A Million-Selling Cowboy Tune For Patsy Montana & The Prairie Ramblers

Patsy Montana Was Elected Into The Country Music Hall Of Fame In
1996, The Year She Passed Away
Her Real Name Was Rubye Blevins

Bob made this MIDI by scanning the sheet music and converting to MIDI
using the program MIDISCAN, MUSITEK, Ojai, California.

You have probably seen that inside many MIDI files and thought that they
programmed the MIDI, however it is just a program and apparently did not
have a place in the program where the sequencer, scanner could put their
credentials.

Some sequencers after using the program to scan a piece of sheet music
would then edit the MIDI using another sequencing program and then
insert their credentials.

For our guitar playing members, this may be useful?  At least it's free!

Midi Tab Player is guitar player's companion software that loads Midi files, displays the finger positions while playing the guitar sound and the accompaniment. It offers convenient practice features such as tempo change, step play, loop practice and sound mute. Midi Tab Player finds the optimal fingering positions using Axontone(TM) a sophisticated transcription algorithm. The free Fan version displays a brief advertisement screen.

The Chantay's - Pipeline (Lawrence Welk Show 5/18/63)

"Pipeline" is a surf rock song by The Chantays. It was also recorded by Johnny Thunders, Hank Marvin, Agent Orange, The Ventures, The Challengers, Anthrax, and Dick Dale with the help of Stevie Ray Vaughan. It was also covered by Hot Butter on their 1973 album, More Hot Butter, and erstwhile-Beach Boy Bruce Johnston cut a disco version in 1977.

The original release was on Downey 104-B, and was picked up for nationwide distribution by Dot Records, which released it as Dot 16440-B. (The ostensible A-side, "Move It", never went anyplace, making this an example of a "flipped disc".) For some reason, all 45-rpm releases showed the band name as "Chantay's", with the so-called greengrocer's apostrophe.

The song, originally called "Liberty's Whip," was renamed after the band members saw the Bruce Brown film entitled "Endless Summer", a groundbreaking documentary film of two california natives circling the globe in search of the perfect wave. The term "pipeline" refers to a phenomenon in surfing in which the crest of the wave on which a surfer is riding goes completely over his head and lands in front of him, leaving him in the center of what, from his viewpoint, looks like a pipe made of water. The song, fitting in with the popular surfing craze of the time, swiftly rose up the Billboard Pop charts, reaching #4, and becoming a classic hit of its time.

Although they had a myriad of surf tunes, "Pipeline" was the Chantays' only hit single, and is considered one of the landmarks of the surf genre. The track's distinctive sound was in large part due to the mix being "upside down", in that the bass and rhythm guitars were at the forefront, while the lead guitar, piano and drums were buried. Although the 45 was released only in monaural, the track was recorded in wide stereo, with the rhythm guitar hard left, the bass and drums hard right, and the piano and lead guitar centered. Modern reissues, beginning with the 1984 MCA Records 7" single, are stereophonic.

In November, 1997, the Chantays recorded a new acoustic version of the song, titled "Pipeline Unplugged", which was released on their album "Waiting For The Tide".

The song was previously used as background music for BBC Match of the Day "Goal of the Month" competition.

A live cover version of "Pipeline", performed by Johnny Thunders, plays over the closing credits to TV-series The Sopranos episode 74, entitled "The Ride".

MASON WILLIAMS CLASSICAL GAS

"Classical Gas" is an instrumental piece written by Mason Williams. The title of the song was originally "Classical Gasoline" but was changed to "Classical Gas" by the music copyist. On the original recording, Williams plays guitar and is accompanied by an orchestral backing. It was released in February 1968 from the album The Mason Williams Phonograph Record. In August 1968 it reached Number 2 on the American charts and went on to sell over a million copies (the song also topped the Billboard Easy Listening survey). Williams re-recorded the tune as a solo guitar piece on his 1970 album Hand Made. He also recorded a version with Mannheim Steamroller in 1987.

The composer, Mason Williams, was the head writer for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour at the time of the piece's release. It saw its television premiere on the show and Williams performed it several times over several editions. After the piece had reached the Top Ten, Williams asked an experimental filmmaker named Dan McLaughlin to create a video montage of classical art works edited in time to the music, using a visual effect now known as kinestasis. The pioneering work, "3000 Years of Art", premiered in the summer of 1968 and may have helped push the song high on the charts.

