This is tribute to John Lennon, who was shot and killed the year before. Harrison remained friends with Lennon after The Beatles broke up.
Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney played on this along with Denny Laine from McCartney's band Wings.
Long time Beatle producer George Martin produced this for Harrison. Geoff Emerick, one of The Beatles sound engineers, also had a hand in this tune. (thanks, chet - saratoga springs, NY, for above 2)

"All Of Me" is one of those songs you hear in hotel lounges a lot lately, but really should be getting more recognition. A great vocal piece in its own right, "All Of Me" has been recorded by the greatest performers of all, including among others, Count Basie.

Personal quotes

"I don't like my voice that much. I think I'm a much better actress than singer. Singing is like going to a party at someone else's house. Acting is like having the party at your own house. When you go to someone else's house for a party, it's not your responsibility at all, but when you have the party at your own house, there's a lot of responsibility. Everyone has to have a good time. So for me, acting is deeper".

"In this business you have to be tough, and if someone pushes me really far I can certainly be impossible. I've always said, 'if you're nice they walk over you and if you stand up for yourself they call you a bitch'".

"I'm not a role model, nor have I ever tried to be a role model. The only thing about me as a role model is I've managed to stay here and be working and survive. For 40 years".

"I'm like a bumper car. When I did an infomercial I was fodder for every TV comedy show. I couldn't get a job. People said I was a huge joke. I've been a joke so many times. I've been on my way out since I started, but I'm strong willed. My mother is so much tougher than I am and my grandmother is so much tougher than my mother".

"I haven't a clue why I've lasted so long. There's no reason. There are many people more talented than me. I think it's luck".

"I was a shy ugly kid who led a big fantasy life. I thought I was an angel sent from heaven, to cure polio. When Dr. Salk did that I was really pissed off." - (People Magazine 7/1/85)

Salary
Moonstruck (1987) $1,000,000
Suspect (1987) $1,000,000
The Witches of Eastwick (1987) $1,000,000
Mask (1985) $500 000 + 5% gross points
Silkwood (1983) $150,000

Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:

Her Top 40 hits and TV series with then-husband Sonny Bono in the 1960s and 1970s made Cher a pop culture icon before she ever hit the silver screen. Her struggle to be taken seriously as an actress while not sacrificing any of the campy flamboyance she displayed in her singing career has provided consistent fodder for the entertainment media. She first surprised doubters with a credible turn in a "small" picture, Robert Altman's Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982). She had appeared in three films before that, including the William Friedkin-directed Good Times (1967, with Sonny). She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for a strong performance as title character Meryl Streep's unglamorous, hardheaded lesbian roommate in Silkwood (1983), her first prestige production. Cher's clashes with director Peter Bogdanovich on the set of her next picture, the I-was-ateenage-Elephant-Man tearjerker Mask (1985, which earned her a shared Best Actress award at Cannes), along with her general outspokenness, penchant for tattoos, and exhibitionistic fashion sense ignited a media myth she appeared to resent even as she stoked its fires.

The Oscar that she coveted did not elude her for long; she won the 1987 Best Actress Academy Award for her performance in Moonstruck a romantic comedy centering around some eccentric Brooklyn Italians. She was also featured with two other major female stars, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer, in 1987's desultory The Witches of Eastwick after taking time from films to pick up the slack of her increasingly irrelevant but still fairly lucrative singing career, she made Mermaids (1990), during the shooting of which her displeasure with original director Frank Oz led to his being replaced by Richard Benjamin. Cher was inactive on screen for several years, focusing instead on hugely successful exercise videos and infomercials. After cameos (as herself) in the Robert Altman films The Player (1992) and Ready to Wear/Pràt-ê-Porter (1994), she returned as a hit man's target in Faithful (1995).

I don't think everything that comes to this list need always be a popular tune.  Good music  and exceptional sequencing come in a variety of styles, and so I offer   El Día Que Me Quieras  as an example.  Don't let the small file size fool you Enjoy.

Classic Rockers In The News

For the first time in the last 32 years, Dick Clark wasn't in Time Square to celebrate New Year's Eve. The 75 year old TV host / producer was forced to watch the show from his hospital bed after suffering a mild stroke on December 6th. A spokesman said that Mr. Clark had been doing some rehab and that doctors are encouraged with his progress. He would not comment on tabloid reports about paralysis and impaired speech suffered by Clark.

