Dear UMTIA members:

We are sharing with you the announcement of an event that may be of
interest to the interpreting community. Dr. Erik Camayd-Freixas will
be in Minnesota on October 19th. If any of you are interested in
hearing him, please refer to the information in the following
announcement.

Regards
Elisa Gustafson
UMTIA Membership Director

Jewish Community Action presents:
Dr. Erik Camayd-Freixas
"Worksite Raids vs. Human Rights: The Struggle for Justice in
America's War on Immigration" Followed by a Panel of Respondents

Sunday, October 19th 7:00-9:00pm
Temple of Aaron
616 Mississippi River Blvd, St. Paul

Dr. Camayd was one of 16 interpreters at the hearings in Iowa after
Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted the largest single-site
immigration raid in U.S. history, at AgriProcessors, Inc. He made
international headlines with his essay, "Interpreting after the
Largest ICE Raid in U.S. History: A Personal Account," denouncing the
criminalization of workers, current immigration enforcement tactics,
and the politics of intolerance.
Dr. Camayd is Professor of Latin American Literature and Director of
the Translation & Interpretation Program at Florida International
University. He has trained more than 3,000 interpreters representing
over 40 different languages and has interpreted internationally for
eight different heads of state, as well as for Pope Benedict XVI.

$15 suggested donation, to be donated to Postville families affected
by the raid.
