The 17th European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information,
organized by Heriot-Watt University, takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland,
August 8-19, 2005.

ESSLLI 2005 will be held just after the IJCAI-05, the 19-th
International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, from July 30-th to
August 5-th, also in Edinburgh (see  <http://ijcai05.csd.abdn.ac.uk>
http://ijcai05.csd.abdn.ac.uk).

The ESSLLI Summer Schools are organized under the auspices of FoLLI, the
European Association for Logic, Language and Information.

The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic
and computation. The school has developed into an important meeting
place and forum for discussion for students, researchers and IT
professionals interested in the interdisciplinary study of Logic,
Language and Information.

In previous editions of ESSLLI the courses covered a wide variety of
topics within six areas of interest: Logic, Computation, Language, Logic
and Computation, Computation and Language, Language and Logic.

Foundational courses aim to provide truly introductory courses into a
field. The courses presuppose absolutely no background knowledge. In
particular, they should be accessible to people from other disciplines.

Introductory courses are intended to equip students and young
researchers with a good understanding of a field's basic methods and
techniques, and to allow experienced researchers from other fields to
acquire the key competences of neighboring disciplines, thus encouraging
the development of a truly interdisciplinary research community.

Advanced courses are intended to enable participants to acquire more
specialized knowledge about topics they are already familiar with.

Workshops are intended to encourage collaboration and the
cross-fertilization of ideas by stimulating in-depth discussion of
issues which are at the forefront of current research in the field. In
these workshops, students and researchers can give presentations of
their research.

In addition to courses and workshops there are evening lectures, a
student session and a number of satellite events (to be announced
later). The aim of the student session is to provide Masters and PhD
students with an opportunity to present their own work to a professional
audience, thereby getting informed feedback on their own results. Unlike
workshops, the student session is not tied to any specific theme.

Previous ESSLLI summer schools have been highly successful, attracting
around 500 participants from Europe and elsewhere.

"Лабильные глаголы и типология систем лабильных глаголов"

Лабильность - способность глагола иметь и переходные, и непереходные
употребления - изучалась ещё с 1940-х гг. На этот тип глаголов применительно к
кавказским языкам обратил внимание А.С. Чикобава. Типологическое изучение
лабильности развито в меньшей мере: можно отметить работы В. Дроссарда,
М.Хаспельмата и Е.А. Лютиковой. В докладе я попытаюсь показать, что, выделив
глаголы, для которых характерна лабильность, можно перейти к системам лабильных
глаголов. Свойства систем - однородность или неоднородность класса лабильных
глаголов, семантические классы лабильных глаголов - связаны со свойствами
грамматики языков. Предметом доклада станет выделение параметров систем
лабильных глаголов и выделение классов глаголов, проявляющих лабильность вне
зависимости от черт языка.

starting in the academic year 2005-2006 in the Research Group on
Mathematical Linguistics at Rovira i Virgili University (Tarragona,
Spain).

ELIGIBLE TOPICS

The eligible topics are the group's current or future research
directions:

- Formal language theory and its applications.
- Bioinformatics.
- Biomolecular computing and nanotechnology.
- Language and speech technologies.
- Formal theories of language acquisition.
- Computational neuroscience.

Other related fields might still be eligible provided there exist strong
enough candidates for them.

JOB PROFILE

- The positions are intended to develop a research project in
collaboration with the host institute for 12-24 months.
- They will be filled in under the form of a work contract.
- There is no restriction on the candidate's age.
- Only experienced (top-class) researchers have a real chance to
succeed.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

- PhD holder.
- Not national of any of the 25 European Union member states.
- Not national of any of the European Union candidate states (Bulgaria,
Croatia, Romania, Turkey).
- Researchers from all other countries are eligible provided they have
not spent more than 4 years during the previous 5 years in any of the
above-mentioned European countries.

ECONOMIC CONDITIONS

- The size of the projects will approximately vary between euros 70,000
and 180,000, including the researcher's salary, travel support, and
health insurance.
- The particular conditions for each contract will be the matter of an
agreement by the researcher and the host institute within the format
suggested by the funding agency.
- In the case of researchers from emerging and transition economies and
developing countries, the scheme may include additional provision to
assist them to return to their country of origin, with typically half
the duration of the first phase.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE

It will consist of 3 successive stages:

- a pre-selection based on CV and carried out by the host institute,
- a short proposal, to be evaluated by the funding agency,
- a full proposal, to be evaluated by the funding agency.