Instrumental Only.

Neil Diamond - Thank The Lord For the Night Time (Live 1969)
(Video is stills, and those aren't even very good, but the music is there, and rocks.)

Neil Leslie Diamond (link id discography) (born January 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter and occasional actor.

Neil Diamond is one of pop music's most enduring and successful singer-songwriters. As a successful pop music performer, Diamond scored a number of hits worldwide in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Critic William Ruhlmann wrote of Diamond, "As of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart." As of May 2005 Diamond had sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.

Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.

Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, and in 2000 received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award.

This song is performed by Neil Diamond and appears on the album Just For You (1967).

Lyrics:

Daytime turns me off, and I don't mean maybe
Nine-to-five ain't taking me where I'm bound
When it's done, I run out to see my baby
We get groovin' when the sun goes down

I thank the Lord for the night time
To forget the day
A day of up-, uptight time
Baby, chase it away
I get relaxation
It's a time to groove
I thank the Lord for the night time
I thank the Lord for you

I'll talk about plans now, baby, I got plenty
Nothing ever seems turn out the way it should
Talk about money, girl, I ain't got any
Seems like just one time I'm feelin' good

I thank the Lord for the night time
To forget the day
A day of up-, uptight time
Baby, chase it away
I get relaxation
It's a time to groove
I thank the Lord for the night time
I thank the Lord for you

Dean Martin - Ain't That A Kick In The Head (from the original "Oceans Eleven")

Dean Martin (born Dino Paul Crocetti; June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995) was an American singer, film actor, television personality and comedian. He was one of the most well known musical artists of the 1950s and 1960s. Martin's hit singles included the songs "Memories Are Made Of This", "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody", "Mambo Italiano", "Sway", "Volare" and "Ain't That A Kick In The Head?" One of the organizers of "The Rat Pack," he was a major star in four areas of show business: concert stage, recordings, motion pictures, and television.

Ain't That a Kick in the Head? is a song which was written in 1960 with music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Sammy Cahn. It was first recorded on May 10, 1960 by Dean Martin, with conducting by Nelson Riddle. Dean performed the song in Ocean's Eleven in an alternate arrangement featuring vibraphonist Red Norvo and his quartet.

In 2007, the song appeared in Meter Made, an episode of the FOX animated sitcom, American Dad.

The song has been recorded by many performers, including Robbie Williams, Westlife, Ray Quinn, and Hazell Dean. It also appeared in the soundtrack to the Ocean's Thirteen. It was also used as the soundtrack to a commercial for Budweiser, which was broadcast during Super Bowl XLI.

Lyrics:

How lucky can one guy be?
I kissed her and she kissed me
Like the fella once said,
"ain't that a kick in the head?"
The room was completely black,
I hugged her and she hugged back
Like the sailor said, quote,
"ain't that a hole in the boat?"

My head keeps spinnin',
I go to sleep and keep grinnin'
If this is just the beginnin',
My life is gonna be bee-yoo-tee-ful

I've sunshine enough to spread,
It's just like the fella said
Tell me quick, ain't love a kick in the head?

Like the fella once said,
"ain't that a kick in the head?"
Like the sailor said, quote,
"ain't that a hole in the boat?"

My head keeps spinnin',
I go to sleep and keep grinnin'
If this is just the beginnin',
My life is gonna be bee-yoo-tee-ful

She's tellin' me we'll be wed,
She's picked out a king-size bed
I couldn't feel any better or i'd be sick
Tell me quick oh, ain't love a kick?
Tell me quick ain't love a kick in the head?

Phil Collins - Against All Odds
EXCELLENT Video

"Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" is a song originally written and recorded by British singer Phil Collins. The song was the main theme for the 1984 film of the same name, and first appeared on its soundtrack. It is a ballad in which its protagonist implores his/her ex-lover to "take a look at me now", knowing that reconciliation is "against all odds" but worth a try. It has been covered by several artists.

This song is on the video game Karaoke Revolution Volume 3. It is also downloadable content for the game Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore.