After a grilled cheese sandwich that was said to bear the image of the Virgin Mary sold on eBay for $28,000, the on-line auction phenomenon has taken another twist. A North Carolina man named Wade Jones has sold three tablespoons of water taken from a cup used by Elvis Presley during a 1977 concert for $455. Jones was just 13 when he saw Presley perform at the Charlotte Coliseum, and watched Elvis drink from the cup while he introduced his band. After the show, Jones went to the stage and collected the cup and later froze the water, eventually melting it and storing it in a glass vial. As proof of the water's authenticity, Jones provided photos of Presley during the concert in which several plastic foam cups can be seen on a stand behind him. Another photo shows Presley holding a cup.

After an experimental reunion gig at Cleveland's House of Blues the day after Thanksgiving, Eric Carmen and the rest of the original Raspberries are schedualed to reunite for some more shows and possibly a full tour in 2005. Carmen, along with drummer Jim Bonfanti, guitarist Wally Bryson and bassist Davie Smalley have been split since 1975 after scoring four Top fourty hits between 1972 and 1974, including the Billboard number 5 hit "Go All The Way". Carmen went on to enjoy a solo career highlighted by eight Top fourty chart makers including three Top Ten hits, "All By Myself" (#2), "Hungry Eyes (#4) and "Make Me Lose Control" (#3). Carmen said "Over thirty-plus years, a certain myth has grown up around the band. And the last thing I ever wanted to do was put us on a stage somewhere, in less than the best circumstances, and pop the bubble, have the fans come in and say, 'Gee, they weren't that good'. It's your responsibility to give them something to be excited about."

Eagles fans will want to know that they can replace their old vynyl albums with CDs as WEA International has just re-issued "Eagles", "On The Border", "One Of These Nights", Hotel California", "Long Run", "Desperado" and "Eagles Live".

Be sure to check out the latest of Gary James' interviews with members of Chicago, The Buckinghams, The Angels and Bill Haley's Comets in our "Rock and Roll Interviews" section.

The year 1981 saw the release of her most successful album Mistaken Identity containing her most popular and well known song "Bette Davis Eyes." Written in 1974 by Jackie DeShannon and Donna Weiss, the song was originally rejected by Kim. Rejected only until a new instrumentation arrangement done by Bill Cuomo convinced her that it was a hit. The public agreed driving it to #1 on the charts. "Bette Davis Eyes" won Kim her 1981 Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Bette Davis wrote to Kim after the song was released and stated that she was very pleased with the song as it made her seem very up to date with her grandson. She had Kim sing the song live for her at a tribute held just before her death.

According to Whitney Stine in her book "I'd Like To Kiss You":

"...A few months later I gave a dinner party for the writer Anais Nin, who called at the last moment to ask if she might bring along a houseguest, singer Jackie De Shannon. She turned out to be a vivacious redhead with a delightful sense of humor. Upon leaving, Jackie took my hand. 'I loved Mother Goddam', she said, 'and I'll never forget the look in Paul Henreids eyes when he lighted those 2 cigarettes in the ending of Now Voyager. I want to write a song about the great Bette Davis'. I told her, 'Good Luck' and I promptly forgot the incident. But true to her word, Jackie, with Donna Weiss, wrote Bette Davis Eyes, a song Kim Carnes recorded 7 years later in 1981. At long last, Kim finally had the hit her life."

"Bette came out to a huge ovation, and the interview proceeded. Also on the show was throaty singer Kim Carnes, with whom I had shared a limousine to the studio. Kim remarked hopefully that her new recording would make the charts. 'I need a hit so badly, and maybe this is it!'

Bette was intrigued with Kim. "What's wrong with your voice? Do you have a cold?', she asked after the number. 'That's just me,' Kim laughed. Bette giggled. 'You sound like you just swallowed a safety pin!'

Playboy Magazine interviewed Bette Davis in July 1982:

PLAYBOY: Another description of you was in that Kim Carnes song that was so popular last year, Bette Davis Eyes. Do you know all the words?

DAVIS: (Sings) "She's ferocious... She throws you..." No, I haven't learned the lyrics, really, but I think the writers are damned clever. I wrote them and said, "How did you know me so well?".

Other charting tracks from Mistaken Identity include "Mistaken Identity" (#60) and "Draw of the Cards (#28).

The brothers Alex and Edward were born in Holland in 1955 and 1957 respectively, where they lived until 1965, when the Van Halen's moved to Pasadena, California. They were a musical family. Jan, their father, was an accomplished clarinet player and Alex and Ed were both originally trained as concert pianists. Their interests then shifted towards more popular music, so they changed their instrument of choice; Ed's being drums and Alex's the guitar. Ed had a paper route to pay for his drum set, so while he was out delivering them, Alex would play his drums. Eventually, Alex got better than Edward, so he started playing Alex's guitar. This seemed to work out rather nicely, so this way it stayed.

