Subject: Kiswahili learning materials for Sustainable Agriculture? Chat?
minciusodas
Send Email Send Email

I encourage us to write about our life dreams. What would we like to do
with our lives? What role would we like to play? How would we like to live?

Today I chatted with Josephat Ndibalema of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania who I
think has been key in the success of the Uyoga youth association.

"I dream to become a human rights advocate, and most of my activities
(creating wiki pages) at MinciuSodas is focusing on the subject. I
believe that right to education is an enabling right. And also believe
that most people, especially the poor, they easily learn and understand
when taught in their local language. I dream to promote Kiswahili
language use, not only in Tanzania but also in other countries in the
east and central africa. We can use Kiswahili wiki in swahili speaking
countries, to share ideas in Kiswahili language."

Joseph's interest prompted me to fix our Kiswahili wiki which now works
at http://www.worknets.org/sw/ and we're invited to help translate the
Open Knowledge Definition
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?OpenKnowledgeDefinition/Kiswahili

Joseph asks, May be it will be a good idea to share about Decide what
information should of priority when developing the *Kiswahili* wiki, we
can arrange some chat on this endeavour.

I found a note below from Patrick Bunyali Kamoyani about his Kiswahili
booklets on food security http://swahili.food-security.info

Samwel, would it be helpful to collect and/or create Kiswahili learning
materials about sustainable agriculture?

We could also try to publish such materials as JPG files or MPG movies
which could be watched (and read) on DVD players or mobile phones.
Ricardo and I are working on such a possibility
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?OnlineTextConverter Today I tried to
install ImageMagick on our server but I ran into a problem with a
dependency on a package.

Pamela, perhaps at your Thursday chat (13:00 London , 15:00 Nairobi
http://www.worknets.org/chat/) we could chat about our Dreams and
Endeavors and how we might link them as we work on them. And also I
would gladly train us all how to help with our Tasks
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Tasks and we can add more to that list,
whatever is helpful for us. I'm training us how to do these tasks, and
training the trainers, so that you can also be ready to join us the next
time we get paid work for our teams. If you help with our tasks, then
we'll help your dreams, too!

must say I am happy to learn of your great work and assistance. I am a
Kenyan and we have really experienced rough time the previous three
weeks after the results of a flawed election. At least there is some
calm where I come from (Maragoli) but neighbouring districts of Nandi
and Kisumu are still tense. I have now resumed my work, I translate
booklets on Agriculture and General foodsecurity. The documents are
freely downloadable from a website hosted by a friend in U.K. You may
visit it www.food-security.info or the swahili window
swahili.food-security.info Once more thank you for enabling me get
airtime for my phone when we really needed it. with kind regards,

Subject: Making learning material available in Kiswahili language- A rich Language in terms of Culture

Send Email Send Email

Dear all,
Yesterday i had a chat with Andrius about our endevour of  developing Kiswahili wiki -http://www..worknets.org/sw . It was in some respects one of the most inspiring chat for me because it is in sync with my own views that one of the best solution to reducing digital devide is translation of contents and learning materials into ndigineous languages like Kiswahili language.

As regards to translation, i have just started our first task of translating  the Open Knowledge Definition into Kiswahili- See http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?OpenKnowledgeDefinition.

This is done in order to promote kiswahili use in education especially among swahili speaking people.

Swahili language,is basically of Bantu(African) origin. It has borrowed words from other languages such as Arabic, probably as a result of the swahili people using the Quran written in Arabic for spiritual guidance as muslims.

As regards the formation of the swahili culture and language, some scholars attribute these phonomena to the intercourse of Africans and Asiatic people on the coast of East Africa. The word ''Swahili'' was used by the early Arabs visitors to the coast and it means "the coast". Ultimatelyit came to be applied to the people and the language.