Philip David Charles Collins, RVO (born 30 January 1951 Chiswick, London) is an English singer-songwriter, drummer, keyboardist and actor best known as the lead singer and drummer of English progressive rock group Genesis and as a Grammy and Academy Award-winning solo artist. He has also appeared in several films.

Collins sang the lead vocals on eight American chart-toppers between 1984 and 1989; seven as a solo artist and one with Genesis. His singles, often dealing with lost love, ranged from the drum-heavy "In the Air Tonight", to the dance pop of "Sussudio", to the political statements of his most successful song, "Another Day In Paradise". His international popularity transformed Genesis from a progressive rock group to a regular on the pop charts and an early MTV mainstay.

Collins' professional career began as a drummer, first with obscure rock group Flaming Youth and then more famously with Genesis. In Genesis, Collins originally supplied backing vocals for front man Peter Gabriel, singing lead on only two songs: "For Absent Friends" from 1971's Nursery Cryme album and "More Fool Me" from Selling England by the Pound, which was released in 1973. On Gabriel's departure in 1975, Collins became the group's lead singer. As the decade closed, Genesis's first international hit, "Follow You, Follow Me", demonstrated a drastic change from the band's early years. His concurrent solo career, heavily influenced by his personal life, brought both him and Genesis commercial success. According to Atlantic Records, Collins' total worldwide sales as a solo artist, as of 2002, were 150 million.

Lyrics:

How can I just let you walk away,
just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all

How can you just walk away from me,
when all I can do is watch you leave
Cos we've shared the laughter and the pain,
and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now,
'cos there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me,
just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now,
'cos there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me
is against all odds and that's what I've got to face

I wish I could just make you turn around,
turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you,
so many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now,
'cos there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me,
just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now,
'cos there's just an empty space
But to wait for you,
well that's all I can do and that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now,
'cos I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
That's the chance I've got to take, oh, oho

Just take a look at me now

Excellent!! Chris just does backing tracks, so sing away!

Leo Sayer (born Gerard Hugh Sayer, 21 May 1948, Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex) is an English singer-songwriter and musician, now based in Australia, whose singing career has spanned four decades.

Sayer has had success worldwide with his single and album releases, particularly in the UK and the U.S. He was initially discovered by David Courtney, who co-managed him with the singer-turned-manager, Adam Faith. Sayer began his music career co-writing songs with David Courtney, including "Giving It All Away," which gave Roger Daltrey of The Who his first hit as a soloist in 1973.

That same year, Sayer began his career as a recording artist. At the time of his initial chart breakthrough in Britain, with his debut hit "The Show Must Go On," he wore a pierrot style outfit and make-up.

He had subsequent single hits with "One Man Band" (1974), "Long Tall Glasses" (1975) and "Moonlighting" (1975).

In 1976, Sayer released three Beatles songs, "I Am the Walrus", "Let It Be" and "The Long and Winding Road" in the movie All This and World War II.

In 1977, he had a US number one with "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" (a U.S. Grammy Award winner for the year's best Rhythm and Blues Song), as well as the romantic ballad, "When I Need You" (1977), which reached number one in both the UK and U.S. Sayer also had remakes of Bobby Vee's Sonny Curtis/Jerry Allison composition, "More Than I Can Say" (his fourth UK number 2 hit, and in the U.S., number 2 pop and number one in the adult contemporary chart), and Buddy Holly's "Raining In My Heart" (1979) and "Orchard Road" in 1983. In the U.S., three of his singles - "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" (1977), "When I Need You," (1977) and "More Than I Can Say" (1980) - were certified gold.

Sayer made an appearance on The Muppet Show during the third season (second show) on which he sang "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing," "The Show Must Go On," and "When I Need You."

He also provided songs for the soundtrack for the English language version of the French-Belgian animated film, The Missing Link (1980).Template:Http://www.cinemovies.fr/fiche cast.php?IDfilm=5408

In 1990, he contributed to the last recording studio collaboration between Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson, Woolfson's solo album Freudiana, performing "I Am A Mirror".

In 2000, "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" was featured in the hit film, Charlie's Angels, and was on the accompanying soundtrack album.

Sayer's debut UK hit, "The Show Must Go On," was covered by Three Dog Night for the U.S. market and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1974. Phil Collins covered Sayer's Billy Nichols' song "I Can't Stop Loving You" (originally a U.K. No.6 hit for Sayer) for his 2002 album, Testify. It reached number one on the U.S. adult contemporary chart.

