MisterHouse is a multiplatform (Windows and Unix), open source, home automation program written in the Perl programing language. It can be respond to voice commands, web browsers, time of day, serial port data, tcpip data, external files, etc. It can read and write to X10 devices through various interfaces (e.g. CM11, Weeder, JDS) and can speak via a Text to Speech engine or .wav files.
Not as easy to use as many home automation programs, but more powerful than most.
Best of all, its free!

I don't know about bar code integration with MH but you can buy a modded CueCat off ebay for less than $20. Its sometimes takes a couple of swipes but I like
