Spring 2009: Concepts & Categories: Contemporary Russian Cognitive
Linguistics (RUS 3030; deadline October 1, 2008)

NOTE: The University of Tromso does not charge tuition, so the only costs
involved are travel and living expenses. The Erasmus program may provide
funding for students from EU countries, and other funding opportunities may
be available for students from other countries.

The only requirements are that students have good knowledge of both English
and Russian and be prepared to study for one semester at the MA level.

Some advantages of studying in Tromso:

The key component of this program is an MA-level course in Russian
linguistics taught by Tore Nesset and Laura Janda. In the Spring semester,
the course (RUS 3030) focuses on the crucial affinities of Russian
functional linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics through a series of
articles representing the best of both traditions. Students hone their
analytical abilities through a series of problem sets targeting grammatical
phenomena of Russian. Other highlights include guest lectures and a
symposium showcasing students? research. All students can take advantage of
individualized advising on a topic of their choice, and participate in
empirical research projects, such as ?Exploring Emptiness?, led by Tore
Nesset and Laura Janda.

Student wins international award for paper written in our 3030 course Spring
2008:
Susana Hancock won the 2008 Dr. Joseph Hasek award for the best term paper
written by a graduate student on a topic concerning Czech and/or Slovak
history, politics, or culture written at a university outside the Czech and
Slovak Republics. Susana undertook an analysis of the effect of the do-
prefix on perfectivizing Czech verbs. Her analysis is both based upon and
entails a significant extension of William Croft?s (as yet unpublished) work
on verbal aspect. Susana Hancock?s paper makes a significant contribution to
Croft?s cutting-edge work by showing how the do- prefix effects aspectual
coercion, forcing all types of events to be conceptualized as achievements
(following the Vendlerian tradition of recognizing four types of events).
The award includes a cash prize and is administered by the Czechoslovak
Society of Arts & Sciences (SVU).

In addition to the course in Russian Linguistics, students can choose from
among various tracks emphasizing special strengths of the University of
Tromso:
Russian studies: Further advanced study of Russian language and culture,
with possible special emphasis on popular culture
Theoretical linguistics: State-of-the-art courses in phonology and syntax
through the Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics
Scandinavian studies: Promotes expertise in the history and current
phenomena of Nordic languages
English studies: Polishing of English proficiency and theoretical background
Language acquisition: L1 and L2 acquisition studies drawing upon both
primary experimental research and scholarly articles
Indigenous studies: The languages and cultures of minority groups, with
special emphasis on the Sami of northern Europe.

Thank you for your interest in our University. We are always happy to host

We have a special webpage for our prospective students where you can find
all the information referring to our application procedure, language courses

"Prospective Students" on the left hand side. Both documents should be
signed by your coordinator at home and sent directly to our office together
with your Transcript of records. Please send the documents to: University of
Tromso, Department of Research and Academic Affairs, 9037 Tromso, Norway.
Deadline is 15th of October for the spring semester and 15th of May for the
autumn semester.

The complete course catalogue (in Norwegian and English) is available online
on http://uit.no/studier/emner/. While choosing your courses, please pay
attention to LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION mentioned in the description of the
course. Despite the fact that the entire course catalogue is translated into
English, it does not mean that all the courses are in English! Some courses
are in Norwegian only.
Each course unit has a course code (e.g. GEO - 3104). The letters of the
code is an abbreviation for the (Norwegian) name of the academic subject
(GEO = Geologi (Geology)). Courses fall into five general levels: 0000 -
1000 - 2000 - 3000 - 8000. The numbers of the code refer to the academic
level of the course. 0000 courses are at an introductory level, 1000 courses
at a basic level (Bachelor's degree), 2000 courses at an intermediate level
(Bachelor's degree), 3000 courses at an advanced level (Master's degree) and
8000 courses at PhD level.

Norwegian shortcuts: MatNat (= Faculty of Sciences), SVFak (= Faculty of
Social Sciences), HUMFak (= Faculty of Humanities), JURFak (= Faculty of
Law), MEDFak (= Faculty of Medicine), NFH (= Norwegian College of Fishery
Science). Also "Start of the course" is in Norwegian only. Host means Autumn
and var means Spring. We hope that the Accommodation Office will correct

Уважаемые коллеги! 3-4 октября 2008 года в
Институте проблем передачи информации РАН
им. А.А.Харкевича состоится открытый
международный семинар «Лексикографические
инструменты и методы». Семинар проводится в
рамках международного проекта MONDILEX, в
котором принимают участие организации из
шести славянских стран: Болгарии, Польши,
России, Словакии, Словении и Украины.

Приглашаются все заинтересованные
специалисты.  Желательно заранее сообщить о
своем намерении участвовать по телефону (495)
699-4927 Ирине Евгеньевне Лазурской.

Выступления, скорее всего, будут на
английском языке. Расписание семинара
приводится ниже.

Летом этого года исполнилось 70 лет
известному лингвисту Сандро
Васильевичу Кодзасову. К этой дате был
подготовлен юбилейный сборник под
названием "Фонетика и нефонетика",
включающий около 70 научных статей. 9
октября 2008 года в 18:30 в 9 поточной аудитории
на первом этаже Первого
корпуса гуманитарных факультетов МГУ
состоится презентация этого
сборника. Приглашаем всех желающих принять
участие в этом мероприятии.

Во время презентации желающие смогут
приобрести сборник на условиях
проводимой в этот день специальной акции
(Скидка 50 рублей от
себестоимости экземпляра книги,
составлящей 450 руб). Кроме презентации

«Language contact along the Sepik River»



Abstract:
The Sepik River Basin in New Guinea is a locus of substantial linguistic
diversity, with several genetically related and unrelated languages in
continuous contact. The inhabitants of the area divide into those who live on
the Sepik River ('River dwellers') and those who live in the bush ('Jungle
dwellers'). The two groups differ in their ways of subsistence, knowledge of
each other's languages, and the impact of language contact. I focus on Manambu,
from the Ndu family, spoken by a war-like group of River dwellers, and the ways
its grammar was influenced by the languages of the neighbouring Jungle dwellers,
the Kwoma and the Yessan-Mayo. The lexical influence from the closely related
Iatmul (also spoken by River dwellers) is restricted to a number of ritual
genres (now obsolete). The patterns of interaction between Jungle dwellers and
River dwellers, and the effects of language contact in the Middle Sepik, are
compared to the situation in the multilingual Vaupés area in Northwest
Amazonia. In each case, the different means of subsistence, life-styles and
interactions are responsible for different effects of contact-induced change.
