Subject: L&C Field Manuals and Stimulus Materials

Dear colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce the launch of the L&C Field Manuals and
Stimulus Materials website, available online at:

http://fieldmanuals.mpi.nl/

The site provides access to many of the field manuals produced by the
Language and Cognition Group at the Max Planck Institute for
Psycholinguistics. It contains a bonanza of material for the field
elicitation of semantics and the field collection of verbal behaviour. These
are unique resources that have been compiled over nearly twenty years of
investigation of under-studied languages.

In many cases, the design of the tasks has been refined over recurrent field
seasons, yielding well-adapted sensitive instruments for investigating e.g.
semantic distinctions in a language without a writing system or a culture
with only minimal schooling. In this way, the tasks are the joint product of
many scholars working in over 50 languages and cultures.

For years these field manuals have been available on demand, but they have
now been put online for the first time, and this site will serve as the
online repository for both older manuals as well as new ones currently under
development. Free registration is required to access the materials.

You can find the L&C Field Manuals and Stimulus Materials at
http://fieldmanuals.mpi.nl/

Best,

Mark Dingemanse

Rethinking Contact Induced Change

Leiden, June 9-11, 2011

act.html
<http://www.hum.leiden.edu/lucl/research/conferences/upcoming-conferences/langua\

Celebrating the transfer of the online Journal of Language Contact to
Brill publishers in Leiden (see http://www.jlc-journal.org/) this
conference is sponsored by Brill, on request of the founding editor of
the Journal, Robert Nicola. The conference can be seen as the follow-up
to the 2007 symposium in Leipzig, see :

http://www.unice.fr/ChaireIUF-Nicolai/Archives/Symposium/Index_Symposium.html

This conference addresses a number of fundamental questions in the
domain of contact-induced change that have emerged from the debate in
the last decades and also aims to formulate new questions. Robert
Nicola, the founding father of the Journal of Language Contact, will

We aim at contributions that assess the main issues based on empirical
data, but with a wider view of the theoretical consequences of these
data, and specifically invite abstracts for proposed papers or posters
on the following issues:

- Is there a difference in output of contact-induced change in language
maintenance situations and in language shift situations?

- Do mixed languages, creoles, and metatypized languages (in the
definition of Malcolm Ross) reflect essentially different histories of
language contact than other languages, or do they constitute the edges
of a continuum?

- To what extent do structural differences and similarities between the
languages in contact shape the way they influence each other?

*Invited speakers:*

Alexandra Aikhenvald, Robert Nicola, Malcolm Ross, Don Winford.

The conference will take place over two and a half days, namely
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning, and in line with the aim to
address and discuss the fundamental issues we will not have parallel
sessions. Papers will be selected on the basis of anonymous abstracts.
Presentations are twenty minutes with an additional ten minutes for
discussion. In addition we have an option of poster presentation. Poster
presenters will be given the possibility to introduce their poster for 3
minutes during a plenary session. Prospective presenters can opt for a
paper or poster or paper/poster presentation. The last category is for
those who are interested in doing a poster in case their abstract for a
paper is not accepted. Abstracts should be in by November 30, 2010 and
notification will be sent out before January 31, 2011. Selections of
abstracts is done by the organizing/scientific committee.

The conference languages are English and French.

*Scientific Committee:*

Robert Nicola, Maarten Kossmann, Maarten Mous, Dick Smakman

*Organizing Committee:*

Esrih Bakker, Martine Bruil, Jenia Gutova, Maarten Kossmann, Maarten
Mous, Alexander Schwager, Dick Smakman.

*Registration:*

The general conference fee is 50 euro.

*/How to submit an abstract:/*

Send your (anonymous) title and abstract as an email attachment
to: RCIC@... <mailto:RCIC@...>

Subject header: (your last name) RCIC abstract

Please include the following in the body of the email:

Author's name(s)

Abstract title

Contact information: email, phone, fax

*/Abstract specifications:/*

Maximum length: 500 words or 1 single-spaced page

Format: If possible .pdf.

Language: English or French.

