hi there all
yeah, sorry to all those people who mailed me asking for newsgroup
(alt.music.4-track) that i mentioned before. I got quite a few emails about it
and i wanted to post the address to the list to save individually mailing you
all, but i got bounced and gave up after the 5th time. (up until that point i
hadn't been bounced yet!). The content is really good. traffick is not huge, so
you can easily keep up with it, but there are quite a few really helpful souls
one there. So anyway, sorry, but hey, it's great this one's got a new lease on
life. Happy 4 tracking!

Not familiar at all.
I have been using the machine for a few years now and do not notice any such
thing.
Do you clean your heads before every session? Thoroughly?
Not every machine is alike, even the same type of machine. Maybe you just
have a bad fourth track?

I tend to shy away from Dolby when I make tapes, generally because there
are a number of "flavors" and there's no way of telling before hand if the
folks getting my tape will have the "flavor" I used. I also think Dolby
encoded tapes sound shrill if not played back with the proper version - way
worse than the general noise of a cassette.
I'd be interested in what others have to say.

I also use an AKG C1000. I'd say it's generally adequate. It's ok for
voices, not as warm as you might like, but it's reasonably accurate. For a
sub $200.00 mic, I think it's pretty good. But, I've already accepted the
fact that I'm ultimately going to spend three, four, or five times that for
a vocal mic.

They do indeed have this switch, and it is located on the rear of the 424MKII.

Do you have the noise reduction defeated on the track? They often have a
switch for this so that you can use the track for timecode (synch). Check
the switch, it may be called "Sync" or something like that, but a lot of
4tks have a way to disable the NR on track 4.

Generally, if you don't know what the target player is, you're better off
doing cassettes without Dolby. Dolby B is pretty common though, and some
are recorded with it. I'd probably go without myself.

I'd compare them myself if I could. I've read enough bad things about the
C3000 that I'd probably avoid it myself. For every positive post I've seen
on it, I've seen a dozen that slammed it into the ground. Adjectives like
"harsh, thin" etc. While the NT-1 probably isn't a great mic, that'd
probably be the first thing I'd try in the $200 price range.
I have a CAD E100, which isn't a bad mic for many things. Not perfect, but
I've chosen it over a 414 on some things. My friend has a high tenor voice
and the 414 makes him sound really thin. It has more detail, and sound more
"real", but for my friends music, we've used the E100 on his vocal to help
beef him up a little. I've been pleased with the results.

I have no doubt this works for you. Our Sound Track cards now have some
algorithms for slow and fast Leslie that don't sound bad either. The usual
shortcoming that neither of these solves is, to me, the best Leslie effect
which is the speeding up and slowing down of the rotation. I know some fx
units do it including the Lexicon Vortex that morphs from the one effect to
the other. I picked one up several months ago and it's still waiting to be
tried. Since I have a small Leslie, that's not what I got the Vortex for
anyway and until I play with it I still won't know why I got it. I need to
get out of Retardando into Presto mode more of the time and do some
improved time budgetting.

Hello!
My Korg Trinity has a wonderful Leslie simulator but when I want it on outboard
sounds I do things like this:
Three synced modulation effects, flanger, phaser and a tremolo. These simulate
the rotating speaker. It is best to apply these to a signal with no bass since
leslie bass speakers seldom rotate. Some guidelines for the setting up of the
effects:
A good starting point for modulation frequency is 6 Hz. Use very little if any
feedback for the flanger, and absolutely no resonance for the phaser. They
aren't supposed to sound like flanger and phaser, but to simulate the effect of
a rotating speaker. I route the flanger through a phaser, and mix both with
-25:75 wet/dry ratio. Minus means I invert the signal - for some reason this
seems to give better results since the flanger interference effect isn't so
noticeable.
Then I route the signal through a tremolo unit.
Remember to keep every effect subtle. Then add some slight stereo delay for
room behavior, even if you're going to reverb it later.
If it sounds too scifi and cheesy, try lowering flanger/phaser/tremolo depths
and check they are in perfect sync. Of course you can try offsets, but keep
them 90deg, 180deg or something like that. Experiment with phaser center
frequency for different tones.
Hope this helps some, happy tweaking!

There is an MP3 encoder called "Right Click" that lets you do just that on
a .wav file to encode. It also decodes back to .wav. Pretty fast and high
quality. And to top it off---it's freeware! A great app. Check it out at

I use a Motion sound leslie with a Voce Micro B and run it in
stereo, a little compression and some effects. So far it sounds
pretty close to the real thing ..and you are right ..ain't nuttin like
a real B with a big wooden leslie. This will do for a small studio

Anthony,
There's a guy who posts on alt.guitar.amps by the name of Lord Valve. He's an
amp guru and a Hammond guru. He can be a little crusty but he's very free with
good info for folks who ask nice. Write LV (aka Fat Willy) at

Hello,
AudioCatalyst is good, but I also tried MusicMatch Jukebox 3.1..and its very,
good, and fast. And the quality is very good. And its only 29.95, and it
has a lot many options too.. so I would check that out also ontop of
audiocatalyst.

Hi David and gang,
nice to see the list back in business.
Thanks for the 4-track info Pete (yes, there's so little time...).
I know virtually nothing about mp3 encoders, but have been
thinking about them lately too.
Another thing which must have been talked about
for a thousand times before, myself included, me thinks,
but I have this something called dementia (they say):
Any comments and solutions for achieving good Leslie-sound.
My DigiGarage is quite filled with the bad ones.
Is there a reasonable dx/vst-plug or something for the job?

lookin for quality mp3 encoders? look at the audio catalyst, its 20 or 30
bucks and so far haven't had much problems with it. it got excellent reviews
(and look here for reviews on other encoders) and MP3.com

The 4-track NG is at alt.music.4-track . I don't find time to read it so I
don't know much about the content. This list right here has been a great
