If anyone on the list voted a few weeks ago I am calling on you all once more
to vote for Katie on CBC radio3 contest.
this will be the last one as the winner will be chosen on Sept 8th. You can vote
everyday or it seems multiple times a day as long as you refresh the page. It
works for me. Not sure if the vote registers more than once a day or not.
http://radio3.cbc.ca/#/polls/?pollId=73
Scroll down to New Brunswick and she is the third one in that group.
It seems that the winner depends on how many friends you have voting so vote
often.
Thanks for all your support and I will let everyone know how this turns out.

Well, hey, old friends and new. The studio is up and running again, and in
fact, we've been in the process of going commercial (of that, more later).

We're kind of specializing in piano-vocal and small ensembles. Here's
something we knocked out last Saturday afternoon:

http://www.silkspeedmusic.com/mp3/THESWAN%2008-28-10.mp3

This is my partner, Barb Dennis, on piano, and myself on flute. It's
Saint-Saens' "The Swan," from the "Carnival of Animals."

That's a grand recording, Skip. Just what I needed on a stressful day
like today. Thanks.

A classical classic! Nice job! And I thought you were on the road

As others have written, this sounds pretty good already. A couple of minor
points to consider:

I'd like it to sound a little more articulate. Less reverb, shorter reverb
might fix that. Also, I find the piano to sound a little dark. A little more
"brightness", whatever that means in detail, might be worth to check out.
Finally, I'd cut a little in the 300 Hz region, but I know my system is a
little over the top in this range so you might discard this point. But it is
really nice to have something to review here again and it's also nice to have
this kind of music offered on this list.

Very pretty Skip, good tone on both instruments, and of course well
played! My only "criticism" would be, I'd like to hear the piano in
stereo, and about a minute+ or so more of the piece, but it sounds
quite nice as is. :)

Thanks, Robert, Pete, Wolf, Jim, Zeke, everyone who responded.

Appreciate the good words, and the critiques. All helpful, as usual.

I agree that thereıs lots that could be done with EQ (especially on the
piano). I have listened to a lot of piano recordings in the last couple
years, and Iıve discovered thereıs really quite of range of taste-dictated
choices being made, even within the narrow confines of the classical piano.
Contrary to what I believed when I was starting out with this work, there
isnıt a proper or ³received² piano sound that is universally used in ³legit²
recording work. Who knew? :)

Now, whatıs fun about this recording is that I was striving for that
natural, open-space classical sound, but I actually did it in a tiny,
bedroom-sized studio. Since Iım moving toward mostly on-location work with a
laptop rig, I wanted to see what I could do to simulate it in a much more
confined arrangement.

So the piano is a straight-up Ivory instrument (a Steinway D sampled
piano), controlled by a weighted Yamaha keyboard (a P140), with some
smoothing-out using PSP compression and EQ plugs. The flute was the tricky
part, and Iım very excited about getting this to work. Basically, I played
about 45 degrees off-axis of a TLM-103 into an RNPre. The ³secret²
ingredient was the SE reflexion filter behind the mic, which allowed me to
block out the room sound so that I could control that with a reverb plug.
Iıve used variations on this approach for rock flute, but I wasnıt sure it
would work to get a classical sound. It was a pleasant surprise.

I was also surprised to find that the TLM-103 is really the perfect flute
mic. I first tried the Rode NTK, which has been my vocal go-to mic for lots
of applications, and was alarmed by how bad it sounded. Iım not sure why,
but clearly these mics have very different EQ curves and respond to
transients differently.

The reverb was just a stock Logic Platinum Verb (I have some better ones,
but really liked the result, so....). A final bit of fairy-dust came from
using a Crysonics SpectraLive plug on the stereo out. I bought it on sale a
while back, and I was skeptical that it would do very much for me, but it
has turned out to be pretty awesome.

Thanks, guys!

Hey Skip,

Really nice. Performances are excellent. The only comment I have is that maybe
it could be a bit brighter, both flute and piano.

Good to hear from you again!

Hi everyone. I'm selling my mint never gigged Taylor T5 custom... Gold
hardware, pearl block inlays, spruce top, gloss top, back, and sides,
sunburst finish, etc, taylor hard case included. If you haven't seen/read
about the T5 line, check them out. They have a true acoustic sound with
pickup and active preamp with eq, but, the guitar also has a single coil and
a hum bucker. With a five way pickup selector switch, you can access either
pickup, or a blend. You can use the guitar direct, or, you can run it
through an acoustic amp, electric amp, or, you could use an A/B box if you
wanted a clean acoustic sound on the acoustic amp and a crunchy lead sound
on the electric amp. The action is very low, setup is amazing, the guitar
is effortless to play and feels/sounds great. I'm after more of a standard
dreadnought though so have decided to sell her.

$1749 US including shipping. plese write off list if interested. I accept
payment via pay pal and will ship to any confirmed address in the lower 48
states or Canada.

Thanks,

Cameron.

Nice tight mix...very good job! I might bring the lead vocal down
just a tad. I would also consider adding some more reverb/delay to the
lead vocal as well as the backups.

Your daughter has some mean sounding vocals! I'm thinking she's maybe
pushing it just a little too hard to get the best overall effect but
that's between you and her (or her and she <g>). I'd agree with the
opinion that a bit of reverb might soften it just a little and make it
sit better. Right now it seems a bit hard-edged to my ears.