In 2005, Sayer moved to Sydney, Australia, where he remains based to this day. On 12 February 2006, made a surprise return to number one in the UK Singles Chart, with Meck's remix of "Thunder In My Heart." He has also appeared in the Australian comedy, Stupid, Stupid Man.

Leo Sayer: At His Very Best, a career spanning compilation album, was released in the UK on 6 March 2006. It exclusively features the Meck single, alongside Sayer classics such as, "When I Need You" and "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing".

Celebrity Big Brother 5

In 2007, Sayer was the fifth person to join the Celebrity Big Brother UK house at the start of the series.

Sayer walked out of the Big Brother house on 12 January ostensibly because he was refused a supply of fresh underwear.

1967 hotel fire

In January 1967, while Sayer was working as a hall porter at the King's Hotel in Hove, he assisted in the rescue of guests from a fire that damaged the first floor of the hotel. He was rescued by builders working on a block of flats beside the hotel.

Wiggles Guest Appearance

Sayer made a guest appearance on The Wiggles 2008 DVD, "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing". The DVD features the Sayer musical hit of the same name.

2008

In 2008 Sayer released a new album in Australia, "Don't Wait Until Tomorrow". This album, produced by Garth Porter (from Australian Pop Band Sherbet), and released by Universal Music Australia, features selections from his catalogue in an entirely new setting, re-arranged with strings and acoustic and jazz instrumentation.

Recordings

"Moon River" was released by South African singer Danny Williams, and reached the UK number one. Shortly thereafter, Andy Williams recorded the song and made it his theme song. It was a hit for Jerry Butler in 1961, reaching number 11 in the Billboard charts. Other artists that have covered the song are The Afghan Whigs, Benny Anderssons Orkester, Paul Anka, Blake, Louis Armstrong, Vince Guaraldi, Beru Revue, Mary Black, Sarah Brightman, Liz Callaway, Perry Como, Ray Conniff, Bobby Darin, Ania Dąbrowska, Dr. John, Billy Eckstine, The Four Freshmen, Connie Francis, Bill Frisell (instrumental), Emi Fujita, Judy Garland, Karel Gott, Grant Green (instrumental), Patty Griffin, The Innocence Mission (although this version is sometimes incorrectly cited as being performed by Milla Jovovich), Bradley Joseph (instrumental), Kim Yoo-jin, James Last, Joey McIntyre, Johnny Mathis, Brad Mehldau, Jane Monheit, Morrissey, Patsy Ann Noble, Jim Reeves, John Barrowman, R.E.M., Mia Riddle, Andrea Ross, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Sarah Vaughan, Nan Vernon, Kid Koala, Westlife, Victoria Williams, and Tata Young.

Mercer himself recorded the song in 1974 for his album (appropriately named) My Huckleberry Friend.

"Moon River" is a song composed by Johnny Mercer (lyrics) and Henry Mancini (music) in 1961, for whom it won that year's Academy Award for Best Original Song. It is most well-known for being sung in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's by Audrey Hepburn, although it has been covered by many other artists.

It became the theme song for Andy Williams, who first recorded the song in 1961 and performed it at the Academy Awards ceremonies in 1962. He sang the first eight bars of the song at the beginning of his television show; he also named his production company and venue in Branson, Missouri after Moon River.

The success of the song was responsible for re-launching Mercer's career as a songwriter, which had stalled in the mid-1950s because rock and roll replaced jazz standards as the popular music of the time. An inlet near Savannah, Georgia, Johnny Mercer's hometown, was named Moon River in honor of him and this song. The popularity of the song is such that it has been used as a test sample in a study on people's memories of popular songs.

Lyrics

The phrase "Huckleberry friend" was explained by Mercer in an interview with Terry Gross on National Public Radio's "Fresh Air". In his childhood, Mercer would go collect huckleberries with friends along the river. Thus it is a nostalgic reference to childhood. Other comment about the song has noted that it is particularly reminiscent of Mercer's youth in the Southern United States.

