Good Evening,
as we did fonefood and some other services last year, we worked quite
a bit with the device atlas ruby lib. To make it slightly less painful
we bundled all the device atlas stuff we had into a plugin. We have
released it into the wild at github.com since a few days. If anyone
finds it useful, feel free to drop me a line.

As some of you already know, I'm developing the range of mobile design resources available online. One thing that I think would be really useful to designers would be an online wiki with information about best practices and tips for designing applications and web pages for mobile devices. If you've got some tips or ideas on UI design of related topics, feel free to post it on our Mobile Design wiki - I've got a few 5800s and CS4s here on my desk, if what you put online is good I'd be more than happy to send it over to you!
Check out what else we've got online, including our recently launched User Experience Programme.
Hello Mobile Design UK - the judges have completed their deliberations and we've
announced the short-list finalists for the 2009 MEX Mobile User Experience
Awards.
You can see the nominees and read all about the judges and judging criteria at:
http://www.mobileuserexperience.com/?p=705
The winners, including the overall MEX Mobile User Experience Innovator of the
Year, will be announced at a special evening reception on 19th May, hosted at
the 1st night of the international MEX Mobile User Experience Conference in
London (http://www.pmn.co.uk/mex/ - a couple of places left if you still want to
book, GBP 1499).
Keep an eye out for the winner's announcement on the 19th - we'll post it on the
MEX blog.
Thanks to all of you who entered. The contest had a fanastic response and we
were delighted to receive 47 entries in total, showcasing some of the best
examples of mobile user experience.
All of the entries will remain online, complete with videos, PDFs and detailed
explanations to provide an ongoing reference for user-centred design in the
mobile business. You can review the complete entry gallery, including those
from the 2008 contest, at:
http://www.mobileuserexperience.com/mexdesign/
A big thank you to Nuance, Immersion and DCKTN for sponsoring. It is their
support which enables us to hold the Awards each year and keep entry completely
free.
Looking forward to seeing all the new innovations in the 2010 MEX Awards!
Just a quick note to remind the Mobile Design community that today is the last
day for submitting entries to the 2009 MEX Mobile User Experience Awards.
Deadline is 23:00 GMT today, Friday 8th May.
All are welcome - from early concepts to commercial products - and entering is

The call for participation has just been announced for EuroIA, the fifth European Information Architecture Summit, which is due to talk place in Copenhagen on 25-26 September.
This year the focus is 'Beyond Structure': Websites have moved to a new level. Any random page can be accessed from Google. Pages themselves may consist of information from many sources. And even the concept of a “page” is changing thanks to new backend technologies. In other words, we’ve moved beyond the traditional sitemap and into a new and exciting era of web development.
The submission deadline date for case studies, presentations and panels is May 17th 2009 24:00 CET (12 am).
As the new UK country ambassador for EuroIA, it's my responsibility to ensure that the UK is well represented at the summit in terms of both speakers and attendees. Please don't let me down! :-)
(And if you have any queries about the conference, please drop me a line.)
Hi,
I'm looking for someone to help with planning/designing the UI of quite a
complex mobile learning tool. You need plenty of experience in mobile usability
and interface design as this is mainly a functional design brief, not so much a
visual feast. IA skills definitely required.
The platform is FlashLite 2.1, so some experience with that would be useful but
not essential. No coding required at all.
We're expecting somewhere around 1-2 weeks' work, but the project will be
ongoing for a while, so it won't be all in one chunk. We're based near Brighton
and require face-to-face meetings here and in London, so only people from the
area please (this can't be done remotely, sorry). Prestigious client,
interesting project.
Thanks,
Wolf.
Hello,
I'm posting this on behalf of Marek as Yahoo Groups is acting up.