My only other nit-pick is that I would replace the words "run away" with
"get away" just to keep the lyrics on a "single track".

I liked the background vocal thing on the end. Nice job overall!

Congrats on the successes with the other song!

Thanks Einar , Nathn and Pete.
After I put that mix up I realised it was bit harsh on the vocal. There was a
setting on the main outs that was accidentally switched on. I did a new mix and
took out the background vocals on the verses and just left them in at the end.
I put it up if you want to listen to it again.

I listened again and I think it's better but still a bit harsh. I also
noticed that the words "run away" play a larger part toward the end than
I thought. The title "Getaway" and the main phrase "run away" I find to
be kind of confusing or diffusing in a way. That's just an initial
reaction and maybe it's very trivial but it seems like a sticking point
for me.

Thanks Pete. The Title is not writen in stone yet so I will have a look at
that.
The vocal will need a bit of tweeking yet. Might get her to do it again the
next time she is home. She got a job in Halifax which is 4 hours from home
so it could be a long project. She is just getting into the writing and likes
it so there will be more to come.
Thanks for listening again.

Hi everyone. after a total sonar reinstall and JSonar reinstall, the midi
issue is now sorted via the USB interface. (the project mix midi ports
still aren't performing as they should.)

Anyways, whenever I insert dimension pro, I get a system sound but nothing
comes up. I looked with the jaws cursor and there is nothing there, it just
says dimension pro and then the start button at the bottom etc. when I try
to get to the program browser by hitting alt, shift, b, it says window not
found, hot spot failed.

I made sure that dimension pro is the active set.

Would anyone know why this is happening? If the program browser does come
up, which will happen if you go away from the dimension pro window and then
come back to it, it does say program browser, but then, I get a system sound
doink again and there is nothing no matter what I do.

Any thoughts?

This didn't happen before with any version of sonar.

Thanks,

Cameron.

Hello everyone. this problem seems to be with hsc in general, not just with
dimension pro.

I'm using hsc build 197, the latest version of jaws ten, latest version of
JSonar, and, Sonar 8.53 producer.

I tried uninstalling it, reinstalling it, and importing the latest sonar 6
and beyond sets from the hsc site. I am getting the same results though
after all of that.

Whenever I try to use an hsc set, either by hitting the command for it, or,
actually choosing the action from the sets action list, I get the same
error. It says:

Window not found, hot spot failed.

That is all it tells me. I've made sure the correct set is loaded for the
plugs I'm trying to work with, I made sure my display settings were correct,
and, I tried having automatic switching off and on and none of it made any
difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've got no soft synth access over
here.

Also, uninstalling it was not successful. The uninstall program froze so I
had to do it manually. It was the only way to get it to the point where I
could run the installer successfully.

I didn't have these issues with previous builds...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Cameron.

Hello everyone. I moved into a bigger place in early September and now have
a dedicated studio/teaching room. I am looking for tips on cost effective
sound treatment. It's a very lively room, square shaped with two medium
sized windows and hardwood floor.

I need suggestions that are non destructive as I am renting. So, I can't do
any drilling etc.

I may start by getting a large floor rug and some foam bass traps. I know
real traps and orilex make room treatment kits but they cost a pretty penny.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Maybe I could buy stuff
at home depo or lows and cut it up... but what to use for adhesive?

Thanks,

There's a variety of plans for bass traps (Google search) that use
those cardboard-y barrels, plastic garbage cans, and/or homemade
plywood boxes. Most of them are free-standing: just park 'em in the
corner, on the floor. Filled with fiberglass insulation, IIRC.

Presumably you could make some simple frames from 2" x 2"s, or some
sheets of plywood, drape cheap carpet (and/or carpet pads?) over them,
and lean 'em against the wall.

You could also get the specialized foam wedge-thingies (the acoustic
treatment) and glue 'em to sheets of plywood that are free-standing
(leaning?) against the wall.

A sofa or futon-sofa up near the wall might help as well. (I read
somewhere that a typical sitting room -- carpet, sofa, easy chairs...
-- actually is fairly acoustically good.)

Subject: hsc build 198 did not fix my issue and I am still not able to read certain things in sonar.

Hello everyone. I installed hsc build 198 this evening and it did not fix
my issue. I am still getting the window not found, hot spot failed message
whenever I try to use hsc sets with any of the soft synths included with
sonar 8.5 producer. I made sure the proper hsc set was loaded, and I also
tried picking things from the list instead of using the hsc command and I
just get the same error message.

On Sunday, I'm going to have a friend help me install a seperat partition on
my system drive that will be for sonar only. until then, is anyone else
experiencing this?

I don't get it. I'm using the latest hsc sets, latest version of jsonar,
latest version of jaws ten, all my display settings are correct, yada yada
yada... and there don't appear to be any dialogue boxes etc blocking the
dimension pro window for example, at least nothing that the virtual viewer
or jaws cursor can see.

I can see the presets box with the jaws cursor and the pc cursor in
dimension pro, rapture le, etc so why doesn't the virtual mouse click that
hsc does work?

Also, for some reason, jaws is not reading things in lists and it's not
reading page tabs in dialogue boxes etc. it just says tab, when it should
say general or drivers etc.

This is only happening in sonar though, even after a total reinstall of
everything.

Anyone have any explanations or further suggestions?

This happens with both JSonar and the latest version of ct. I've tried
both.

Thanks,

Cameron.

Einar evidently has a virus. I've e-mailed him to check into it.