SCHEDULE

Expressions of interest are welcome until January 9, 2005. They should
include the researcher's full CV. The outcome of the preselection will
be reported immediately after. For the successful candidates, the
deadline for the submission of the short proposal will be January 19,
2005. Directions, advice and support will be given to them by the host
institute.

After a productive roundtable discussion at the recent AATSEEL
meeting, we have decided to go ahead with the organization of a new
Society for Slavic Linguistics. At this initial stage in the process
our intent is simply to create a "virtual" society, although
eventually we hope to hold scholarly meetings. Our intent is to create
an inclusive scholarly community of people working on linguistic
problems of the Slavic languages. Membership is free and open to all,
regardless of theoretical or methodological orientation, professional
status, or geographic location.


Our first goal is to set up web pages of potential use to Slavic
linguists. These will be maintained by Gil Rappaport at the University

starting in the academic year 2005-2006 in the Research Group on
Mathematical Linguistics at Rovira i Virgili University (Tarragona,
Spain).

ELIGIBLE TOPICS

The eligible topics are the group's current or future research
directions:

- Formal language theory and its applications.
- Bioinformatics.
- Biomolecular computing and nanotechnology.
- Language and speech technologies.
- Formal theories of language acquisition.
- Computational neuroscience.

Other related fields might still be eligible provided there exist
strong enough candidates for them.

JOB PROFILE

- The positions are intended to develop a training + research project
in two phases: 1st phase) 1-2 years staying in an organization in a
third country (i.e. neither in any of the 25 European Union member
states nor in any of the 4 European Union candidate states); 2nd phase)
half of that time approximately staying in the host institute.
- They will be filled in under the form of a work contract with the
host institute.
- There is no restriction on the candidate's age.
- Only experienced (top-class) researchers have a real chance to
succeed.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

- PhD holder.
- National of either any of the 25 European Union member states or of
any of the 4 European Union candidate states (Bulgaria, Croatia,
Romania, Turkey).

ECONOMIC CONDITIONS

- The size of the projects will approximately vary between euros
120,000 and 240,000, including all the concepts: researcher's salary,
travel support, health insurance, etc.
- The particular conditions for each contract will be the matter of an
agreement by the researcher and the host institute within the format
suggested by the funding agency. This will be done before the
researcher's departure to the third country organization.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE

It will consist of 3 successive stages:

- a pre-selection based on CV and carried out by the host institute,
- a short proposal, to be evaluated by the funding agency,
- a full proposal, to be evaluated by the funding agency.

SCHEDULE

Expressions of interest are welcome until January 11, 2005. They should
include the researcher's full CV and mention "track B" in the subject
box. The outcome of the preselection will be reported immediately
after. For the preselected candidates, the deadline for the submission
of the short proposal will be January 19, 2005. Directions, advice and
support will be given to them by the host institute.

  About the Conference

  The mission of the TARK conferences is to bring together researchers
  from a wide variety of fields, including Artificial Intelligence,
  Cryptography, Distributed Computing, Economics and Game Theory,
  Linguistics, Philosophy, and Psychology, in order to further our
  understanding of interdisciplinary issues involving reasoning about
  rationality and knowledge. Topics of interest include, but are not
  limited to, semantic models for knowledge, belief, and uncertainty,
  bounded rationality and resource-bounded reasoning, commonsense
  epistemic reasoning, epistemic logic, knowledge and action,
  applications of reasoning about knowledge and other mental states,
  belief revision, and foundations of multi-agent systems.

  TARK X will occur as part of an 8-week program "Uncertainty and
  Information in Economics", organized by the Institute for Mathematical
  Sciences (IMS), National University of Singapore in the period of 9
  May - 3 July 2005.  TARK X will take place in conjunction with a
  workshop in the program, which is to be held on 6-10 June 2005 (see
  http://www.ims.nus.edu.sg/Programs/uie/index.htm).

  Submissions are now invited to TARK-X.  Strong preference will be
  given to papers whose topic is of interest to an interdisciplinary
  audience, and papers should be accessible to such an audience. Papers
  will be held to the usual high standards of research publications. In
  particular, they should 1) contain enough information to enable the
  program committee to identify the main contribution of the work; 2)
  explain the significance of the work -- its novelty and its practical
  or theoretical implications; and 3) include comparisons with and
  references to relevant literature. For submission method, please refer

  Abstracts should be no longer than ten double-spaced pages (4,000
  words). The LaTeX submissions should start with the lines:

  Optional technical details such as proofs may be included in
  an appendix. An email address of the contact author should be
  included.

