CLIMATE MAPPING by Dr. Andrew Tait (NIWA, Wellington)
Auckland Met Soc members are invited to a free seminar on NIWA's climate
mapping, on Friday 9th July, from 12.30pm at NIWA Auckland
(269 Khyber Pass Road, Newmarket - in the 369 Meeting room).
NIWA can map any aspect of New Zealand's climate. We build our maps
using data from the extensive national climate database, satellite data,
and output from global-scale and local-scale climate models. Current
uses of maps provided by NIWA ranges from identifying land suitable for
growing grapes, olives, and peas to tourism advertising to analysing
rodent habitats.
This public seminar will show examples of the types of maps we can
produce, hoighlight the potential applications for the maps and
Geographic Informatoion Systems (GIS) data layers. And will promote
NIWA's new climate mapping service. This is an excellent opportunity
for users of climate data or maps to talk with us directly.
Dr. Tait is a climate scientist with NIWA in Wellington. He is involved
in a number of projects in which spatially-disturbed estimates of
climate data are required (for example, the Kaipara and Far North
climate/soil/crop potential mapping project). His PhD from the
University of Colorado, Boulder, USA , was on snow modelling using
satellite data, and his Masters and undergraduate degrees in
Geopgraphy(Cliatology) are from the University of Otago.
This informal talk should be less than 1 hour in duration, and is an
excellent opportunity for users of climate data and mapping to see what
is possible, and to talk directly with us.
Please send RSVPs to g.griffiths@... by Friday 2 July.