Regarding the history of the swahili language, the older view is linked to the colonial time and asserts that the swahili language originates from Arab and Persians who moved to the East African coast. Given the fact that the only vocabulary can be associasted with the groups but syntax or grammar of the language is Bantu, this arguement has almost been forgotten. It is well known that any language that has to grow and expand its territories ought to absorb some vocabulary from other language in its way.

Languages borrow from each other all the time, just as other cultures do. We may think of them as being separate and different, but actually, just as people from different cultures, languages are connected and similar in many ways. Kiswahili language is rich in terms of culture and has a long history.

A suggestion has been made that swahili is an old language. The earliest known document recounting the past situation on the East African coast written in the 2nd century AD (in Greek language by anonymous author at Alexandria in Egypt and it is called the Periplus of  (Erythrean Sea) says that merchants visiting the East African coast at the time from Southern Arabia, used to speak with natives in their local language and they intermarried with them .Those who suggest that swahili is an old language point to this early source for the possible intiquity of the swahili language.

My last comment is that we need support from any who might be interested to join us and learn with us in Swahili language.Pleae visit the following link  http://www.worknets.org/sw

Andrius, i comment to hold a chat together with other interested members and share on how we can develop Kiswahili wiki content and design and also crarify our targets and intended objectives of the Kiswahili wiki, and how we might work together to promote this wiki, i proposal  a chat be conducted next week at any day it is when i will be available.

Thanks

Hi Josephat and Samwel

I want to congratulate you too Josephat on working to promote local languages. I think Samwel and I talked about it in chats a little, ages ago.

Local language versions of Wikipedia

I noticed that there's a Kiswahili version of Wikipedia. In theory, anyone can add articles too it, but in practice, it's usually university professors or people from large companies that add articles. Any contributor needs to meet the requirements that articles are...

True, accurate, impartial, written from a 'Neutral point of view', etc. These are very important, for topics like history, where different sides in a war have very different views about famous leaders, generals, etc, avoiding emotive terms like 'hero'.

Another important issue is 'Who owns the copyright of article, if it's a copy of an existing article from an encyclopedia, book, etc?'. Wikipedia authors can only post articles or large extracts with the original author/copyright-holder's permission.

You also need to add 'citations' to say where the information comes from. You can't just make an unproven statement in a Wikipedia article, like 'The battle of hastings was in 1066', without any sources.

(Kiswahili is the name of the language. It's a common lingua-franca in east africa)

Kiswahili has millions of speakers in East Africa, so you can see why it has a Wikipedia version already. I looked at Dholuo, the language of the Luo people in Samwel's area, but there is no Dholuo Wikipedia yet. That's a pity, as it would help local people. Once one person has started a  Wikipedia version, it can grow rapidly over time. The Wikipedia website has details of how to apply to start a new version in another language.

On the main Wikipedia home page, there's a link to 'Many other languages' (list of Wikipedia languages, with number of articles per language)...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias

This page is for 'Request for New Languages'. Maybe you know someone in Tanzania (Josephat) or Kenya (Samwel), who would be interested in starting Wikipedias for local languages.

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:Language_proposal_policy

Searching for local language pages

Another issue is 'How do you find web-pages in Kiswahili etc on the internet'. Web-pages are supposed to contain hidden information in the Header section of the HTML file, that tells browsers and search-engines what language the page is written in. A 2 character language code is used, such as 'en' English, 'fr' French and 'sw' Swahili.

In an ideal world, everyone who writes Kiswahili web-pages would correctly set the language to Swahili in their Web-Page Editor (Microsoft Frontpage, etc), and the hidden information would be saved in the file, identifying it to search-engines as Swahili/Kiswahili.

In practice, many authors don't know about this or don't care, and they leave the language set to 'en' English, even though the article is in Kiswahili. The page is wrongly identified to search-engines, so if you ask the search-engine to find Swahili/Kiswahili pages only, it doesn't find them.

So, if you create any Kiswahili web-pages, I suggest that you set the language correctly in the web-editor and teach other people to do that.

