I'd welcome member feedback on what you would
like to see in the News feature, particularly the
"News Clipper" section which can be tailored to search
for recent news on practically any club-related
subject of interest. I think it makes sense to make
extensive use of the "News Clipper", this being a
broad-interest club - what do members think?

I'm also
considering picking a few related stocks to watch, again
member feedback would be welcome.

- VP
First off, many thanks for the invite to this
club. I am in the process of building a web site for
just this purpose, albeit for automobiles though -
http://www.internetforcars.com Also, webforcars.com will get you
there too. I
hope to develop it more to offer the latest news,
technical info, etc. on the revolving wireless internet
revolution.

Shaman forgot to mention a very important aspect
concerning Metricom's service even though he gave the links.
They will be offering 128kbps mobile service come this
summer. I am currently involved in their beta trial in
Houston right now. I have to say that it is damn fast! I
average around 170k speeds with peaks up to +200kbps.
That difference is enough for me to convince everyone
I know to get it when it becomes available. And
this service is not over a tiny phone display either!
It is full blown internet access. Shaman gave the
link to the modem attached to my laptop. They will be
offering PCMCIA modems later in the summer.

I hope
I don't come off as a spammer, but when you can be
one of the first people in the WORLD to try out
something as this, it can make you a little giddy. I used
to work for AT&T Wireless, so I can assure you that
CDPD will not even compare to Metricom's
service.

Look forward to the development of this
board!

Ti
VP and All:

Thank you for your
welcome.

You are correct that my interest is not that
significant...

I will try to keep my posts informational in
nature. My most significant interest is in shareing what
I feel is truely " mobile internet" in nature. What
better place than the Mobile Internet World Club.

To preface, I'm not a tech type. That said, I do see
the potential for many types of mobile access to the
internet, of which the company I wish to introduce is but
one. However, I think that in the next six to nine
months it will become a potentially large
one.

The company is Metricom
(MCOM):

http://www.metricom.com/

They are currently in three major
markets in the USA.
San Francisco, Washington DC and Seattle Washington.
They produce a modem that attaches to a laptop to give
full screen, remote and completely mobile access to
the internet within their market areas. They have
begun deployment of their network in 12 additional
major US cities and should have the service up and
running by late summer 2000. An additional 9 major cities
are scheduled for early 2001 and 25 more in summer
2001. The following link has some deployment

give more info, without knowing if
this is the kind of information this club is really
seeking. I would suppose that folks with Palm or telcom
interests would also feel the desire to complement the
positive aspects of those technologies as well. For now
I'll end and await any questions.

PS As you
might guess, there are several Clubs and message boards
that follow Metricom and if there is interest, I could
provide more links. Comments welcome.

Best to

OK, so there is some functionality I wasn't aware
of available to club founders.

I will be
exploring the News area of the club and tailoring it as
best I can. Of course any tips/advice/requests would
be welcome.

tregas, I think I now know what
you mean!!! Thanks for bringing it
up.

messages2you, I hope you are happy you got a cheap
advertisement for your club. Some might see it as spam, but I
find it acceptable though rude. "The founder sent me
an invitation" - so what is your point? Is that
supposed to justify your long message promoting your
club?

As for me, well maybe I needed a little more than 8
days after all.

- VP

Welcome to the club, Shaman.

You've put me
on the spot here. I'm still waivering. It's a grey
area. Hmmm.

OK, I've decided you have a vested
interest, but probably not that
significant...

Trusting that your intentions are good, you may post the
info :-)

- VP

get your FREE Internet

tregas, welcome.

I'm not sure exactly what
you mean. Do you mean a separate moderated Usenet
newsgroup or suchlike? That could be done, but I don't have
time to take care of it myself, and anyway I
personally don't see a need for it. Members are free to post
industry news items as it is right here, and inappropriate
messages will be removed at my discretion.

You can
also get plenty of industry news through the club
links, btw.

I would have thought there is enough
in the message board + club links to cater for
"industry news" needs, but I'm all ears....

-

I am pleased to have been invited to this club
and am eager to participate, but there seems to be
something missing. Where's the industry news? I am assuming
that the point is that the members make the site.
Where do we post? Here? Should there not be a moderated
BB for news only?

Just curious :)
Thanks for the invitation to join.

No
spam intended here:

I have been following, and
have stock in a company that is deploying a
wireless/mobile internet access network in the Unitd States using
a modem for both laptops/Palms as well as home use.
It deploys using WAPS and poletop transmitters to
connect to the internet. I'm surprised that few know
about it and perhaps as a member of this club, I can
put other members in touch with links with further
information.

If contact_vp doesn't consider this as spam, then
let me know, and I'll put more info on the tech and
the company on the club message board.

