Subject: converting mkv to mp3?

Hi all. I have a bunch of mkv video files I'd like to convert to mp3. I
installed the combined community kodek pack and I can play back mkv videos.
However, I can't convert them to mp3. I've tried gold wave, sound forge,
and it just crashes them.

So I thought I would convert the videos to a supported format and then batch
convert them to mp3. It's a bit of a round about way to do it but it would
get the job done.

However, I can't seem to find a freeware video format converter that is
accessible.

I've tried any video converter and avidimux but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Cameron.

hey all! thanks for all the suggestions on the problem i was having with a
mix a couple weeks ago! sorry i didn't respond..... just work and recording
has been silly hectic lately.

we were a little crunched on time so we didn't get into trying to separate
the bass track into high and low tracks so they could be conditioned
separately. but that is a REALLY good idea.

it ended up that he was cutting EVERYTHING in the 5k range (i think..... i'm
NOT an engineer) on the bass track to make room for the synth and vocals and
hi hats. so we bumped that up, took some compression off and got it where
i'm pretty happy with it. i don't LOVE it...... but it was a guy that was
cheaper 'cause he's not super experienced.

we have three tracks up at http://www.myspace.com/nosebleedacademy .

again.... i think they would benefit from a more experienced hand working on
them.... and i can hear a couple little mistakes on the bass that should be
corrected, but i like how they came out for the amount of time we had to
spend on them.

thanks again for all the help! good stuff!

I have been whatching this and it seems that you are doing eveerything I
could think of other than 1 thing.

What OS bit are you running? 32bit or 64bit. I had a problem with cubase not
seeing all of my vst's. When I went back through my vst installs, they were
installed most of the time in the x86 program folder and my Cubase was
looking for them in the program folder, which is for 64bit files. This was a
standard install with no diviation from the default. I am running windows 7
64bit.

Try that if you are running a 64bit os.

Hi all. I called cakewalk tech support regarding my issue with missing
plugs and virtual instruments. They gave me instructions on how to do a
clean install. Which took forever as I had to reinstall everything.

Anyways, I finally get everything installed and registered/authorized,
upgrade to sonar 5.1, configure sonar, make damn sure all my plug in dlls
are where they should be, and do a vst plug in scan.

Well, low and behold, there are still a ton missing and it's worse than it
was before! Same goes for DXI virtual instruments. What the heck is going
on. This is very frustrating!

I made sure default, all plug ins was checked in the insert soft synth plug
in layout menu option. and when I do a vst scan, it finishes without any
"failed to load" messages.

Now, when I go into the plug in manager, none of the missing plugs show up
under any of the catagories.

Here are just some of the things that sonar is not seeing at all:

Session drummer 2, session drummer 3, EZ player pro, superior drummer 2.0,
drop zone, z3ta plus, IK amplitube 2 duo le, Ivory pianos 1.6, meladon,
remedy, orka, micro tonic, lazy snake, M30 tc reverb, rapture le, guitar rig
3, dimension le, baetscape, and the list goes on.

However, it does see certain plugs and virtual instruments, like cyclone,
the DXI version of hypersonic 2, rxp, dimension pro, tts1, the vox plugs,
but there are more missing then are listed.

All in all I have around 250 or more when you add them all up and I am
seeing maybe thirty but that's all.

Also, I did a reset on the vst plug ins page of global options, then
rescanned, but no luck. It seems the same.

I did not seem to have these issues with Sonar 8.31 PE. However, tech
support said they didn't have reports of plug in issues with 5 or 5.1.

I need to get back to work and this is eating up time.

Any ideas of what I can try next?

Thanks,

Cameron.

An interesting intellectual/songwriting challenge:

This was an online contest (mp3 files of the contentants entries are posted --

http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/2009/04/02/masters-of-song-fu-3-round-3-so\
ngs/
  ).

Challenge #1: write a happy song

Challenge #2: write a song with **exactly** ten different words
("a", "the", "are", "is", etc. are counted as words)

Challenge #3: write a song that suits the title "It All Makes Sense in the End"

I did #2 (but haven't recorded it yet). Many of the people just wrote
gibberish -- although "Boolean Love Song" --
http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/podpress_trac/web/8819/0/paul_and_storm-bo\
olean_love_song.mp3
-- is actually pretty clever (and catchy!)

Molly Lewis was the winner. I like her song #1 (about Mr. T), and #3
(about her disillusionment with Wikipedia).

The later for me. Soon to change, though... I have a couple of vacations coming
up and some new toys to play with. She went to Hawaii on business with her
sister last month and brought this home for me:

Tenor uke, mango wood, nice little active pickup. Sounds surprisingly good
straight into the board. I bought a cheap lap steel to go with it.

Happy birthday to Hal!

I have not been doing much recording. Started a couple of things but
haven't been able to keep up a head of steam. Been kind of preoccupied.
Started a new job yesterday and everything leading up to that has been
crazy. Also, our 22 year old daughter moved out of the house in June, and
since then I have had a lot less spare time if you know what I mean!

Been spending most of my music time playing acoustic guitar, trying to
learn some fingerstyle solo stuff. I have taken several passes at that over
the years, but this time making a bit of progress.

Where is everyone!?

Hal, hope you had a good birthday, wherever you are!

