Hello,

I'm looking for someone who can provide 10-25 hours per month in link-building for a variety of my clients. I'm interested only in people who have proven experience in doing this, can do it completely on their own without training from me, who can clearly document their time, and who are preferably working in the industry.

Moonlighters are great, as long as you aren't crossing any ethical barriers for moonlighting with your company. Pay is DOQ, ranging between $35-$50 per hour for the right person. I'm currently using advanced link manager and a few other tracking tools for this.

Nina

Hope you all can make it.

What? Short Circuits Event (Comparable to Minnebar)
When? This Saturday @ 1pm
Where? Acadia Cafe
What's being presented? Everything you can imagine, from video production, graphics techniques, 3D rendering, to networking solutions via Merakis.
Cost? 5 Bones

We've currently got 9 speakers and have room for 3 more if you'd like to present something.

Want more info? Check out Open Circuit's web site: http://tcopencircuit.org/

Here's the Press Release:

Local Open Source Geeks to Host Rapid Fire Tech-Sharing Event
Open Circuit, a local technology promoting group, will be hosting their first event Saturday, December 1st @ Acadia Cafe. The event, entitled Short Circuits, will consist of a series of 10-15 minute presentations about using open source technology and information sharing to better our community.
Open Circuit was established this past summer out of the desire for local open source technology enthusiasts to share knowledge and educate others. Amanda Luker, a longtime volunteer at Arise! Bookstore in south Minneapolis, helped found the group out of a desire to find people struggling with similar issues. "In many activist and nonprofit organizations, the volunteers or staff managing websites or other technology pieces are self-taught or overworked -- or both. Having a network to share information and ask questions is something we desperately need, and fits with our ideals of 'open source' information."
Internet marketer and citizen journalist Bretton Jones joined Open Circuit out of a desire to aid local nonprofits and community organizations. These organizations "can easily boost their messages via community and social media networks, building bridges to new, young audiences of helpful volunteers." Jones will be presenting on web video production and syndication method. Local Flash developer and open source enthusiast Thomas Saunders views his interaction with computers akin to interaction with a musical instrument. "You can do some cool things with your own instrument, but you can't have a symphony without a large group of people learning, sharing, practicing, and playing together, and that's how I kind of view this organization."
Anyone is welcome to sign up and present on a project they are working on (open source is encouraged, but not required). A projector, laptop and PA will be provided for the presentations. Each presentation will be followed by a short time for questions or feedback.
A few examples of some presentations are:
  1. Building a community wireless mesh network
  2. Video blogging
  3. Social media utilization
  4. Making 3 dimensional panoramas with flash and Papervision3d, an open source Flash 3d engine
  5. Drupal-based site hosting a database of youth media projects - Free educational software for teaching the building blocks of programming
More information is available at http://tcopencircuit.org/. The cost of the event is $5.
Open Circuit is a Twin Cities knowledge-sharing network working to demystify computers and information technology. They foster the free circulation of technical knowledge to help community organizations increase their organizing capacity and improve the common good.

I also use LinkedIn, Facebook, Naymz and a little Sphinn.  Just started an account on Moz as well, but in exploring mode.  Used Reddit and Digg to read, but never really participated.  Both got old quickly.  Have an account on MySpace, but it is useless.

I have found both LinkedIn and Naymz to be slick.  Naymz needs some more critical mass before becoming really useful, but it did lead me to a potential new hire for our business here at Findlaw.  Turns out that did not work out, but still, a valuable resource.  I like the notifications and the points system - an attempt at encouraging members to beef up their profiles and to network with each other.

From a reputation management perspective though, My naymz profile pops strongly, while LinkedIn is not doing nearly as well.

Hello!
My notes:
Overall, loved it.

The SEO Efforts session could have been a half hour. Lance Loveday
was a good speaker, but I need my information fast and struggled
through the "what is SEO" slides. He covered tactical tips for
optimizing video, blogs, and RSS feeds which was nice. MIMA will make
all the presentations avail for download so it will be a nice
reference guide.

My personal favorite was PIMP My Reports- helpful reminder on
organizing data
My least favorite was the Internet Mtkg Toolbox.

The lunch was a major issue, I waited in line for 30 min.

I think we really need an active group specifically for search
marketing in TC. I think there is a lot of opportunity. That may be
another post...

Thanks!
Lisa

MIMA recently announced the session details
<http://summit.mima.org/07/schedule/index.htm> for the 2007 MIMA
Summit <http://summit.mima.org/07/> . The Summit is Wednesday, October
3rd at The Depot in Minneapolis from 7:45 am to 7:30 pm. Times for the
individual sessions are not released yet but the Breakout session
speakers, titles and descriptions are available.

I don't see much focused specifically on seo/sem but Google's Jim
Lecinski is speaking on Ten Trends Shaping the Digital World. My guess
is he will hit the topics of universal search and all the mediums being
integrated into the SERPs along with the other advertising ops they have
now. Maybe he will give some info on YouTube advertising????