Shaman
I was thinking it would be great to be able to
monitor the developments in wireless without having to
watch my stock price action. (can be ohhhhh so painful
sometimes) This is perfect! Thanks for the invite.
uk_opportunities, welcome to the club.

I removed your post as it was a
blatant commercial post. A repeat offence will have you removed.

- VP
You are very welcome Robert - and I'm glad you
like the concept :-)

A big welcome too to all
the other new members who have joined since my last
post - 73 of you all told, I think.

I would
welcome any suggestions on ways to improve this club,
though honestly so far I personally like the way it is
progressing just the way it is.

I should though take
this opportunity to inform members that blatant
commercial posts will not be tolerated (they will be
removed), and repeat offenders will be removed from the
club. Discrete advertising will be tolerated, but only
as part of the message signature. eg. my signature
below is just about acceptable :-)

-

I just bought a Samsung SCH 3500 with Sprint Wireless web Service. I intend to
buy the connection kit for my PALM IIIx soon. At this point I surf on the
phone...very cool!!!!!
No, the location information will not be used in
any of the current technologies to make hand-off
decisions. Of course this could change in the
future.

Also, E911 is mandated by the FCC, not the FDA (Food
and Drug Administration).

As for what goes on
during a hand-off, the details depend on the technology.
Hi all,
I am not sure if this place is right
to talk about the stuff that I am going to talk
about.

Does anyone know if location information of the mobile
devices (I am talking about the cellular systems) is used
for handing off the calls by any of the present
technology? I am sure they are developing some technology
(AoA,ToA etc.) for comliance with the E911 by FDA. So is
any of this already used somewhere or researched?

And could anyone give me some info as to where I can
find info abt what goes on in the MSC (mobile
switching centers) whenever there is a handoff.

I am
sorry if this is not the place for such
questions.

Thanks!!

Vikx
Hi,
Thank you for inviting me to the Mobile
Internet World(MIW). Already there seems to be lot of
interest groups evolving under this club.

I am
looking forward to using this club as a medium to collect
information on Internet to SMS. I am specifically looking for
web based SMS send pages, preferably the ones
provided by the mobile phone operators themselves. Of
particular interest are countries in Europe, Far East, Japan
& Australia.

I am also interested in WAP,
iMode. But I must admit I am a ignoramus in them.
Anybody out here to enlighten me or point me in the right
direction?

May MIW be a learning experience to all.
I have used a Palm VII since they came out in NY last July. I had a friend pick
one up for me there.

I love the PVII. I have recomended it to several of
my coworkers.
Well I rarely use my Palm IIIx and a modem, but
technically I do some surfing using AvantGo and downloading
pages into my Palm. I actually use my Qualcomm phone to
surf more. We don't have Palm VIIs here in Canada
yet!

Cheers,

Nick
I'm looking forward to following the discussions
on this forum. I have been using AvantGo on the Palm
for quite some time and love always having that
pocket full of the latest info "clipped" from the web.
My thrill for yesterday was to find that they have
released the software for my Macintosh. As a web designer
I am multi-platform, but I find I still prefer my
Mac when given a choice.

I noticed when
installing the new AvantGo software that they have enabled
it for active on-going connection to the net. I
guess it is time for me to finally buy that sleek
little modem for my Palm (the V).

Jim
Gibson
jim@...
www.gibsondesign.com
Thank you for that kind welcome - I look forward
to contributing and learning from the other
members.

Just a quick comment on your statement, "I am not sure
mobile devices will replace the PC, for a good while yet
at least". I don't think the mobile devices will
ever really replace the PC because they are two
completely different beasts (like wondering if the radio
might replace the tv I think). But here in Europe at
least the projections are that the WAP enabled mobile
phone will very quickly overtake the number of PCs
connected to the internet (in the next couple of
years).

-Jim.
Hi

It's good to be here. Hope we can have
great discussions on mobile computing and related
technologies especially in WAP.

I am particularly
interested/doing research in implementing SET(Secure Electronic
Transactions) on the WAP platform.

Have you heard any
of such developments ?
Or is there another
version of SET protocols specifically for WAP platforms
?

Regards

webstar
A big welcome to Jim (alias jcorbett1, in
Ireland) to this new club. Judging from your posts in
another club I founded (Globalization), I have no doubt
you will be making valuable contributions here too -
I look forward to them.

I started this club
because I want to learn about and keep up to date with
developments in the "mobile" Internet world. I am not sure
mobile devices will replace the PC, for a good while yet
at least, but it seems to me to be an area set for
really spectacular growth.

How it will all pay
for itself is yet to be seen, since fitting
advertising on to micro-screens is not very feasible, as
pointed out in this article:
