Hullo
Apologies to those who are conferenced out at the moment.
As you may be aware next July the Australian Meteorological
and Oceanographic Society is planning to
host a conference in Brisbane. The conference "theme" will
be storms* and they have invited the NZ Meteorological
Society be a co-host. (We have accepted.)
* This doesn't mean that talks on other topics won't be
accepted.
Anyway, A planning meeting for next years AMOS
conference is being held next week in Melbourne (April 8).
We have been asked to provide ideas for this meeting. I
will email our input (if we have any) next monday to Rex
Falls one of the organisers. So if you have any ideas get
back to me before next monday.
Perhaps you may have ideas as to who might be good to
get as an invited speaker; are there any special topics you
might want a session dedicated to; what meteorological/
oceanographic issues are of concern to both countries;
are there any field trips that may be of scientific interest
in the area?
Normally the Australian attendance is about 120
and the organisers would be aiming for about 150-160 for
this meeting. So it does offer a chance for a much bigger
audience than for a typical NZ Met. Soc. meeting.
Thanks
Richard Turner
President , Meteorological Society.

For your guidance below is an outline of the current vision
statement of the meeting.
It is intended that the scope of the meeting include the following:
Storms of the global atmosphere/hydrosphere on all
scales; including thunderstorms, tropical cyclones,
hybrid and extra tropical storms;
meteorologyand physical oceanography of storms,
including their description, dynamics, forecasting,
storm surges and waves, climatology and climate
change aspects;
storm hydrology including rainfall, runoff and flooding;
impactsof storms including risk assessment and
responses.
The format of the meeting has yet to be decided, but is currently
envisaged to include invited keynote and review presentations, a
much larger number of papers supported by extended abstracts,
and with the participation of other relevant organisations, a small
number of working groups exploring multi-disciplinary and end user
requirements. However the format is still very fluid and dependent
on discussions with supporting organisation.