Some people have correctly set the language to Swahili/Kiswahili, so it's possible to use a search engine to search for words, and limit the results to Swahili/Kiswahili pages. However, you need a few tricks to make Google etc do that search.

If you wanted to search for the word 'Nairobi' and only return pages in Swahili, in theory, you should be able to go to Google, click on 'Advanced Search', enter 'Nairobi' as a search word, select '[Swahili' from a drop-down list of languages, then click Go. But, there's a problem. Swahili isn't in the list of languages

Ricardo. It only has major European languages like French, Spanish, etc, and Japanese, etc). So what I did is to enter 'Nairobi', select French and click Go. On the results page, I then went to the URL/Web-address and in 'lang_fr', replaced 'fr' for French with 'sw' for Swahili. That worked fine, and I got articles about Nairobi, written in Kiswahili (those pages set correctly to Kiswahili/Swahili language by the author).

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=nairobi&meta=lr%3Dlang_sw

If we search around, maybe there are other search-engines with longer lists of languages, including Swahili/Kiswahili.

To find any 2-letter language code, look up the language in the English Wikipedia, and a box on the right of the article has the 2-letter or 3-letter language code, 'sw', 'luo', etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiswahili

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dholuo

I hope this gives you and other people you know at least one way to find more local content on the web. I wish it was a bit easier.

Ricardo

Hujambo.

I was in the first lugha ya kiSwahili class taught at a US high
school. It was not in the curriculum, but we did have a professional
teacher.

I have been thinking for many years about how we can preserve more
than 6,000 languages. See ethnologue.org for further details on
documented languages.

That turns out not to be the case. Anybody with knowledge and interest
can and does add to Wikipedia or correct it. Schoolchildren can add
and edit articles with a little guidance. It makes for much better
homework than throwaway reports. At the beginninng, children can be
assigned to look up facts and sources, which they can put together as
a group. As their skills increase, they can be put to improving
articles on their own (with editorial review by a teacher or another
student), and then to writing and translating articles.

We can't actually require that about history, science, and many other
topic areas. The best we can do is to use the best available sources,
and refer readers to them for the details. Even a quotation from a
book or newspaper cannot be guaranteed to be the words of the speaker.

> impartial, written from a 'Neutral point of view', etc.

The discussions can get tangled, but the guidelines are clear. Opinion
should be reported as such, and agreed facts should be reported as
such. Where there is significant disagreement, it is proper to report
the claims and arguments of each side, with source references.

Articles or large extracts go in WikiSource (if you have permission),
not Wikipedia.

> You also need to add 'citations' to say where the information comes from.
> You can't just make an unproven statement in a Wikipedia article, like 'The

A better example would be "Jesus of Nazareth was born no later than
6-4 BC, according to most scholars."
Vermes, Géza (2006-11-02). The Nativity: History and Legend. Penguin
Books Ltd. p. 19. ISBN 0-14-102446-1.

See, for comparison,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_of_Jesus#Year_of_birth and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nativity_of_Jesus#Date_of_birth

Yes, you need to learn how to create references.<ref>Citing Sources on
Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources</ref>

It is quite unlikely that this spammer got Ken's password. It is
unfortunately extremely easy to lie to mail software about where

About uyoga,

Dear Sam,ricardo maria and Andrius and all friends.

I want to update you about us here in Tanzania.
Thank you Andrius for stressing on developing Kiswahili language.
Am very proud and happy to have Josephat within UYOGA.

Our current stuation,

Three weeks ago,UYOGA members met in a meeting and these were our sights.
-UYOGA is still under former management of Josephat,William,Helen and Ramadhani.
-The existing managerial team does not have enough time for full management of the organisation.
-Members sustainable activities.
-Organisation sustainability.

My advice was:

Sustainability & management.
We should all members unit and form several groups of related activities.
And these groups of common activities/endeavours should develop under UYOGA umbrellar support.