Music analysis

The original Henry Mancini recording is in F major. The song opens with an instantly recognizable melody - "moon river", featuring the distinctive perfect fifth upward leap from the 5th (C) to the 2nd (G), which is immediately balanced and contrasted by the subsequent graceful step to the tonic (F), before gliding down (as you sail down the river) with four consecutive steps (E-D-C-B). Another upward leap follows (F-high E) before the five consecutive steps are repeated again, followed by another leap downwards (C-F) to a step (G). The chord progression is as follows: tonic (F major), sixth (D minor), fourth (B major), tonic (F major), fourth (B major), tonic (F major), seventh (Edim7), major third (A major).

"You dream maker" features many leaps of thirds and fifths; "you dream maker" sees the melody drop from the third to the dominant before leaping to the fifth and dropping to the third; this is repeated in "you heartbreaker". "Wherever you're going, I'm going your way"'s dramatic message is emphasised by the dramatic melody to accompany the lyrics in an arpeggiated tonic chord ascending melody where the third moves to the tonic which moves up the arpeggio into the third, the fifth and lastly, the (octave), creating a nice high climax, before stepping down to the seventh. There is a melodic sequence where the octave-seventh-sixth motive ("going, I'm") is repeated one step lower (seventh-sixth-fifth) ("going your") before moving to the sixth; This is matched by the harmonic sequence as well; where the chord progression moves from Bm-E (a rise of a fourth), repeated a step lower (Am-D), before moving one step lower (Gm-C).

The first part of the melody "moon river" is then repeated in "two drifters", before moving to a coda in "we're after the same rainbow's end" - which features the same arpeggiated tonic chord ascending melody (F-A-C-high F) before moving up and down just like the shape of the rainbow (F-G-F) - an example of word painting - and then moving down to "end" on C (which is matched by the chord F/A), before the "wider than a mile" melody of E-D-C-B-C is repeated two times, which is followed by a graceful closure of the song, "moon river, and me" (F-B-G-A-F): note the melodic sequence that follows as the interval of a descending third is repeated a step lower again.

Dan West

Very good!!

"Mother Nature's Son" is a Lennon/McCartney song, released by The Beatles on The Beatles (The White Album). It was written primarily by Paul McCartney, and was inspired by a lecture given by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi while The Beatles were in India. The same lecture inspired Lennon's unreleased song "Child of Nature," the tune of which he later re-used for "Jealous Guy." The song was later covered by Harry Nilsson.

Excellent!!

"Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" is a hit song written and recorded by Billy Joel. The track details the singer's disgust with the upwardly-mobile bourgeois aspirations of working and lower-middle class New Yorkers who take pride at working long hours in order to afford the outward signs of having "made it". Named characters have stereotypically immigrant or first-generation American names (Anthony, Mama Leone, Sergeant O'Leary) and their jobs are blue-collar. Joel considers their rejection of their working-class roots (trading a Chevy for a Cadillac and buying a house in Hackensack) to be ultimately futile; In the end, the rewards are a "heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ack" or "a broken back" (c.f. Joel's portrayal of himself in "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant").

According to Joel, Anthony isn't a real person, but rather "every Irish, Polish, and Italian kid trying to make a living in the U.S."

The song originally appeared on his 1977 album, The Stranger. A live performance of it can be heard on 2000 Years: The Millennium Concert.

Broadway musical

Main article: Movin' Out (musical)

The Twyla Tharp Broadway dance musical Movin' Out, featuring the songs of Billy Joel, opened at the Richard Rodgers Theater, New York, on October 24, 2002, and played 1,307 performances before closing in December 2005. The lead piano player and singer of the show was Michael Cavanaugh. It toured the U.S. extensively from 2004 through 2007, featuring Darren Holden as lead Piano Man, and Matt Wilson, James Fox and Matthew Friedman as second Piano Men. The show transferred to London's West End on April 10, 2006, at the Apollo Victoria Theatre - where James Fox played lead piano and sang, with Darren Reeves as second piano man. However, it closed early on 22nd May due to poor ticket sales.

Movin' Out is also the title of the original Broadway cast album taken from the above musical.

Great sequence, Bob. But an oldie only chronologically. It's a classic. I've included some background of the song along with lyrics.
Thanks for this MIDI.