After high school, playing in various cover bands, Ed was handling the lead singing duties. They rented their P.A. from David Lee Roth, who was in a local band The Red Ball Jets. He had moved to Pasadena with his father from Bloomington, Indiana in 1972. Ed, hating to sing lead vocals, convinced Dave to join the band which was later named Mammoth.

One gig they shared the bill with a band called Snake, who's lead singer and bass player was Michael Anthony, from Chicago, Illinois. The band invited Mike to jam with them, then later asked him to join the band. Being very impressed with them, he agreed and joined Mammoth.

Realizing another band had layed claim to the name Mammoth, the boys tossed around some new names, (one of them being Rat Salade), until they finally decided upon Van Halen.

While playing at an LA club called The Starwood, Gene Simmons spots them and decides to produce a demo for them. (On it was an early version of "House of Pain" and "Runnin' with the Devil", complete with car horn which served as a transition between the two songs.) Ed was a little uncomforable in the studio, playing on someone elses equipment and not being used to the idea of multi-track recording. The demo is rejected by all major studios.

In 1977, a year after making the demo, Warner Brothers producer Ted Templeman spots them at the same club that Gene first saw them. He convinces partner Mo Ostin to sign the band, and in February 1978, Van Halen is released.

And the world was a little better place.

Six platium albums later, in 1985, Dave decided to leave the band to pursue solo interests. The band tossed around the idea of doing an album with different singers on each song, before deciding to look for a permanent replacement.

While at a Lamborghini repair shop called Claudio's, Ed mentions that he is looking for a new singer. Claudio, in turn, mentions Sammy Hagar, who was in the band Montrose and now a successful solo artist, who's Lamborghini is also in the shop. Ed calls him, and they set up a time for him to meet the band.

After a short business meeting, they decide to jam. Eddie plays a song he had been working on, which Sammy began singing impromptu lyrics to. This song, with much of these original lyrics intact became "Summer Nights." They got along great, and a new line-up was found. Their next album was 5150, which went to #1, a first for the band. After that they have had continued success, with every one of their studio albums being certified multi-platinum.

Now after 11 years with Sammy Hagar, Van Halen surprises us with a "new" singer, David Lee Roth returns to the band to be part of the Greatest Hits Album and records 2 songs to be included in the material, he is not member of Van Halen.

Gary Cherone former lead vocalist of the band Extreme became the new member of Van Halen replacing Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth.

I used to think that when Sinatra got older, his voice just didn't cut it anymore.  Boy, did I get it wrong!  You have to get older yourself to really appreciate the man's talent and vocal control.  I once saw Sammy Davis Jr in concert at Vegas and for a little guy, he could rock the house............I loved it!!

Lyrics

FLY ME TO THE MOON (Frank Sinatra)

Fly me to the moon
Let me sing among those stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars

In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby kiss me

Fill my heart with song
Let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore

In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you

BILLBOARD MAGAZINE calls Bobby Vinton "the all-time most successful love singer of the 'Rock-Era'". This is a name that has been synonymous with superstardom, a true survivor and today he continues to enjoy success as a top-rated performer. Today, Bobby is one of the few stars who is capable of headlining in Atlantic City and Las Vegas in addition to playing dates around the world. He has established himself as one of America's top concert performers and most versatile entertainers. The hit songs Bobby has given us over the years have become classics. His impressive list of hits includes renowned love songs such as: ROSES ARE RED, BLUE VELVET, and MR. LONELY. His songs are recognized as standards throughout the world and his music has retained its vitality and relevance through our changing times. Bobby's hit-making capability was again evidenced with the release of MY MELODY OF LOVE, when it became the #1 song in the nation and was embraced by Polish Americans around the country as their new national anthem. Not long after, his best selling autobiography THE POLISH PRINCE was published. "During the first ten years of the rock era, Vinton had more #1 hits than any other male vocalist including Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra", quotes BILLBOARD MAGAZINE. The phenomenal success Bobby experienced in the recording industry carried over to other areas of the entertainment world.

For three years, his recordings aired in over 140 cities throughout the United States and Canada. He also hosted a highly rated network variety special for CBS Television (it triumphed over Monday Night Football!!) and starred in two John Wayne movies: "Big Jake" and "The Train Robbers".      Bobby, never satisfied resting on the laurels of his accomplishment, received the idea to create his own theater while he was performing in Branson, Missouri. The culmination of Bobby's idea and efforts was the BOBBY VINTON BLUE VELVET THEATRE. A 1600 seat European style theatre complete with ceiling murals, Italian tile and blue velvet accents. His vision also included arranging his hits to blend with that of the Big Band sound.