With the help of UYOGA identity these groups could access market support/funds,loans,legal identity approval, make advancement on their activities,Eg.our workshop activities.

I was very open that i will not grant much enough time to serve at an official level.
Thats means, we should all UYOGA leaders openly declare whether we have enought time for the organsation managements or not.Heads still docked down.
UYOGA has had leaders, but they dont have enough time to manage and develop it.BRING IN MORE PEOPLE.

As maria had adviced us,we need to seek management support from other good friends.
We pointed out Mr.Dan Ottedo from Kenya and Mrs.Elizabeth Wapalila.
So if we have these two people,we could learn of management from them

These people will train us on how to :

-Devolop personal leadership skills,
-Organizational and project management skills,

Planned work

-To aqure loan for the business iniatives.
-UYOGA has planned to start a stationaries related services as an income activity for organisation.
-we have found the site/building at the institute of social science, dar es salaam.
-We cant start offering services until the academic year begins in octobar/2009.
-Initial steps for the loans and business implementation are being taken care of by the exsting managent.

Our Challeges:

-We dont have a permanent office.
-Sustainability at both levels
-We need people with managerial skills to come and train UYOGAs.

Maria, have you discussed with Dan Ottedo? You mentioned that he aboit to come to Tanzania.
NB:Idont report i just share my current exeriences.

Ralf,
That's great news.
I've made a link to the ProWiki code that I'm using:
http://www.worknets.org/software/20090907wiki.txt
Please can you compare it with the DorfWiki version? and perhaps combine
them?

I would start a SourceForge project (perhaps called WorkNets) which
could include our ProWiki code and also additional scripts that I am
using and creating. What do you think?
Can we talk this week about next steps? What time?

I also looked at http://www.globalvillage.at Franz, that helps to
understand your vision. It would be good to coordinate regarding that, too.

Also, Ricardo and I are making good progress on the Online Text
Converter. It is working pretty well at
http://www.worknets.org/software/ebook/ It converts plain text into a
series of JPG images for view on a DVD player or other device. Josephat
Ndibalema is interested in publishing learning materials in Kiswahili
and others in Africa are interested, too. See also:
http:///www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?OnlineTextConverter It would be good
to think what kind of materials we should start to publish. Josephat,
is Thursday a good day to chat? Is 16:00 Kenya time possible? Ricardo,
Samwel, Tom, could you join us?

I'm also interested to get our "photo blogs" going quickly so that we
have streams of photos and captions from our different locations. I
have built an uploader http://www.worknets.org/software/addphoto.php
and you can see our photos http://www.ms.lt/?source=Photos so it's
mostly a matter of formatting them nicely per person.

I'm very glad that Edward Cherlin http://www.earthtreasury.org and Franz
Nahrada http://www.globalvillages.info are active at our subwikis. I
invite us to join me at our chat room http://www.worknets.org/chat/ and
train with me how to help Edward, Franz and others online. I'm
interested to build up our Help Room team with our Economy of Dreams
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Dreams and
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Tasks Please let me know what would
be helpful!

More thoughts or priorities?

Please do not send large attachments to this list. It is impolite, and
in any case they are stripped off, and we don't get them. Please
upload them somewhere, such as Flickr for photos, and send us the URL.

Ananya, Thank you for participating at Edward Cherlin's working group
Earth Treasury
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/earthtreasury/
and I'm very glad that you met George Christian Jeyaraj, he is one of
the first members of Minciu Sodas, more than 10 years now! He is a
Tamil from Sri Lanka but now in Lithuania. He speaks Lithuanian quite
well ("labai gerai")! George also knows some programming.

