We are aware that the Yahoo! Groups site was intermittently unavailable for a
few hours on Saturday morning and again for approximately one hour this morning.
As a result of this downtime, some accounts have been temporarily disabled by
being put into auto-responder status. We are currently working on re-enabling
those accounts.
We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience. Our engineering
team is working to get this issue fully resolved as quickly as possible. We’ll
post updates as they are available.

Our engineers have identified the root cause for this issue, and we will be
conducting hardware maintenance from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM today, 12/3, to resolve
it. During this time, some groups will be unavailable for viewing, but no
messages will be lost and users will continue to be able to post via email.
It's my pleasure to introduce the all new Groups blog:
http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/
I encourage you to go check it out and let us know what you think by posting in
the comments section.
I look forward to seeing you there!

Below are known issues that may be affecting some Groups users:
Calendar Reminders (current forecast: scattered showers with clear skies in the
forecast)
We are aware that some groups are still experiencing issues with calendar
reminders not being sent. The Calendar Team now believes this issue is related
to Day Light Savings Time and is currently working to correct this within all
groups. I’ll post an update to confirm when this process is complete. In the
meantime, we appreciate your patience.
Again, one thing to be aware of is that if someone posts an event to the
calendar who is on moderation status, a reminder won’t be sent.
Delivery Issues with Centurytel.net Addresses (current forecast: stormy)
We’ve seen reports that Yahoo! Groups email sent by members with
Centurytel.net mail accounts is not being delivered. We have confirmed that
Centurytel.net is dropping, or failing to deliver Y! Groups email. We sincerely
apologize that you are experiencing this issue unfortunately it’s not
something we can control. This is not a Yahoo! issue but an issue with how
Centurytel.net is handling email from Yahoo! Groups.
We are currently trying to contact the administrators at CenturyTel to work to
correct this problem; however, they have not returned our calls or emails. If
you are a CenturyTel customer and are able to reach them, please ask their
administrators to contact our technical team by sending an email to:
ygmailadmin-owner@yahoogroups.com.
If you have any questions or concerns please let us know by contacting Customer
Care at:

With only four days left in 2007 I wanted to take the opportunity thank all of
you for your hard work, dedication, and help to make 2007 another great year for
Yahoo! Groups!
2007 marked a major shift for Yahoo! Groups; we embraced the colossal potential
that lies within all of the wonderful communities you have built. The priority
of Groups has significantly increased within the company and we have turned our
focus to reinforcing the infrastructure (or backend) that the Groups product is
built on. We’ve also spent a lot of time developing enhancements and new
functionality that we’ve heard many of you ask for.

functionality that we’ve heard many of you ask for. Below are some of the
significant highlights from 2007:
- The Groups team has grown considerably (almost doubled) in the last few
months which equates to significantly more resource
- We made major changes to our backend systems to make sure Groups mail gets
through more quickly and reliably.
- We introduced the Groups Beta which offers enhanced customization and
moderation functionality (which we’ll continue working on in 2008).
- We introduced several new tools and enhancements to support the growing
Groups community, including:
- Launching the new & improved Moderator Central Group which keeps new &
experienced moderators looped in on the latest Yahoo! Groups news & provides
an environment for moderators to connect with one another to ask questions,
share advice, & find resources.
- Revamped the Groups Blog offering readers greater ease to post comments
(eliminating the need to sign in with a Yahoo! ID), greater ease to subscribe to
an RSS feed (to be automatically notified of new posts), a more clean &
organized layout, and enhanced search capabilities.
- We also added a link to the blog on every Groups page (in the upper right
hand corner) to make it more accessible to members & moderators.
- We introduced the first Groups Podcast (which we plan to continue in 2008)
- We launched the first ever Groups Moderator Town Hall events which provides
moderators with an opportunity to meet & engage with the Groups team as well as
one other (stay tuned for events planned in 2008).
- We’ve introduced The Best of pages to highlight some of the finest Y!
Groups as well as create a great starting point for people who are searching for
groups on specific topics or those looking to discover new groups.
- As of November 1st, Yahoo! Groups has over 109 million members across 8.8
million groups!
- The largest Yahoo! Group, FlyLadyMentors, exceeded 450,000 members (way to
go FlyLady)!
I am extremely excited for all of the great things we have planned in 2008 and I
can’t wait to share what we have in store for you!
Thanks once again for helping to make 2007 a spectacular year. We hope you’ll
continue to share your suggestions and constructive comments via the Customer
Care web form or here on the team blog so we can celebrate even more
accomplishments in 2008!

