is a rapidly advancing technology. New and powerful
aspect-oriented programming techniques are presented at many
international venues every year. However, it is not clear what features
of such techniques are 'common aspect-oriented concepts' and what
features are rather language-specific specialties. Research in
aspect-oriented modeling has the potential to help find such common
characteristics from a perspective that is at a more abstract level
(i.e., independent of any specific programming language).

The Aspect-Oriented Modeling (AOM) Workshop brings together researchers
and practitioners from two communities, aspect-oriented software
development (AOSD) and model-driven engineering. This workshop provides
a forum for presenting new ideas and discussing the state of research
and practice in modeling various kinds of crosscutting concerns at
different levels of abstraction. The goals of the workshop are to
identify and discuss the impacts of aspect-oriented technologies on
model engineering to provide aspect-oriented software developers with
general modeling means to express aspects and their crosscutting
relationships onto other software artifacts.

*Workshop Topics*
We are interested in submissions on all topics related to aspects and
model engineering including, but not limited to:

- Aspect-Oriented Modeling
  - defining essential characteristics of a crosscutting concern that
    need to be modeled;
  - verification and validation of aspect-oriented models;
  - composition of AOMs;
  - modeling of aspects at different stages of software development
    (requirements engineering, architecture, design, implementation);
  - application of AOM to modeling notations that are not tied to UML.
- Aspect-Oriented UML
  - identification of UML elements that can be used to model aspects;
  - identification of UML elements that can NOT be used to do so;
  - aspect-oriented support in UML;
  - extensions to UML for supporting AOSD.
- AOSD Method and Tool Support
  - aspect-oriented and model-based software development methods;
  - using existing UML tools in AOSD life-cycles;
  - new tools and extensions to existing tools to support AOM;
- Model-Oriented AOP and JPM
  - join point selection at model levels;
  - MOF, UML, MDA, etc. as a support to the JPM;
  - model based aspect evolution;
  - model weaving: from abstract to low-level;
  - model engineering tools for supporting aspect-oriented techniques;
  - model based aspect interference and composition management.

*Paper Submission*
Prospective participants are invited to submit 4-6 page position papers
following the ACM Format Guidelines
(http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html) to

          http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aom13

All submissions will be reviewed by members of the program committee for
quality and relevance. Submissions must be original; simultaneous
submissions to other venues are not allowed. Submitted papers must be in
PDF format. We aim to publish a second special issue on aspect-oriented
modeling with the Journal of Object Technology (JOT), which shall
collect the extended version of the best papers accepted to the recent
editions of the workshop.

Conference
----------

The 1st International Conference on Software Language Engineering (SLE)
is devoted to topics related to artificial languages in software
engineering. SLE is an international research forum that aims to bring
together
researchers and practitioners from both industry and academia to expand
the frontiers of software language engineering. Historically, SLE
emerged from two established workshop series: LDTA (Language
Descriptions, Tools, and Applications) which has been a satellite event
at ETAPS for the last 8 years, and ATEM which has been co-located with
MODELS and WCRE for the last 5 years. These, as well as several other
conferences and workshops, have investigated various aspects of language
design, implementation, and evolution but from different perspectives.
SLE's foremost mission is to encourage and organize communication between
communities that have traditionally looked at software languages from
different, more specialized, and yet complementary perspectives. SLE
emphasizes the fundamental notion of languages as opposed to any
realization in specific "technical spaces".

Scope
-----

The term "software language" comprises all sorts of artificial languages
used in software development including general purpose programming
languages, domain-specific languages, modeling and metamodeling
languages, data models, and ontologies. We use this term in its broadest
sense. Thus, for example, modeling languages include UML and UML-based
languages, synchronous languages used in safety critical applications,
business process modeling languages, and web application modeling
languages, to name a few. Perhaps less
obviously, the term "software language" also comprises APIs and
collections of design patterns that are indeed implicitly defined
languages.