Perhaps you can help us? I invite you to join our chat this Thursday,
September 10 at 16:00 East African time and Lithuania time, 14:00 London
time, 6:00 California time. We'll be talking about our Online Text
Converter (please try it out with a Hindi text!)
http://www.worknets.org/software/ebook/ which creates JPG images that
can be viewed with a DVD player. And we'll be thinking how to publish
learning materials in local languages such as Kiswahli (but Indian
languages as well), all kinds of uses including business opportunities.
George and all, you can look at my program
http://www.worknets.org/software/ebook/source.php (look at the "page
source" with your browser.) Perhaps you can help with programming? or
other projects, see also: http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Tasks

Ananya and all, a great way to be included is to write any of our groups
about:
* your deepest value in life , which includes all of your other values
(examples at http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Values
* a question that you don't know the answer to, but wish to answer
* what would you like to achieve?
(examples at http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Endeavors
* your dream in life, what you would like to do with your life
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Dreams

And I've created a wiki page for you at:

How do you understand "global villages"?

Thank you, Ananya and George!

Hi Andrius

this is just to let you know I'll be at the Thursday 10th Sept Worknets chat, where we can chat about the Text Converter, etc.

If you haven't seen it already, could you look at...

"Text Converter way forward - Using epub as the input format"

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/learnhowtolearn/message/594

Here's a summary...

If we start with plain-text, then I think we will always be struggling to get the  output looking right.

I think we need to start with a format that identifies the various elements of a document (ordinary prose paragraphs or lists, etc). We can use a format based on XML, a Markup Language, with tags to identify the elements. The emerging standard for eBook distributon is epub, so that may be a good choice.  Authors/publishers create their eBooks in epub format or convert a word-processor document to epub. They send the eBook in a single file format, epub, to eBook distributor websites, like Amazon or eBook.com, instead of the old way of sending many different formats. The distributor website then uses converters to allow downloads in many eBook Reader formats (lit/pdf/pdb/txt/etc and epub itself).

Authors can submit eBooks to us in epub format. We don't care how different authors create their epub files. They may write and format an eBook in their favourite word-processor, then convert .doc/.odt/etc to .epub, using an existing converter program. Alternatively, they may use a word-processor/eBook authoring program that outputs epub directly.

For math books, you could use LyX as your word-processor, because of it's excellent formatting of math formulae, save the .TeX file and convert to epub using an existing converter program.

We would produce a converter to convert epub to JPEG files, for viewing on DVD Player+TV.

We wouldn't need to concern ourselves about other eBook Reader devices. People can use existing epub-to-<other eBook format> converters, for example epub-to-pdf/lit/pdb/txt/etc.

This is WHAT i propose we do. I haven't gone into HOW yet, but we should try to just use existing free open-source library functions or programs, rather than writing and maintaining a lot of code for years to come, and dealing with feature-requests. I'd like you to look at the message, which points to new epub sections on our Worknets page, and let me know what you think about this way forward.

An epub-to-JPEG converter could be generally useful, to other people/projects/devices, so we might publish it for anyone to use or adapt. For example, for owners or manufacturers of Digital Photo Frames or other devices that aren't intended to run programs.

Ricardo

Dear Graham,Andrius and Ricardo

Special thanks to Graham for being closer to William and Lugemwa as they show us their interest in DIY Solar Projects (microsolar prjects), William has been reporting to me about all you share with him about expanding the idea/principles of DIY Solar Technique to help the poor people in Tanzania who can't afford expensive solar systems, William is currently making trial with the sample unity you sent to him,,, is trying to charge mobile phone batteries using the sample module at his workshop and is also involving Kassim Kibwana who trains youth in Uyoga, Kassim is a college graduate with a diploma in electronics and he owns his own workshop he name it  ICT Devices Repair workshop he can repair computers, mobile phones, radios, dvds, printers and electronic devices and is well known in Dar es salaam due to  his field of electronics. He trained William Wambura and Juma  Mauwongo and with the help of our organisation  they have started their own workshop to provide mobile phone repair service to the community , they have basic repair tools to assist  them to perform tasks  at their workshop.