Gary

Hi all. I am having a frustrating time with sonar 8.51PE. When I first
installed it, it imported all my plugs with no trouble. However, I've
downloaded a bunch of new plugs, both straight vst dll files as well as
executable files. The proper folder is selected on the vst page in global
options, and I have scan existing plug ins and rescan failed plug ins both
checked. But, when I scan all vst folders, none of my new plugs show up.
When I bring up the folder in windows explorer, all the new plugs are there.
Also, it seems to be insisting that plugs I removed/uninstalled are still
there and I know they are not. And when you try to load a plug in that does
not exist on my system anymore, all it says is failed to load. That's it.
No explanation, no help button, no option to remove the plug in from the
list.

I've rescanned over five times now and no change.

Any idea what the heck is going on here? Any tips?

Sonar 8.51 is fine so far in all other respects, but this is quite the
headache.

Thanks,

Cameron.

It's a Palatino VE-500 electric standup through a G-K Backline 112. I
don't have an acoustic standup, so this is as close as I can come. It
would probably benefit from some more compression.

Sure enough, I went to have a listen and as I was listening I was
getting prepared to hear the mandolin part and recommend starting it
much earlier as just some bright but not loud chord chop accents as is
normally done with a mandolin and then I was going to suggest morphing
that into some soft mando 2-string flutter-picking to transition into
some line picking with just enough gain level to have a shimmery top end
balanced with the other instruments. Joke's on me, it wasn't there!

I'd meant to comment something after you first posted it, but I put it
off as I was busy.

Ditto on Judy's vocals, very nice and expressive as always.

I was also thinking the backing tracks might afford a bit more highs out
maybe one of them but not so much as to distract from the vocal. The
bass sound just a tiny bit odd to me at times. What did you use there?

Overall, it all sounds good and I'd like to hear it with the mandolin
player added in.

Robert,

Yep, great performance. It must be a lot of fun to work with such an excellent
singer. Back in a past life I played with a couple of guys who could just sing
the crap out of anything. It was pure joy to be on stage with them every night.

Take care,

Thanks, Gary. I (hopefully) fixed the percussion this afternoon and
sent that version (sans mandolin) off to our real mandolin player to see
what he comes up with. I'll try to blend whatever that is more
seamlessly into the mix.

The mandolin adds a frailty to the music. It pulls attention from the
nice mood up to that point. I had forgotten that I was listening for
its entry, and there it was. Mood broken.

The mandolin playing was good, but it was not quite the right thing to
add in. It pulled attention away from the vocal. I felt as if I had to
gather in my things and get ready to disembark--and not be taken away as
   I was before.

Perhaps an easy violin with sustanudo would warm and fill around the
singer for the ending and keep the mood.

My own rhythm guitar player studied with Chet Atkins, so I thought that
the percussion in your piece was picking at first. Perhaps adding a
little kick to the brush would give a feeling of travel and distance and
   riding.

I like the bass. It's in the pocket, interesting, on time, and well
played. I push the bass when it's good. Your bass is good.

Instead of a blue grass violin, perhaps a 'cello would be a
consideration. It would give a stormy wind to the ending.

Assuming you add in a 'cello. If you are careful and blend it smoothly
into the mid and low spectrum, working it in with the bass and making a
nice bowed crescendo, you'd keep the mood growing and keep us wanting to
   go on when it's over.

The singer has a grit with a close intimacy that works like a sparkle
over a good steady orchestration. The chording in your chorus works
well. The harmony gives a good progressive feeling. Generally, it's
   all good.

Your recording and mixing make this a quality presentation. Nice work.

   Cheers,
   Buzz.

So, you weren't starting to feel a little bored by then? I was afraid
the repetitive nature of the music and lack of a solo break would tire
listeners out before the end of the song.

That's the first time I ever tried to play a mandolin, so I will freely
admit that I really didn't know what I was doing. An experienced
mandolinist from Georgia was actually slated to record this track, but
it hasn't happened yet and I wanted to get some feedback in the meantime.

> Perhaps an easy violin with sustanudo would warm and fill around the
> singer for the ending and keep the mood.

Yeah, I've got Miroslav Philharmonik, if I could just figure out how to
use it with my Midi controller. I also know a decent viola player, and
I even wrote some music for her in alto clef, but I can't seem to get
her into the studio.

> My own rhythm guitar player studied with Chet Atkins, so I thought that
> the percussion in your piece was picking at first.

Studying with Chet Atkins would be such a rush. I got to play with him
(as a high school all-state jazz drummer) for a few minutes at a jazz
festival back in the mid-70s. Milt Hinton and Clark Terry were there,
too. It was like being coated in luscious chocolate.

> Perhaps adding a
>> little kick to the brush would give a feeling of travel and distance and
>> riding.

I'm a percussionist by training, so I experiment with the percussion on
a regular basis. The first version had standard brush on snare. This
is actually a little 8" frame drum with some compression, and is the
first mix I've done where there wasn't a kick of some sort. I guess I
was just trying to give it a bluegrass feel and I didn't recall there
being much of a kick presence in bluegrass. My instinct is always to go
with a kick, though.

>

Wow. Thanks. That's my primary instrument these days (because my
little trio needs bass more than it needs a drummer), but I've never
been sure if I really sound like a bassist or not. Usually when I record
bass parts for people they say things like, "Interesting. I've never
thought of that particular bass line for this song." I have a feeling I
wouldn't be much in demand as a session bassist. ;-)

I'm with you there. I love strings, especially cello and viola.

I'll pass that along to her and the lead guitarist.

SHORT: Brought in some electric guitars and f/x pedals to my

Fun stuff! I'll probably do this every year from now on, as she
progresses through gradeschool.

I recommend it to any of you who have kids/nieces/nephews who are
school-aged. Good to indoctrinate them early (I wasn't exposed to
guitars until college. If I'd had the chance to handle an electric
guitar when I was younger, I probably would've started earlier...)
