Re: [metaphorical] "Event Loops, XSLT, and XForms" and SVG   Message List

Rex,

Congrats to Len. As to the z-axis for SVG, I've got some really grave
misgivings about that. Don't get me wrong -- I'd love to be able to extend
SVG into three dimensions, but that kind of change will have a radical
effect upon the language. Transformation matrices would need to be extended
to be four dimensions, five if, as I think necessary, we want to explore
non-affine transformations. Fills become more complex, since you are now
talking about volume fills vs. surface fills. Do clip-paths become
clip-regions? In other words, its certainly doable, but it holds a whole
host of related issues that pop up.

I think what may be better would be for the Web 3D consortium, when they
propose X3D into the W3C, to view it as a first pass towards a full
reconciliation between SVG and X3D. You can essentially define a surface
within an X3D that acts as the rendering canvas for an SVG graphic. X3D2 and
SVG agree upon a common set of XML Events, with X3D2 essentially adopting
the SMIL architecture. The RAX story with SVG 1.2 also needs to be resolved,
and this is one area where the two could very definitely share a common code
module.

Just my two cents worth.

-- Kurt

Len would know more about who is interested in this here animal. I know exactly zilch about it. I think X3D is fine, and just needs better browsers--and more ...