The workshop help them to build more skills, during the training course they were  they learn basic electronics, chip level skills in mobile phone repair ,our first first course focus was to provide  hardware skills, learning how to tackle mobile phone problems like network problems, speakers, mic, and replacement techniques. Now they can solve 10 to 12 problems associated with most mobile phones.

Also i would like to report to you Graham that Lugemwa Primson has received the sample unit you sent  him via Matangali Teachers college address in Mtwara region in the southern part of Tanzania approximately 10 to 12 hrs when traveling by bus from Dar es salaam, we ha a talk over the phone he told me that he was ''on trial'' trying the sample unit and he learnt that it is working properly, i talked to him over the phone , at the college they use fuel generator to generate electricity and the generator operates during the evening time from 3hrs from 19:30 and 21:30 eat, the college has computers and internet service but currently the computer server has some problems.

Lugemwa is studying to become a teacher, Lugemwa is striving to become a  primary school teaher  in Tanzania, he graduated high school in 2008 but he did not pass well is final exam, during high school he studies science subjects Physics,Chemistry and Biology (PCB), later in 2009 he decided to apply for a teaching course at Matangali Teachers College in Mtwara region in the southern part of Tanzania  where he is now. Lugemwa is interested in science subjects and he dreams to help children from poor families,to help them during their learning process. Aso has interests and skills in the electricity field he was impressed by the DIY Solar Techniques and decided to try out this idea.

Matangali Teachers College has a fuel generator to generate electricity for use at the college, Lugemwa is among supervisors of  the college's electrical worksop, their have duties are to monitor the electric service supply at the college, electrical wire installation, and other repair tasks, the workshop  six  students. During our talk he said that him and other students and teachers have formed an ICT Club. later is going to share this idea .

I will report to you about the progress, last i represent my request to Graham to send an extra sample unit to Lugemwa Primson, because is going to involve three students his fellows whm they are working together at the college's electrical workshop, he told me that they much interested with the idea after they saw  the free sample sent to him, they have planning to introduce the idea of DIY Solar to the cllege headmaster to see if they can work with us to expand the idea  hence benefit the local people.

However will not go further to include others until we try out this technology to see if can work properly

Hello Sam
I must congratulate for the efforts that you are making for this women group and just a suggestion that i would make to you on the group. Try Kenya Women Finance Trust and also the Women Enterprise Development Fund in the Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs. Their lending rates are better compared to what Krep would give you and they deal mostly with women.
Once the group is ready i could come over and offer Business and Entrepreneurial Skills to them before they start making wrong investment choices that will make it difficult for them to repay these loans.
Lets meet when you are in kisumu
Be well and bye for now

Ricardo,

First, Thank you! for great progress in the last few weeks. We've
really achieved a lot. We're close to making it easy to publish ebooks
for DVD players, mobile phones, etc.

I think now we want to know, What kinds of ebooks would be most useful
for our participants in Africa, India, and so on? That should dictate
how we focus our technological efforts.

Here are some opportunities:
* Josephat Ndibalema is championing Kiswahili, (see our wiki!
http://www.worknets.org/sw/ ) and in general, we can serve local and
regional languages.
* Graham Knight's Do-It-Yourself DIY Solar (solar panels for recharging
mobile phones) is a good example of a project that we could support with
ebooks in local languages, as are your many pages at
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Ricardo and Franz Nahrada also wants
us to engage participants at Thingiverse who might work together with
us, and we might try out their projects.
* Ananya Guha (India) has suggested children's books and that is also a
focus of Masimba Biriwasha (Zimbabwe). Indeed, it would be good for us
to collect, share and write children's stories and study them in terms
of the values that we and they are espousing. That's a great way to
research our own values, including our deepest values, and to create a
new culture, growing with children.
* Janet Feldman's guide for Blogging Positively and other such materials
are also great.