  Papers arriving late or departing significantly from these
  guidelines risk immediate rejection.  One author of each accepted

  Economists should be aware that special arrangements have been made
  with certain economics journals (in particular, with International
  Journal of Game Theory, Games and Economic Behavior, Journal of
  Economic Theory, Econometrica, Theory and Decision, and Mathematical
  Social Sciences) so that publication of an extended abstract in TARK
  will not prejudice publication of a full journal version.

  The registration fee for the conference will be low, with an additional
  reduction for students.  The participants will be offered a room
  in a 4* hotel at a special price not exceeding 90 US$ per day.

Арчи: возвращение в Дагестан



В 2004 г. докладчики побывали в экспедиции в высокогорном селении Арчи
(Цурибский район республики Дагестан). Окруженные по преимуществу авароязычным
населением, арчинцы говорят на языке лезгинской группы, ареал которого ограничен
аулом Арчи и близлежащими <хуторами>. С арчинского языка берет начало полевая
школа МГУ - именно сюда в 1967 г. приехала первая из дагестанских экспедиций
А.Е. Кибрика, ставших потом традиционными. В 1977 г. появился четырехтомная
грамматика арчинского языка; это описание, по крайней мере в некоторых аспектах,
считается одной из самых полных описательных грамматик малого языка. Докладчики
расскажут о том, чем можно заниматься в <самом описанном языке Дагестана>, а
также о своих впечатлениях от общения с арчинцами.

Тридцать лет спустя

Арчи: возвращение в Дагестан



В 2004 г. докладчики побывали в экспедиции в высокогорном селении Арчи
(Цурибский район республики Дагестан). Окруженные по преимуществу
авароязычным населением, арчинцы говорят на языке лезгинской группы, ареал
которого ограничен аулом Арчи и близлежащими <хуторами>. С арчинского языка
берет начало полевая школа МГУ - именно сюда в 1967 г. приехала первая из
дагестанских экспедиций А.Е. Кибрика, ставших потом традиционными. В 1977 г.
появился четырехтомная грамматика арчинского языка; это описание, по крайней
мере в некоторых аспектах, считается одной из самых полных описательных
грамматик малого языка. Докладчики расскажут о том, чем можно заниматься в
<самом описанном языке Дагестана>, а также о своих впечатлениях от общения с
арчинцами.

Мягкие вычисления и нейронные сети;
Мультимедиа и когнитивная графика;

САПР: технологии объектно-ориентированного анализа и проектирования;

Специальная студенческая секция по всем разделам указанной тематики.

Публикация материалов:
1. "Short Paper" (до 4-х страниц) нужно представить до 1 июня 2005г.
2. "Long Paper" (не менее 4 полных страниц).
Тезисы и доклады принимаются только на английском языке по электронной
почте is2005@..., оформленные в соответствии с правилами
представленными на сайте http://www.ulstu.ru/conf/is/. Материалы
конференции будут опубликованы до начала работы конференции.

Взносы за конференцию:
1. Функцию оргвзноса за участие выполняет оплата публикации материалов.
2. Стоимость публикации 1 страницы составляет рублевый эквивалент 10 евро,
на момент перечисления.
3. Стоимость публикации 4 страниц составляет рублевый эквивалент 40 евро,
стоимость публикации дополнительных страниц составляет рублевый
эквивалент 10 евро.

Петербургский семинар по корпусной лингвистике

Сообщаем, что заседание 17 января по ряду причин
/командировка Волкова С.Св., тяжелая сессия у студентов :-)/ отменяется.

Семинар предполагает возобновить свою работу после студенческих каникул
14 февраля 2005 г. Время и место остаются прежние (17.30 - 19.00, Институт
лингвистических исследований РАН, Тучков пер., 9, к. 24 (4-й этаж)).
О возможных изменениях будет сообщено.

Далее 28 февраля,  14, 28 марта и так далее каждые 2 недели.

Так вот хочу перейти на ADSL-интернет (типа СТРИМ) и есть несколько вопросов
к тем, кто уже перешел или просто разбирается:

Есть ли какие-то достойные (как по цене, так и по качеству) предложения на
рынке кроме самого СТРИМ от МТУ-Интел?
Где лучше брать оборудование (модем и проч): у провайдера или самому
покупать?
Реально ли самому справиться с "Настройкой абонентского оборудования"? Или
лучше сразу заплатить провайдеру?
Заявляемая скорость для дешевых тарифов (типа 160/128 кбит/сек) - хорошо ли
это и достигаема ли она на практике?
Как определить есть ли у меня "сетевая карта с интерфейсом Ethernet 10Base-T
(при соединении по Ethernet-кабелю) или USB-портом (при соединении по
USB-кабелю)"?