You’ve worked hard to build a great group; you want to protect that
investment, right? One way to ensure that your group and its members are
protected is to assign a co-owner, or two.
Appointing a co-owner is not something you should take lightly, since an owner
has access to member information, can change group settings, and can even delete
a group. You may decide that just appointing moderators to help with
administrative tasks is a better choice for your group. But in cases where you
have the trust and fellowship of a moderator or a strong group member, opting to
appoint the person co-owner of your group is a natural progression in the
person’s relationship to the group. And should a situation arise where you
can’t or don’t want to be responsible for your group anymore, the co-owner
can easily assume full ownership of it.
To make another member the group co-owner:
1. Go to the Members area of your group
2. Click the Edit Membership link next to the member you want to promote.
3. Click the Change to Owner link.
4. Confirm your change by clicking the Make Owner button.
Do you co-own or co-moderate your group? Or have you decided not to share
ownership responsibilities? Share with us by commenting below.

The Yahoo! Groups team in India organized and conducted its second Moderators
Union in Bangalore on Saturday, January 12 at the Taj Residency. This event
provides the team an opportunity to listen to moderator feedback and suggestions
for continued improvement of the product as well as gives Yahoo! a venue for
updating moderators on the latest Groups news. These moderators are the voice of
their respective groups and this type of event helps Yahoo! to better understand
the needs of the broader Groups community in India. Twenty two moderators
attended the event, joining us from Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Madurai and
Chennai.

There have been several posts inquiring how members should work with 3rd party
websites; below are some clarifications based on the Groups Guidelines that
every Y! user should adhere to when dealing with 3rd party sites (please note
that Groups Guidelines are tied to Yahoo’s general Terms of Service and should
be followed by all Groups users and moderators):
- If you are considering providing your Y! username and password to a 3rd party
site which stores that information on their own site, please carefully consider
the risks before doing so. Giving access to a 3rd party can be very unsafe as
the 3rd party site can access your Yahoo account as if it was you accessing your
own account. For example, they could access your address book and send emails
to your friends, change your account settings, or gain access to your personal
information. Under Section 5 of the Yahoo! Terms of Service “You are
responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of the password and account and
are fully responsible for all activities that occur under your password or
account.” For more information please also refer to section 5 of Yahoo's Terms
of Service: http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/utos/utos-173.html
- Group Moderators have the responsibility and the right to enforce their own
membership guidelines for their group. The guidelines can relate to how group
members deal with or interact with 3rd party websites. If a member is part of a
3rd party website in which the site accesses the group content using the
member's login information and/or the user’s email and then makes this content
available to other users, this behavior could put them at risk of having their
membership to the group revoked by the moderator or for having their Yahoo!
account closed entirely for a TOS violation. Moderators have the right to
protect their group's content along with the privacy of their members and can
and should enforce this at their individual group level. For more information,
please refer to section 11 of the Groups Guidelines:
http://groups.yahoo.com/local/guidelines.html, section12 of Yahoo’s Terms of
Service: http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/utos/utos-173.html and
privacy/security information: http://security.yahoo.com/article_privacy.html.
Groups owners and moderators should take every opportunity to protect their
group members' privacy and integrity of the Groups community and as such,
Yahoo’s Terms of Service and Groups Guidelines should be referred to when
dealing with all situations including 3rd party websites.
Thanks,
Groups Team
For a limited time, we're inviting Moderators to participate in a Yahoo! Groups
Research Panel and have an opportunity to help shape the future of the Yahoo!
Groups product. Members in this panel will be invited to attend a two-day
session in Sunnyvale, CA (travel expenses paid by Yahoo!) and participate in
monthly conference calls for a 12 month period. Members in this panel will
provide feedback on product changes and offer suggestions on how to make Groups
better.
Please take a few minutes to complete the brief survey below if you are
interested in participating:
http://surveylink.yahoo.com/wix/p4669131.aspx
We will contact you if you meet the requirements of our research project.
Thanks,