A multi-talented musician as well as a singer and actor, Bobby was born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania (a suburb of Pittsburgh), the son of a locally popular band leader, Stan Vinton. When he was a young boy, his parents encouraged him to study music, and at the age of sixteen formed his first band. The band played clubs around the Pittsburgh area and with the money he earned, Bobby helped finance his college education at Duquesne University. There he studied music and graduated with a degree in Musical Composition. While at Duquesne, he became proficient on all of the instruments in the band (piano, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, drums and the oboe) -- a talent which he displays in his shows today. He recently received an honorary doctoral degree in music from his alma mater.

After a short stint in the army, (which served as the inspiration for one of his biggest hits, MR. LONELY), Bobby and his band appeared on Guy Lombardo's "TV Talent Scouts". A subsequent four-week contract on that show landed him a contract with Epic Records, the label that released Bobby's first single, ROSES ARE RED, which began his extraordinary career as a vocalist. The record climbed to the #1 spot on the charts and eventually sold over four million copies. It included such songs as ROSES ARE RED, THERE I'VE SAID IT AGAIN, PLEASE LOVE ME FOREVER, I LOVE HOW YOU LOVE ME, and of course MY MELODY OF LOVE. As a result of these and many more hits, Bobby was awarded over a dozen gold records and albums during his career and has sold over 75 million records. Over the past several years, Bobby has been honored by over one hundred national organizations and more than a dozen mayors across the United States for his unique contributions to the ethnic communities. He was invited to Poland as a guest of the government. As a tribute to his talents and community services the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce bestowed the ultimate honor upon Vinton--a bronze star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard.

DONNA THE PRIMA DONNA
Dion & The Belmonts

Donna, Donna the Prima Donna
Broke my heart.
We're apart.
Thinks she's smart.

I met a girl a month ago
I thought that she would love me so.
But in time I realized.
She had a pair of roving eyes.

I remember the nights we dated,
Always acting sophisticated,
Talking about high society,
Then she tried to make a fool out of me.

They call her Donna, Donna the Prima Donna
Broke my heart now.
Thinks she's smart now.
We're apart now.

Pretty little girl you're just having fun
You're running all around and breaking lover's hearts.
Pretty little girl, I don't stand a chance,
Without any money there goes our romance.

She always wears charms, diamonds, pearls galore,
She buys them at the 5 & 10 cents store.
She wants to be just like Zsa Zsa Gabor,
Even though she's the girl next door.

They call her Donna, Donna the Prima Donna.
Broke my heart.
Thinks she's smart.
We're apart.

Pretty little girl you're just having fun,
You're running all around, you're breaking lover's hearts.
Pretty little girl, I don't stand a chance,
Without any money there goes our romance.

She always wears charms, diamonds, pearls galore,
She buys them at the 5 & 10 cents store.
She wants to be just like Zsa Zsa Gabor,
Even though she's Donna next door.

You know what's great about Rod and a few others? Just the fact alone that they recognize some of Americas great standards, and appreciate the ever evolving music.
I have all of Rod's "Standards" CD's and for a old rocker, he does a damn good job on these tunes.
Here's hoping that he continues with them and that many others will follow suit.
Who would have thunk it? Apparently Mr. Stewart..all the way to the bank.

Lesley Gore literally burst onto the music scene in 1963 when her first single, "It's My Party" was rushed into production by record producer Quincy Jones, and within weeks of its release, it was a number one hit. This was to be her only number one song, but she was to be far more than a "one hit wonder" and had a much greater impact on music and society in general than numbers alone indicate.
Her greatest musical impact began when she was asked by Quincy to record a song she really didn't like, and made a deal with him to record it if he let her select a song on her own to record. The song she selected was "You Don't Own Me", an anthem of women's rights that predated Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" by several years. "You Don't Own Me" made it to number 2 on the charts, and managed this in spite of being up against two of the Beatles' biggest hits. It probably sold more actual copies than "It's My Party".
Lesley recorded several top 40 hits during the 60's. She polished her musical and performing skills during this period, and also began composing songs. She proved to be very capable at composing both music and lyrics. Her first published song in which she did both, "Leave Me Alone", became one of the hits from the movie "The Girls On The Beach".
By the 70's, Lesley had faded from the popular music scene, but it was during this period that she did some of her finest work, both as a singer and a composer. The two albums she recorded during this period, "Someplace Else Now" and "Love Me By Name" are treasured by her fans, and "Love Me By Name" in particular was also well received by the critics. Other singers began recognizing her skill as a composer, and began recording her songs. The late Dusty Springfield put her stamp of approval on Lesley's music when she did a beautiful cover of the title song from her second 70's album, "Love Me By Name".
During the 80's, Lesley recorded less frequently, but made an even greater impact as a composer, when the song "Out Here On My Own", which she wrote with her brother Michael, appeared in the movie "Fame", and was nominated for an Oscar. Lesley also thrilled her fans during this period by appearing in concerts, both large and small. In large oldies concerts, she brought back memories to her fans as she did the songs that made her famous. In intimate cabaret-style concerts, she proved her versatility by singing many different kinds of songs.
In the 90's, Lesley continued to compose and sing, and finally, in 1999, she realized a childhood dream when she appeared on Broadway as a guest star in the musical review "Smokey Joe's Cafe". And now she is working on her own musical review, something her fans eagerly look forward to. Her star is on the rise again, and it's still her party.

