Hi
I'm a designer for chat communities on mobile, working for platforms
like SMS, WAP, Symbian and J2ME. I'm looking for a software that can
be used to generate (medium-fidelity) navigation flows and also
generate test cases automatically.
I've tried using Steeltrace Enterprise v4.20 but though it's a good
software for project management, bug tracking, change management, and
QA it's pretty basic as a design tool.
Has anyone used a software that can give the flexibility of Visio for
creating design flows, design screen wireframes and also generate test
cases?
Thanks,
Soo

Hi,

This is Ashish and I work as an Information Architect in India.
Primararily I had worked on web applications from concept design to
wireframming.

May be soon, I need to work for some clients for mobile applications
for which I need to know where can I start with.

I beleive some people here are the pioneers in this domain, thus there
  guidance would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

I will be giving a workshop on Designing for Mobile this year at WebVisions.
This
workshop is intended to bridge the gap, introducing traditional and interactive
designers
into the burgeoning field of mobile design. See the workshop details below:

Designing for Mobile: Bringing Design Down to Size?
workshop cost: $225

Thursday, July 20, 9:30 am – 1:00 pm?
Category: Mobile/iTV/PDA

Long promised and way overdue, mobile technology is finally moving beyond simply
making telephone calls to a being a fundamental of our technology-infused lives.
In fact
mobile is poised to revolutionize the web as we know it.

But beyond the hype, rumors and billions of investment dollars in the mobile
industry lies
a fairly simple concept: mobile devices, which first connected us with people,
can now
connect us with information, anytime or anywhere.

With mobile devices outnumbering personal computers 3-to-1 and networks
approaching
broadband speeds, it is inevitable that we will see a convergence of the web and
mobile.
But what will this paradigm shift look like, and what does it mean to us?

Unfortunately mobile is a difficult arena to enter, certainly unlike the web
where simple
experimentation can often create results, mobile requires understanding of it's
present
politics, patience of legacy and diverse systems and true people-centered
thinking.
In this workshop we will help you get mobile, the basic landscape of the
technology, the
differences of the various solutions as well as some samples uses and
techniques.

In this workshop you will learn:
- The fundamentals of the Mobile Ecosystem
- About how Mobile is Transforming the Web
- Importance of People-centered Mobile Solutions
- How to create a Mobile Strategy
- The Hierarchy of the Mobile Experience
- The importance of Mobile information architecture
- Tips & Tricks for Designing for Small Screens
- Tips & Tricks for Developing for the Mobile Web

http://www.webvisionsevent.com/schedule/detail/?evtloc=mobile_web

I hope to see you there!

Timo & Jon,

I'm not sure if the event planners are planning on doing a podcast or not. I probably won't make the entire workshop presentation available. But I will be try to put together some sort of overview after the event for those you couldn't attend.

And Timo, sorry to hear your team, add Jan Ulrich being booted from the Tour = not a good summer for Germany :(

Hi All

I'll start by introducing myself. My name is Vince and I have a keen interest in the mobile web and have had so for a few years now.
I have not built anything on it yet but now have a couple of projects I am working on that will when finished will be mobile ready.

I am a partner in Southbourne Internet  (SoNet) a new media agency, and we run our development blog at SoNet Journal  my main job function with SoNet is web project author and SEO.
As the market has been moving on we are now looking at mobile web design more seriously. I am particularly interested in mSEO optimisation on the mobile web platform and finding the best way forward.

Recently I opened a small site M3W  that will feature news and discussion relating to the mobile web.  It is a blog that also features the latest news regarding mobile technologies. It is still very new and it is open to all. I have a lot of work to dow ith it yet and want it to be a good piece for the community.

I'm here to learn and discuss as much as the next person as we tackle this up-and-coming technology.

Hello,

I found this group through a post by Brian Fling over at
blueflavor.com. I am an independant mobile website developer and I'm
building a site called Wampad at http://wampad.com.

I am a web applications programmer by nature and profession and web
designer by necessity. I have 10 years experience in building and
maintaining an enterprise web infrastructure.

The site I'm building started as a way for me to make better use of my
phones browser during my son's football practices. After playing with
it, I started expanding it past what I needed so I purchased a domain
name and some space to see if I could make it into something more then
a pet project.