It's good to learn of the new EPUB standard for ebooks. However, it
seems that EPUB is just a way to package HTML pages. The HTML pages
need to be written "correctly", unambiguously as XHTML, and they are
organized with a side bar and zipped together. But otherwise there
doesn't seem to be any constraint on them. Indeed, they can even
include CSS stylesheets. So writing an EPUB converter is comparable to
writing an HTML browser (and one that will look nice on all kinds of
screens). That's outside of my resources. As you note, there are sites
like http://feedbooks.com that are doing this automatically, converting
EPUB into all kinds of formats. Indeed, http://feedbooks.com is
wonderful for us - not only do they publish classics in the Public
Domain, but they also require new authors to publish in the Public
Domain! And they are attracting authors!

Similarly, creating a PDF browser or PDF parser is unrealistic and
unecessary for us.

Instead, we already have a converter that works. And improving it a bit
will make it work quite well. What we're achieving is our own format, a
very simple way to organize text into paragraphs, without any line
breaks, and some assumptions as to what will happen when paragraphs are
just a line or two (they will be listed on the same screen), and when
they are longer than that (they will get their own screen). We don't
need any use of italics, bold, font size, page display or anything else,
for our purposes, as far as I know. Instead, we have a real need to
intersperse (and perhaps to overlay) photos, audio, video, diagrams.
Our texts will determine our needs. We need texts!

This is like the difference between websites and emails. We use emails
(typically, plain text) for most of our activity and that is why we are
so inclusive. Whereas much of the world's activity is oriented around
websites. Our strength is in activity where we can minimize the
importance of layout and focus on content. We're coming up with that
kind of ebook and others may not.

Some steps we could take:
* Choose texts that one or more of our participants want.
* Translate them to local languages as needed.
* Hand craft some custom made ebooks - improve our tools accordingly.
* Develop our own format for "Electric Books" (or however we call it).
* Ask http://feedbooks.com to convert ePub to our format (and from
there, possibly, to various output devices format)
* Ask somebody else to convert PDF to our format.

Then, we can build and encourage custom converters that take assorted
text (like email archives) and strip out the paragraphs, which is to
say, convert them to our format. We can also encourage people to write
ePub books or PDF books, yet still, they will get better results if they
simply output the text.

I think we're having very good success with our own "formatless" format
and that is something we can build on. The value of our format is that
it is maximally flexible, it can be satisfactory on all devices, and it
allows for maximally rapid publishing (especially relevant if we add
photos, audio and video).

Much to discuss tomorrow!

Thank you, Ricardo and all,

Andrius

What groups might we share this letter with? It's an invitation to
chat, but also, an invitation to work together and have "liaisons" to
link our various groups and help us know how we might work together.
What groups might we link up with? Who might like to be a liaison?
Andrius, ms@...
-----------------------------------

I invite us all to our chat room http://www.worknets.org/chat/ on
Thursday, September 10, at 16:00 Kenya time, 14:00 London, 9:00 New
York. We'll chat about publishing ebooks in local and regional languages
(like Kiswahili, Hindi, Lithuanian, Luo) that can be read (as JPG
images) with DVD players, mobile phones, digital picture frames, ebook
readers, etc.

We'd love to work together with other communities. Many of our
endeavors are converging:
* Ricardo (UK) has written many helpful pages about making the most of
marginal Internet access, as in Africa:
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Ricardo
* He suggested that we convert text to JPG images so they could be read
on DVD players, mobile phones, etc.
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?OnlineTextConverter
* I implemented this: http://www.worknets.org/software/ebook/  You can
enter a text and it will output a zipped file with JPG images,
typically, one per paragraph.
* Josephat Ndibalema (Tanzania) is championing the creation of learning
materials in Kiswahili (see our wiki http://www.worknets.org/sw/ )
* Graham Knight (UK) promotes DIY Solar, small do-it-yourself solar
panels for recharging mobile phones, and we could create related ebooks.
http://biodesign.webeden.co.uk
* Franz Nahrada (Austria) wants us to engage the participants of
http://www.thingiverse.com (sharing "digital designs for physical
objects") to work together on real-life challenges and we agreed (with
Ralf Schlatterbeck (Austria)) that this will be the first "semantic"
project for our Worknets Interface Architecture Committee.
* Janet Feldman's (USA) Rising Voices guide for Blogging Positively and
other such materials are also great.
http://rising.globalvoicesonline.org/guides/