Here's the link I mentioned on Wednesday for the MEX Awards:
http://www.mobileuserexperience.com/mexdesign/
You can enter online or browse/vote on all the existing entries in the
gallery.
The challenge is to show an example of truly user-centred mobile
design. It can be anything you like: a UI concept, an application, a
handset design...the only requirement is that it demonstrate a clear
link between user needs and the experience you've created.
The contest is open to all, with categories for students, freelancers,
professionals and companies.
The deadline is 8th May 2009 at 23:00 GMT.
It is completely free to enter and all entries are showcased in an
online gallery where users can browse, comment and vote.
An independent judging panel will decide the final winners.
The Awards will be presented at a special evening reception on the
first night of the MEX Conference, 19th May, in London. It is
attended by 100 of the mobile industry's top executives and last year
was covered for TV by Reuters
(http://www.reuters.com/news/video?videoId=83494&videoChannel=6

Good luck!

Thanks to Bryan, Stephanie and Priya for organising a great event on Wednesday
and to Seren for being such accomodating hosts.
I'm delighted to announce the judging panel of Bryan, Stephanie, Priya and Oznur
(from Seren) have decided the winner of the MEX scholarship place to attend the
5th annual MEX Mobile User Experience conference on 19th - 20th May
(www.pmn.co.uk/mex/).
We asked: "What is the biggest challenge faced by designers trying to improve
the mobile user experience?"
The winning answer was:
"The awareness in knowing what is actually possible and not to assume that what
has been created in the past sets some form of rules which they should abide by.
Ask questions and don't be just a `designer'; be aware of other people's roles
and make the most of them."
-- Antony Ribot, Ribot (www.ribot.co.uk)
Congratulations to Antony, who wins a fully funded place to attend MEX.
You can read all of the other answers - which I personally found to be
absolutely fascinating by virtue of their variety - in this blog post:

Thanks to everyone else who entered. I very much hope some of you will join us
at MEX on 19th - 20th May. We currently have just 21 places remaining out of
100, so please book as soon as possible to guarantee your seat:

Tickets are priced at GBP 1499 for the 2 days.

I second that, i think we need to keep this on "bring your beauty and
laptop" type of thing. The idea would be to share and learn without to
much structure. I was thiking that we should go for the weekend
24,25th april at earliest, since I think most of us needs some heads
up for time. would that be suitable?

I'm flexible. Easter weekend is fine, as are most others. :)
Personally, I'd like to see ad-hoc 'events/workshops' where things aren't really planned and the agenda is set the agenda by whoever shows up on the day, with possibly a guiding theme (ie: iPhone, gestures, location, etc). If these prove to be popular then perhaps we could look at something more formal, but to kick things off I'd suggest that we just keep things simple.
That said, if anybody knows of a nice venue (pub, school, club, etc) that wouldn't mind a bunch of designers (and design-minded developers) geeking out for a few hours on a weekend afternoon... ?
A projector would definitely be very handy.

What about this coming Saturday? Any suggestions for where we'd go that would have free wi-fi? Oh. We'd need a projector and white wall or screen too. (or make that optional) Anyone have a pico projector they like? ;)
It sounds like a 'camp'--for which we might want to rent a room, though that would require far more complicated operations...

Good evening, talking offline to people from this list, it seems that we would like to make something small but practical as a complement to the great talks and evenings we have. Hi fellow mobile designers,
I want to make sure everybody knows about Design For Mobile, the only
North American conference focused on mobile design, user experience,
user research, and usability. It's a great learning opportunity and a
great networking opportunity. You'll get some of the latest research
affecting how you design mobile sites or services, some cutting edge
thinking, and plenty to make you go "hmm".
Early Bird deadline is March 7!

In a week or two I'm going to be opening up a design portal within Forum Nokia,
which
will have all the design resources for you under one roof, so to speak.
Until then, you can find examples of what others have done here at the Mobile
Design
Showcase (I'd love to see more examples of good stuff so if you see anything,
let me
know) here:
http://www.forum.nokia.com/Resources_and_Information/Explore/Design_and_Media/De
sign_Gallery/
As Paul noted before (thanks Paul!) you can find design related information
regarding
documentation here:
http://www.forum.nokia.com/Resources_and_Information/Explore/Design_and_Media/
And the community discussion board is at the moment very small but I'm trying to
grow it
more here: http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=192
I'll be adding a way lot more stuff in the near future, so keep an eye peeled :)
