You have a right to your opinion. If you are anti-commercial collecting then
that is your priveledge, but don't begin to threaten me about legal issues. I
deal with you people all day long in palaeontology, so I know your kind.
As in paleontology, you believe that every artifact belongs in a museum. I
agree with you to a certain point. I do my fair share (if not MORE) of
donations to museums, discounted prices, etc. But, the fact is, museums have
very little money, and are usually VERY slow to pay. Commercial dealers cannot
always afford to donate specimens to museums, discount prices or wait YEARS (at
times) to be paid.
Let me ask you this? Who are you to tell me that what I am doing, what I am
selling, is not legal? Who are you? Another academic who dislikes the fact
that we live in a free market economy, and that everything has a price to
someone? Who are you to tell me that I am breaking the law by selling an item
that I have a FEDERAL EXPORT permit for? Does your opinion somehow supercede
that of a government who issued PERMISSION for me to sell an item?
Luckily my actions are also PERMITTED in a great many cases. Also, even though
it is NONE of your business, I do my best to find benefactors willing to buy
pieces SPECIFICALLY for donation to museums or researchers. That is more than
others I know do.
Why don't you put your money where your mouth is? I will sell you some
fantastic, legal artifacts at a VERY good price, and you can turn around and
donate them to whatever museum you like. OK?
That would be great, but somehow I doubt that I will ever be taken up on my
offer. Instead, you will no doubt email me back with more threats about what I
am doing (which you know very little about as far as what I sell or who I sell
it to) and how I am breaking the law.
The world DOES NOT BELONG TO SCIENCE OR THE GOVERNMENT. Important items should
be provided to scientific researchers for study, but until there are laws to
FORCE people to do this, I and others will sell what we are legally allowed to
sell, and some of us will even donate items when we are able to. Believe what
you want, but there are more scrapers and stone tools destroyed by construction
every year that are sold in the open market.
Your issue, just like in palaeontology, is not that the items are being sold and
"lost" to science, but that someone is making some money on it.
How many references from academics would you like to prove just how ethical and
law abiding I am?
As I said, you are entitled to your one sided beliefs and opinions about the
evils of commercial collecting.
It's funny how I still run into people like you......you are still out there,
which is unfortunate. I am lucky enough to be able to deal with academics who
understand that working WITH commercial collectors instead of AGAINST them is a
lot better for them in the long term. As a result, the people I work with reap
the benefits of commercial collecting while still being an academic by
profession. Your attitude does absolutely NOTHING but cause people grief and
make them not want to deal with people like you at all......
You get more flies with honey........

Please stop selling our European Heritage!
Mesolithic tools and other prehistoric artifacts should be placed in museums
or donated to researchers, not sold to private persons.
Luckily your actions are forbidden in many developed European countries,
with heavy penalties, so be warned!

Hello
I just joined this discussion group, so I am not sure if commercial postings
are permitted or not. My partner and I are lucky enough to be able to offer
for sale some artifacts from the collection of a very good friend of mine.
Essentially, his collection is comprised of artifacts dating back 2.3
million years (stone tools, obviously) right up until about the bronze age,
and a few things beyond that. Any items of signifigance will come with
legal export documents. His collection, perhaps one of the finest
collections of tools and paleolithic art in the world, contains items from
all types of African and European cultures, as well as some Egyptian,
Chinese, and Roman items. If you have any interest in any of these items,
please contact me. Prices range from about $100 up to more than $100,000.
We are currently in the process of setting up a website. So, until then, if
anyone is interested in QUALITY items, please contact me offlist.
Thanks!
Michael