(me) Bob

Published in 1933, "It's Only a Paper Moon" (link will reveal all the recording artists of the song) is a popular song written by Harold Arlen with lyrics by E. Y. Harburg and Billy Rose. It was written originally for an unsuccessful broadway play called The Great Magoo, set in Coney Island. It was subsequently used in the movie Take a Chance, later in 1933. But its lasting fame stems from a series of recordings of the song by popular artists such as the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, the Nat King Cole Trio, and Ella Fitzgerald, and from its use as a vehicle for improvisation by many jazz musicians.
The song was included in the Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire, which opened in 1947.
The song lent its title to the 1973 Peter Bogdanovich film Paper Moon and the subsequent television series of the same name.
The song, with a newly composed counter-melody by Kander and Ebb, is a musical segment in the film Funny Lady, starring Barbra Streisand and James Caan.
The song was used in the Star Trek series Deep Space Nine in an episode with the same title as the song.

Music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by E.Y. Harburg and Billy Rose, 1933

Harold Arlen was a busy man in 1932. When he wasn't performing at the Palace as a featured songwriter or accompanying Ethel Merman, he was writing songs for The Cotton Club, hits like "Stormy Weather" and "I've Got the World on a String." Hollywood was calling, too, wanting some of that Cotton Club magic in their movies.

Meanwhile, over at the Selwyn Theatre on 42nd St, Billy Rose was producing a new play by Ben Hecht and Gene Fowler, The Great Magoo, a show about the ambitions and love among the workers at Coney Island; it was not a musical. But Rose asked Arlen for a song anyway. and Arlen found the time to come up with a tune. Yip Harburg recalls the task:

"(Rose) called and said, 'We need a song here for guy who's a Coney Island barker. A very cynical guy who falls in love and finds that the world is not all Coney Island-- not papier mache and lights and that sort of gaudy stuff. But it's got to be a love song.' Well, I tried to think of a cynical love story, something that this kind of a guy would sing. But I could never really be cynical. I could see life in all its totality, its reality." (Interview with Max Wilk, 1973)
Harburg and Rose finally hammered out some lyrics together to the number they called "If You Believed in Me."
Say it's only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But, it wouldn't be make-believe if you believed in me

Unfortunately, the show was a flop. Audiences instead were flocking to see Ethel Merman in Take a Chance at the Apollo, literally right next door to the Selwyn. This Nacio Herb Brown musical was such a hit that Hollywood rushed its version into production, taking several actors from the cast with it (but not Merman. She'd be replaced with Lilian Roth). One of the cast members who went to Hollywood was June Knight. And she was given a new song to sing with Charles "Buddy" Rogers that she hadn't done on Broadway-- a song from the show next door, newly retitled "It's Only a Paper Moon."

While the movie is mostly forgotten now, the song had staying power. Many people attribute the song's popularity to Nat King Cole. The King Cole Trio put out a recording on Capitol records in 1944, which charted at #23. Ella Fitzgerald's cover went to #9 on Billboard's Pop charts the following year backed up by the Delta Rhythm Boys on Decca, and both recordings can be heard today on nostalgia formatted radio stations. But Cole, and Fitzgerald, (and pretty much all the big bands at the time) were merely reviving an old favorite from the movie: Paul Whiteman had charted with the song in 1933 (#9), and even one of the cast members of Take a Chance, Cliff Edwards, AKA "Ukulele Ike" had success with his recording (#13 in 1933).

Yes it's only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn't be make-believe if you believe in me

Bridge:
Without your love
It's a honkey-tonk parade
Without your love
It's a melody played in a penny arcade

It's a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phoney as it can be
But, it wouldn't be make-believe if you believed in me
Harburg's and Rose's lyrics have made the song a pop standard. Among those who have recorded the song are Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Harry Nilsson, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Bobby Darin, Dion and the Belmonts, Marvin Gaye, Dick Haymes, Maureen McGovern, Mitch Miller, Jim Reeves, Mel Torme, James Taylor, and even Rufus Wainwright.

Notably, this song, like much of the Arlen songbook, has also become a jazz standard --a favorite of instrumentalists, and so you can also find recordings from Django Reinhardt, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Art Blakely, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Stephane Grapelli, Coleman Hawkins, Lionel Hampton, Stan Kenton, Gene Krupa, Marian McPartland, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, and Lester Young.