Software language engineering is the application of a systematic,
disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, use, and
maintenance of these languages. Thus, the SLE conference is concerned
with all phases of the lifecycle of software languages; these include
the design, implementation, documentation, testing, deployment,
evolution, recovery, and retirement of languages. Of special interest
are tools, techniques, methods and formalisms that support these
activities. In particular, tools are often based on or even
automatically generated from a formal description of the language.
Hence, of special interest is the treatment of language
descriptions as software artifacts, akin to programs - while paying
attention to the special status of language descriptions, subject to
tailored engineering principles and methods for modularization,
refactoring,refinement, composition, versioning, co-evolution, and
analysis.

Call for Articles: IEEE Software Special Issue on
Domain-Specific Languages & Modeling
Submission Deadline: 1 Dec 2008

IEEE Software seeks submissions for a special issue on Domain-
Specific Languages and Modeling (DSL&M). This issue will focus on
benefits that the field's practitioners and designers observed
or quantified, especially scenarios that could not be implemented
easily using general-purpose techniques. The issue will explore how
mature domain-specific techniques address issues of efficiency,
integration, maintainability, and reliability. In addition,
articles can address specific challenges associated with DSL&M.
Suggested areas of interest include:

* software development process with DSLs;
* state of the art descriptions of DSLs and tools;
* industrial experiences of applying DSLs in practice, including
   lifecycle issues;
* design of DSLs as language engineering (guidelines, patterns,
   and frameworks);
* interoperability with mainstream languages, IDEs, and other tools;
* metrics for productivity using DSL and DSM techniques;
* testing, system confidence, test case generation, validation and
   verification;
* generative techniques, code reuse, code generation;
* semantics for integrating heterogeneous systems, or heterogeneous
   tools;
* selection/design of DSLs and tools to best suit project
   requirements; and
* impact of DSLs on software architecture.

Submissions can address many different vertical domains, including:

* automotive, avionics, embedded and other cyber-physical
   systems software;
* mobile systems, including mobile phones and sensor networks;
* telecom, communications, and software-defined radio systems;
* medical systems, devices and health records systems;
* consumer electronics;
* enterprise systems;
* software and systems integration; and
* hardware/software systems design and co-design.

Outstanding papers will provide empirical evidence, such as usage
statistics, metrics for productivity that can be compared to
general-purpose languages, code-generation statistics, or other
evidence that future practitioners may find useful in evaluating
a DSL/DSM approach during project planning. Articles that are
overly complex, center on pure research results, or are
theoretical in nature, are not appropriate for this issue.

Submitted papers should have a decidedly practical orientation,
and be written in a style appropriate for practitioners. Papers
should cover either:
(1) a case study example that is a system or software body already
     in production, or
(2) a large system or software body scheduled for delivery.

Authors of papers that do not satisfy either of the two criteria
above should contact the Guest Editors prior to submission.

Manuscripts must not exceed 5,400 word including figures and tables,
which count for 200 words each. Submissions in excess of these
limits may be rejected without review. Articles deemed appropriate
will be peer-reviewed and are subject to further editing for
magazine style, clarity, organization and space. We reserve the
right to edit the title of all submissions. Be sure to include the
name of the area(s) of interest to which your manuscript most
closely responds. To submit a manuscript, visit:
https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cs-ieee.

Please visit http://www.ece.arizona.edu/~sprinkle/dsl/ for direct
links to the submission site, author tips, and materials useful for
formatting submissions. Note that the scheduled Issue Publication
Date is Jul/Aug 2009.

OVERVIEW
-----------------------------

Disciplines like model transformation and domain specific languages
become essential in order to support different kinds of models in a model
driven environment. Understanding the role of ontologies in these fields is
crucial to leverage the development of such disciplines. We highlight the

ontologies, ontology languages and their corresponding reasoning technologies
be used fruitfully in Model Driven Engineering (MDE)? How can ontologies
improve designing domain specific languages?

Discussions about these and related questions will be supported by this
workshop. TWOMDE'08 aims at providing a forum for discussing the application of
different aspects of ontologies to enhance Model Driven Engineering.

