All three Minolta batteries do exactly the same thing. It is almost as if capacitors inside the camera are involved, getting overloaded, then discharging -

... Unlikely "gears". Noise from focus by hand probably means that old lens was disassembled and the grease on the focus helicoid removed and not replaced.