We'd like to improve the database feature and would love your feedback. We've
created the survey below to better understand your priorities and ideas:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=v6GubtvNJtSYm_2fTJErjKKw_3d_3d
The survey should only take about 2 minutes to complete. We hope folks with any
interest in this feature will share their feedback there.
Thank you!
- Groups Team
P.S. We've incorporated a bunch of ideas from the suggestion board in the
survey. Thanks to all who contributed there. Please keep the ideas coming:
http://suggestions.yahoo.com/?prop=groups
Over the years we’ve received a great deal of feedback from Yahoo! Group
members, that while they love the groups they are currently members of, it's
often very difficult for them to discover other relevant groups that they might
also be interested in joining. In response to this feedback, the Yahoo! Groups
team is testing a new feature that will make this process easier and surface
recommended groups based on common members between groups. These recommendations
will appear in the right hand column of Groups emails.
To read more please visit the Groups blog:

please do so on the blog.

We are aware that some Groups users may currently be experiencing site slowness
when accessing the Groups site. Our engineering team is currently investigating
this issue and working to resolve it as quickly as possible.
Please look to the Groups blog for updates:

Thank you for your patience,
Jami
Groups Community Manager
I am sure you will all be happy to learn that we've completed the test phase of
the Related Groups feature. This means that “Related Groups” are currently
no longer appearing in the right hand column of Groups emails.
The results are in
As mentioned in the original post on this topic, we were testing a concept that
we believed would address a concern we have heard from Groups users, members
specifically, that while they love the groups they are currently members of,
it's often very difficult to discover other relevant groups that they might also
be interested in joining. As Leonard mentioned in his update to my original
post, our goal with this test was to learn whether the feature is useful for
Yahoo! Groups users. If we found that the feature was useful, we would want to
invest more into it. If we found that it was not useful, we would want to remove
it or improve it. The results are in and we found that the members who received
“Related Groups” in their group emails did indeed discover other relevant
groups that they were interested in joining. As a matter of fact, the member
uptake of this feature far surpassed our expectations (meaning that an
overwhelming number of Groups members subscribed to new groups they learned
about in their group emails).
What does that mean?
Well, this means that we've validated our belief that this would be a great way
for Groups users to discover new groups. This also means that we’ll be
investing more into this feature. Before you get upset, please hear me out,
there were some other learnings that I wish to share as well.
As we've assured all along, we have been reading all of the comments, feedback,
and suggestions you've shared with us here on the blog, on the Groups Suggestion
Board, on the Moderator Central Message Boards, and in the various groups about
Groups. We are full aware of the concerns some of you have and the last thing we
want to do is implement a feature that is contrary to your group guidelines or
that would cause any unnecessary disruption. We realize that so many of you have
invested a great deal of time, energy, and a devotion to your groups and we are
extremely grateful for that.
Based on your feedback, here are some things that we will be changing in the
release of this feature (which won’t be for some time, and we’ll give you
advance notice):
- Provide a way for Groups owners and moderators opt out, allowing them to
decide what will work for their group, or not
- Reconsider what we call this feature
- Further optimize how groups are selected to appear (attempt to make them more
relevant)
- Explore options to allow Groups owners and moderators more granular control
- Give you advance notice when we decide to re-launch this feature
Last but not least, the one thing I want to leave you with is that your
constructive feedback is very valuable to us. While not everyone may agree, it
is the responsibility of the Groups team to take the entire Groups community
into consideration when thinking about new product features and solutions. This
includes Groups owners and moderators as well as Groups members and in this
case, we saw that group members found value in this feature based on the test
results.
Thank you once again for your effort to share your thoughts with us!
Please post any comments to the Groups blog:

As many of you know, we hosted our third ever Groups Moderator Town Hall event
in the Dallas area in early March.
At these events, we give local moderators an opportunity to come together to
meet and exchange ideas with other Groups owners and moderators in their area,
meet members of the Yahoo! Groups team, and ask direct questions of the team in
a panel discussion. The feedback and suggestions we hear at these events
provides the team with yet another avenue to identify opportunities to make
improvements to the Yahoo! Groups product.

a portion of our very first event, please visit the Groups blog:

On April 2, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM PST, we will be conducting emergency planned
maintenance on the Groups site. During this time, some groups will become
unavailable for up to 30 minutes. Mail to some groups may also be delayed for
up to 60 minutes.
Thanks,
Yahoo! Groups Team
Tomorrow, April 9, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM PT, we will once again be conducting
scheduled maintenance on the Groups site. During this time, some groups will
become unavailable for up to 30 minutes. Mail to some groups may also be delayed
for up to 60 minutes.
Thank you for your understanding,
Yahoo! Groups Team
Just a quick announcement to let folks know that due to abuse of the invite
feature within Groups (it's being used to send spam), we've been forced to
remove the ability for group moderators to customize invitations (or “add”
messages) until further notice.
If you need to send a customized invitation, one work around is simply to send
users a personal email with a direct link to the “join” page. This link will
be:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NAME_OF_YOUR_GROUP/join (where
“NAME_OF_YOUR_GROUP” is replaced with the actual name of your group).
Sending this link to someone is exactly the same as sending an invitation,
except that if your group requires approval of new members, you will still have
to approve them after they complete the join form.
Thanks for your understanding.
Yahoo! Groups Team
Because I've received a number of emails with the same questions, I wanted to
take the opportunity to post answers for all to see:
Q. What about closed groups? I'm a listowner of a closed group and the only way
to add members is for me to send an invitation from the website.
A. You can still invite members by sending an invitation from your group; you
just can't personalize the invitation. If you wish to send a personal message
with an invitation, you might send a heads up via email prior to sending the
group invite.
Q. Why not reinstate the feature and just limit to number of addresses in each
invite to say 5 or something?
A. Putting in such a low limit would impact all users using the feature and
still would not stop the spammers exploiting the custom message feature.
Q. What about the "add" feature? Will we still be able to do that?
A. The add feature and the invite feature will work the same in that the ability
to write a custom message will be removed for the same reasons.
Q. Punishing all Yahoo groups because of a minority of 'bad actors' within Yahoo
groups is just plain silly. Why can Yahoo just close down the Yahoo group that
is abusing the invite feature?
A. Closing down abusing groups does not solve the problem as these spammers
just create new groups at a very rapid pace.
Please post any additional questions to the Groups blog:
http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/?p=64
Thank you.

In celebration of Earth Day this year, Yahoo! is focusing on one of the most
important themes of environmentalism: Reuse. Check out the Yahoo! “Free is
Good” microsite: http://green.yahoo.com/earth-day featuring Freecycle and
other Reuse groups. For those of you not familiar with Freecycle and other Reuse
groups, these are groups that encourage people in local communities to give and
receive “free” goods from their neighbors. To inspire more activity and
encourage exploration of what these resuse groups have to offer, from now until
May 4th, Yahoo! will “hide” special prizes in randomly selected Freecycle
and other reuse groups posts. These prizes are specifically eco-friendly in
nature (e.g. a Smart car, organic food delivery, eco-resort trip, concert
tickets to Sheryl Crow, other locally relevant cool prizes and my personal
favorite – toilet paper – b/c that just isn’t reuseable!). Also featured
on the “Free is Good” microsite are real stories from real people who have
found “treasures” on Freecycle.