The intended audience embraces members of the modeling community with

AIMS AND SCOPE
-----------------------------

Interest in integrating Ontologies and Software Engineering has gained more
attention with commercial and scientific initiatives, such as the OMG Ontology
Platform Special Interest Group (PSIG) and the W3C Software Engineering Task
Force (SETF).

Nevertheless, many questions come to light, as Model Driven Engineering (MDE)
spreads. Disciplines like model transformation and domain specific languages
become essential in order to support different kinds of models in a model
driven environment. Understanding the role of ontologies in these fields is
crucial to leverage the development of such disciplines. We highlight the
following open questions: How can the scientific and technical results around
ontologies, ontology languages and their corresponding reasoning technologies
be used fruitfully in Model Driven Engineering (MDE)? What is the role of
ontologies in supporting model transformation? How can ontologies improve
designing domain specific languages? Are current query languages able to query
both kinds of models?

Discussions about these and related questions will be supported by this
workshop. TWOMDE'08 aims at providing a forum for discussing the application of
different aspects of ontologies to enhance Model Driven Engineering.

The intended audience embraces members of the modeling community with
experience or interest in Model Driven Engineering and in Knowledge
Representation. Specifically, but not only, the participation of experts in

INVITED TALKS
-----------------------------

     * Andreas Friesen (SAP).
     * Phil Tetlow (IBM).

TOPICS OF INTEREST
-----------------------------

Topics of interest are but not exclusive:

     * RDF metamodel repository: interfaces and models to store, retrieve, query
     and manage MOF/Ecore metadata in RDF stores.

     * Metamodeling support of semantic structures: improvements on metamodeling
     facilities for representing richer real-world semantics, like OWL or OWL2.

     * Reasoning over MOF-based models using ontologies: verification and

***********************************************************

Web Engineering is a specific domain in which Model-Driven Software
Development (MDSD) can be successfully applied. Existing model-based Web
engineering approaches already provide excellent methods and tools for
the design and development of most kinds of Web applications. They
address different concerns using separate models (navigation,
presentation, workflows, etc.) and come with model compilers that
produce most of the application’s Web pages and logic based on these
models. However, most of these Web Engineering proposals do not fully
exploit all the potential benefits of MDSD, such as complete platform
independence, metamodeling, and model transformations.

Recently, the MDA initiative has introduced a new approach for
organizing the design of an application into different models so
portability, interoperability, and reusability can be obtained through
architectural separation of concerns. MDA covers a wide spectrum of
topics and issues (MOF-based metamodels, UML profiles, model
transformations, modeling languages and tools, etc.). In another camp,
Software Factories provide concepts and resources for the model-based
design of complex applications. At the same time, we see a trend towards
the incorporation of emerging technologies like the Semantic Web and
(Semantic) Web Rule Languages, which aim at fostering application
interoperability, especially with the advent of the Web 2.0 and its
related technologies and richer applications. However, the effective
integration of all these new techniques with the already existing
model-based Web Engineering approaches is still unresolved.

The main goal of the workshop is to provide a discussion forum where
researchers and practitioners on model-driven development of Web
applications can meet, disseminate and exchange ideas and problems,
identify some of the key issues related to these topics, and explore
together possible solutions and future works.

WORKSHOP TOPICS

Both academia and industry are invited to submit papers about any of the
following topics of interest:

* Model Driven Architecture (MDA) in the context of Web application
development

Hi everyone,
   I wonder if anyone one of you has tried developing transformations using IBM
Rational Software Architect (RSA) (ver 7.0.0). It is based on Eclipse providing
multiple packages for this purpose.
   I would like to transform my UML 2.0 "SourceModel" to a UML 2.0 "TargetModel"
that is completely a copy of the SourceModel only with some changes in
stereotypes. There are sequence diagrams,composite structures and
collaborations, etc. along with class and component diagrams in the
"SourceModel".
   The question is how to make a "COPY" of a whole model using eclipse or RSA
classes/methods. And is this way of processing models at all useful?
   I'll be thankful if you would help me for the most straightforward approach.
   Thanks in advance.