and they charted the classic "Stay" at # 1 in 1960.
The Diamonds' all-time biggest hit, featuring lead singer Dave Somerville
(with Bill Reed doing the bass vocal narration). Technically, this could be
considered one of the very first "rap" songs, since it features hip
narration over the middle break of the song. Cover version of the
Gladiolas' 1957 Top 50 R&B hit. This pop version also made the Top 5 on
the R&B charts. Dave Somerville says Little Darling was THE first record
pressed on a 45.
Peaked at # 2 in 1957

Little Eva is undoubtedly the most famous babysitter in the history of rock and roll. When her songwriting employers asked her to record one of their songs she had no idea how successful it would turn out to be.

Eva Narcissus Boyd was born in 1945 in Belhaven, North Carolina, and had fifteen brothers and sisters. She moved to New York City to complete her education. Eva became the regular babysitter for Louise Goffin, daughter of Brill Building songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King. Through that connection, she became a backup singer on Ben E. King's Don't Play That Song (You Lied) in 1962, along with the Cookies -- Earl-Jean McRea, Dorothy Jones, and Margaret Ross.

Carole King was working out a song on the piano one day when Eva began a dance step, giving Gerry Goffin the idea for some lyrics. The result was a dance song, The Loco-Motion. Goffin and King brought Eva to the studio to record the song, backed by the Cookies and some inspired saxophone music. The time was right for a rocking dance song, which was popular in the early 60's. Within weeks after Eva turned seventeen, The Loco-Motion entered the music charts and shot to the top of the pop music lists in the late summer of 1962.

Eva was hot. Recording on the Dimension label later in 1962, she followed up with another Goffin-King song, this time a non-dance number titled Keep Your Hands Off My Baby. It reached number 12. The following year Little Eva had another dance tune hit, Let's Turkey Trot. Produced by Leon Huff in Philadelphia, an answer song to The Loco-Motion was issued: Little Eva, by the Locomotions.

Eva had other minor hits, including Old Smokey Locomotion and a duet with Big Dee Irwin that was a cover of Bing Crosby's Swinging On A Star, both in 1963. Eva Boyd is a good singer. Just before her career began as a teenager she had no training or experience in singing outside of her church choir. She was able to handle many types of songs, although some were a little difficult for her.

The Cookies, meanwhile, went on to score with some hits of their own on the Dimension label, including Chains (later covered by the Beatles) and Don't Say Nothin' Bad (About My Baby). They also sang backup on some records recorded by Eydie Gorme. Eva's sister Idalia Boyd had a minor hit with Hula Hooping, a song about another fad.

The Beatles and other British groups had an enormous impact on popular music beginning in 1964, and Little Eva was one of many American artists who were victims of the changes that were taking place. She recorded for other labels such as Spring and Amy. In the 1970's, she left the music business. She eventually returned home to Bellhaven, North Carolina. Little Eva returned to performing on the oldies circuit in the 1990's.

Her song The Loco-Motion is identified with the pre-Beatles era of rock music and was a legitimate number one hit, typical of the Brill Building style of music that was so prominent in the early 60's. A version of the song recorded by Grand Funk Railroad reached number one in the 70's and another version by Kylie Minogue went to number three in the 80's. The song with the infectious beat that Little Eva brought to prominence in 1962 is remembered fondly by lovers of 60's rock-and-roll.

Eva Boyd battled cancer of the cervix for years in her later life. She performed up unil 2001 when her cancer became too much for her to continue. She lost her battle and died on April 9, 2003 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, North Carolina, leaving two daughters and a son.

He does a good acting job playing the misunderstood, delinquent teenager.