Even though there is not a lot on search engines I see a few other
sessions that can be useful. One is Lets Talk Legal: Legal Issues
Impacting Interactive Marketers by James P Quinn of Larkin Hoffman
Attorneys will cover the top 5 issues facing the online community.

For the rest of the sessions take a gander at the MIMA Summit site via
the links above and see what intrigues you.

Are you going to attend?
What sessions are you interested in?

I plan to be there but my schedule is not quite set yet.

Luckily it's not for me or my sites.

Our advertising client was looking at this because lifetips cold

not the best approach. Their whole pitch underwhelmed me.

Thanks for the info!

Lisa,

If they can send you $5000 worth of sales, then you’d break even. If you’re buying that package for ‘link juice’ alone, you could probably find that kind of value for $100. It doesn’t matter if they gave you 5000 articles all across their site with custom anchor text. It’s still from 1 domain. A mediocre one at that. Near worthless.

I would take that $5000 and spread it across an intelligent link building campaign encompassing themed sites that are relevant to your niche.

i have not used or heard of lifetips.com. if they have enough traffic
maybe they can send a little traffic your way via the links. but
concerning the links and whether they will help your rankings all
depends on how good google is at identifying paid links. if google
identifies your links as paid they won't pass any juice. when looking
at the lifetips.com site its out in the open that they are selling
link packages. if they haven't already i think google will identify
by algorithm or snitch style that these links are paid.

Yeah, I talked to them a few years ago, and it seemed slightly interesting – one client thought about using them, but that’s as far as it went. Definitely is a content/linking scheme, but possibly not a wretched one. I threw out the kit myself just last week when I was doing a cleaning purge.

Yes, they charge $5,000 a year for the "tips" content and links from
their site. They show the clients reports detailing how they increased
ranking in the SERPs because lifetips is a trusted site.

So, yes it's basically paid links with content around it. Which is
cool, but I think people (clients)don't understand that it's not full
service SEO.

Hi Kathy,

I talked to Adam Lasnik from Google here at SES about this specific
question today. I asked if the kind of section targeting and exclusion
possible with AdSense would be possible with Googlebot. His reply was that
this is a consideration, but unlikely to be implemented. The onus is on
the publisher to limit Googlebot from finding content you don't want
crawled.

If you were able to redirect requests to that content into a directory and
the use Robots.txt to exclude Googlebot from the directory, that might be
a consideration. (if that hasn't already been mentioned)

FYI, check out http://www.toprankblog.com for daily SES San Jose coverage.

I do have a possible solution... although it requires a change to

This would allow you to place the page containing the left column in
a different directory and then block that directory via the
robots.txt file.

They crawl the 200+ vacation destinations and Yikes! I would like
them to find the rest of the page, links, keywords and website.

Thank you for the feedback. However, frames will cause more SEO probs and the tech team can not restructure the site at this point. thanks anyhow!

I do have a possible solution... although it requires a change to
the way the page is structured (code wise). An HTML frameset or an
iframe would do the trick (okay non-frame fans, please don't shoot).

This would allow you to place the page containing the left column in
a different directory and then block that directory via the
robots.txt file.

Question -
Is there a way to add something to the Robots.txt file that will tell the crawlers to not follow a piece of a page?
I am working with a pretty significant piece - a booking engine, like an Orbitz/airline booking engine. It resides on the left hand side of the home page, sucks in crawlers, and that's all she wrote! They crawl the 200+ vacation destinations and Yikes! I would like them to find the rest of the page, links, keywords and website.

Can I add something to the Robots.txt file that will tell the crawlers "no follow booking engine on left hand side of home page" ?

Thanks all

To fellow MN based search marketers:

Are you going to SES San Jose? If so, then feel free to share your
preference for a MN SEM meetup at the following locations near the
convention center:

__ Sunday night at the Marriott lounge
__ Lunch Tuesday at Il Fornaio - Sainte Claire
__ Thursday late afternoon at the Gordon Biersch pub.

I'd suggest the Google Dance, but the music is so loud no one would
hear each other speak. :)

I've already talked to a few people and there will be a meet-up, it's
just a matter of where.

Please let me know your interest in a reply or direct email to lee at
marketingblog dot com.

Thanks!

“luxury cruise to Mars” is the example you get on Google when you are writing a text ad – the default. I’ve noticed a few times these actual ads popping up. Right now for example they’re in my gmail as I put together an email for the Planetarium. So what’s the deal here? I thought maybe it was someone new to this who had spaced out (he he) and not put in their own ad? Then I though maybe it would go to a sales page for Adwords, but the link goes to www.example.com which is not a valid url.

Any theories? Maybe someone is or has been curious enough to look this up and already knows the answer.