I'm a designer from India, and am working on a handheld device (not a

not want to invest too much time in creating icons. I was wondering if
an icon library were available someplace on the Internet for free/

Responses/ Advice/ Links would be much appreciated.

I'd highly recommend using an royalty-free icon libraries like:

Hi

I'm curious to know how you design mobile phone interfaces. Do you
conceptualize on photoshop first, and then make interactive flash
prototypes?

Do you conceptualize based on themes, or are initial concepts restricted
to placeholders and navigation possibilities? How do you include
multiple theme selection in a final demonstration?. And given the myriad
features/ tasks, are there any tools to help you weave it all together?

For me, my approach completely depends on the target platform. For example, how I would design for a WAP deck is completely different than how I would do a BREW or J2ME app.

Typically I start out a couple of sketches, diagraming the primary areas of interaction and link them to the outcome, just like a storyboard. I try to prototype on paper as much as possible before heading to the computer. This is helpful in determining both your navigation schema as well as work out your albeit limited but crucial information design.

I take to assume that when you say theme, you mean a specific design style or comp (a theme in mobile typically refers to the customizable device UI). To develop a comp for J2ME or BREW I use Photoshop, Flash Lite: Flash (obviously), and for WAP I go straight to HTML and use CSS as my design tool. And I find that for any flavor of Game, Flash is a good place to start. I'll present a few different comps side by side just as I would any other visual design. I try to get down to one design before I move forward with fleshing out a prototype.

For anything other than Games, HTML is a great place to create prototypes. You can pass around for viewing on a desktop or mobile device. You can mimic the interaction and do some early usability feedback sessions.

As to helping you put everything together and balancing the restrictions of the device. My advice is when designing for mobile, you need to ignore the restrictions as much as possible, especially during the early phases. Don't let the limitations of the device hinder your creativity. Design a good interface in whatever tool you feel the most comfortable in. And test it, even if it is just co-workers, friends and family, it doesn't matter. The further you depart for convention, the more you should test it.

Start with low level structural deliverables focused on how you are solving the problem. Then gradually add more subjective design elements to give it an attractive shine. Testing it all along the way.

I'm currently working on a device where for cost reasons the display
technology is far behind in resolution compared to the in-market mobile

I'm debating on how to accurately represent the end feel of the icons

Sounds like a big project, you might consider guru.com or similar
service to find a developer who specializes in those areas.

In an attempt to improve the mobile web experience, CSS Design students in the
Graphics
Technology Program at Valencia Community College are conducting a survey to help
gather information about how the public uses the web with mobile devices. With
the
steady increase in the use of mobile devices (there are three times as many
mobile phones
as PC's worldwide!), we are certain that responses from this survey will allow
us to better
understand various aspects that affect the way we design and develop web sites
for mobile
devices.

Please take a moment to answer questions in this brief survey. Prior to the end
of the
semester we will share the results of this survey with the public.

To take the survey visit:
http://CTLSilhouette.wsu.edu/surveys/ZS54129

We encourage you to share this survey with others. Thanks in advance for your
time!

Unfortunately, this group will be far from typical. We are not "the
public", and your results will not be valid. Further, the carrier
question is not compatible with the location question.

Barbara,
Thanks for the feedback.

Although you may not feel you are part of the public - you are, even if you are
a subject
matter expert. Trust me I am working on releasing this to a variety of locations
so that we
recieve a mass response from the public (and not just subject matter experts),
thus far this
includes:

Posting in the public news on www.stylegala.com

Posting in the mobile web yahoo group

It has been posted in a campus wide email at Valencia Community College
(50,000+)

I sent it to the digital media staff at UCF and I plan to see if I can also get
it sent out
campus wide there.

I've posted it on our graphics program blog.

I've sent the link/announcement out to several professionals that are very
involved in
educating the design community about mobile web.

Students will be sending this message out to friends, family, etc.

One student has posted this in his myspace account (as much as I hate myspace,
it is very
popular these days and will probably receive a lot of response from those users)

I plan to look into other ways to publicize this such as newspapers, news web
sites, etc.

I am open to hearing any other ideas to get a more wide response from users. I
would
definitely like to also target users in other locations than the US so whatever
ideas you
guys have in in publicizing this are certainly welcomed.

Thanks again for your input!
Amanda