As you see, we need help:
* Learning what content might be relevant to publish.
* Strategizing the publishing path (which might include converting EPUB
and PDF files, using Public Domain resources like books
http://www.gutenberg.org , http://www.feedbooks.com , audio books
http://www.librivox.org ) and even interweaving (much like a slide show)
text, photos, audio, video.
* Creating software for conversion and for making publishing easy with
good results.
* Exploring hardware options and even hacking new ones.
* Translating materials.
* Organizing publishing and distribution networks.
* Building contacts and developing business opportunities.

We'd also like to learn about any endeavors you may have that we might
work together on
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Endeavors
as well as your "deepest value in life" and "questions that you don't
know the answer to, but wish to answer"
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Values
and "what would you like to do with your life"?
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Dreams
and "how can we help"?
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Tasks

Worknets is a culture for independent thinkers, that is, for focusing on
those who are able to work even by themselves, are willing to give and
share in the Public Domain, and so with our help might remake all of our
world, so that what we believe is what happens.

In 1998, I founded Minciu Sodas http://www.ms.lt as a business (and
haven) for serving and organizing independent thinkers. I'm taking the
lead to organize Worknets as a broader culture and network based on
minimum requirements for maximum sharing
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Charter

Our endeavor above is a good occassion to seek liaisons with a wide
variety of groups such as Rising Voices, Yi-Tan, Learning Communities,
Ugabytes, Super Happy Dev Club and many others.
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Liaisons
I hope we might find people who could build bridges amongst groups,
summarize what people are working on in a group, and share endeavors
from other groups. Such summaries and related exchanges would be
assumed to be in the Public Domain, for participating groups. I am
actively looking for liaisons and also for modest stipends for their help.

I prefaced my letter with "Mornflake outreach" because this summer such
outreach was made possible by work we did for Leon Benjamin
http://www.winningbysharing.net on behalf of Mornflake cereal
http://www.mornflake.com and their online video contest
http://www.mornflakecompetition.com Leon paid us to engage online
communities and agreed that we focus on reaching out to them and
supporting their endeavors, and credit Mornflake for their support,
rather than promote Mornflake cereal directly. The groups that tolerate
us are those with whom we can effectively build such a network. Leon
and I think that we can find more such clients to support our outreach,
and we can share this work as well. I thus appreciate your
understanding and support (and Mornflake's, too).
http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?MornflakeOutreach

Please share your thoughts, how might we help each other, and what
groups would like us to reach out to them?

Thank you!

Hi Sasha
thanks. That's a useful list of money transfer services.

You mentioned you can't use Paypal where you are, in Serbia. I checked the
Paypal Worldwide page, which lists which countries can use Paypal and whether
they can sed-and-receive money or just send money.

Serbia still isn't listed, so you can't use Paypal at all at the moment. I check
the page every few months, to look for changes, so I'll let you know if Serbia
is added. I see that 2 of the former Yugoslav states are listed; Croatia and
Bosnia-Herzegovina, so that's a hopeful sign that Serbia may be listed one day.

DEar FRed,

I am well behind the ongoings, i don't watch television much and quite busy.
Chris informed me yesterday about the sad happenings in Uganda.
I really feel it and reminds me of the unfortunate violence that rocked Kenya.
We are together with you in Prayers, please be safe.
Let us know how we can help you here in Italy.
The Kenyan community here in Lecce are equally saddened by what is happening to our brothers and Sisters in Uganda.