Put the following information at the top of your abstract:

Category: oral; poster; either oral or poster (please choose)

Name: Give a filename similar to the subject header

*Anonymity:* Abstracts must be anonymous. Do not put your name or other
identifying information on the abstract. Also, please anonymize your
file by removing identifying information. Usually this can be done using
the following two pull-down menus:

File > document properties > description (remove name of author)

View > comments (though an abstract is unlikely to have comments, check
this and remove any comments, as they will show your username)

View > review tracker (ditto)

You might also check:

Acrobat > preferences > identity (to keep your identity off the .pdf,
leave all fields blank).

*/Categories of submission:/*

1) Individual oral presentation (single- or multiple-author): 20 minutes
+ 10 minutes for discussion.

2) Poster: One or more poster sessions will be organized, depending on
demand.

3) Oral or poster: This means you prefer an oral presentation but would
also be willing instead to do a poster. If there are more good abstracts
than we can accommodate, a Program Committee will schedule some as
posters. If you choose either the "poster" or "oral or poster" category,
you will increase your chances of acceptance.

the Dynamics of Language: Theory and Implications /organis Leipzig

questions. Robert Nicola, fondateur du /Journal of Language

*Confrenciers invits :*

Alexandra Aikhenvald, Robert Nicola, Malcolm Ross, Don Winford.

http://web.mit.edu/yanovich/www/moss/

E-mail
moss.conf@...

целом;
-- теории, позволяющие нетривиально описать
полисемию дискурсивных частиц;
-- синтаксическое поведение дискурсивных
позиция;
-- случаи, когда у дискурсивных частиц есть
собственные аргументы;
-- грамматикализация дискурсивных частиц.

MIT Working papers in linguistics.

http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/customhome.cfm?emeetingid=0202J84658B6765A408\
040441

Рабочий язык конференции - английский;

TOWARD A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF MILYAN INSCRIPTIONS

There are only 2 Milyan inscriptions known to us; their understanding is
made somewhat easier by the existence of several hundred Lycian inscriptions
closely related to Mil.; all are written in alphabetic Lyc.-type writing.
Mil. inscr. are 2500 years old; they were written in Lycia (now S.-W.
Turkey). At that time Mil. was a dead language (this fact is indicated by
specific misspellings). Both Mil. & Lyc. belong to the Late Anat[olian], or
Hittite-Luw[ian] (Indo-European) languages.

Both Mil. inscr. are poetic; they are frequently called poems. They contain
relatively long str[ophes], 51 all-in-all. The older Mil. inscr. 55 from
Antiphellos (numbers are from the List of Lyc. inscr.) was engraved at the
socle of a sarcophagus built by a rich Lycian Pixre for himself and his
wife. This text, as it seems, was a real inspiration for Lyc. ruler Xerei
who composed his own poem in Mil. (a part of 44c & the whole text 44d): this
is a part of the Xanthos stele / pillar (it starts with an independent Lyc.
text, followed by Greek and then by Mil.). Above the text there is Xerei's
grave placing. The monument is decorated by a bas-relief, representing '12
gods' (= protecors of the grave) with a larger figure in the center:
apparently, the deceased ruler who became a god.

Mil. inscr. are considered difficult for understanding. This situation was
not helped by two recent Lyc. dictionaries which contain Mil. lexics: one by
Melchert (3rd ed. '04), another one by Neumann (edited after his death by
Tischler, '07). Still, if one uses Melchert's Dictionary (2004), one can
'automatically' get several intelligible passages as a basis for further
advancement. (Note, though, that many grammatical forms are wrongly
identified by M[elchert] who frequently based his judgment on formal
appearance, not on a text analysis).

As an example of a 'new' approach to Mil. texts I'd like to analyze here
strophe IX of 44c:

[1st part of it:] 'The Protector was coming back from fights thrice 12
times' (i.e, 36x; a lot; this almost certainly is about high commander Xerei
at the time when Xeriga was Lyc. ruler).

[2nd pt.:] seb(e) (and) ebe (he) : utakija : trMmiliz : tbiplE : trpplE :
tuburiz : pduradi: xuzruwEtiz

M. correctly translates pddura-di as 'brings'; trMmili-z as acc. pl.
'Lycians'; then tuburi-z are 'people from Tyberissos' [= Lyc. allies]; words
tbiplE trpplE (E = nasalized []) as 'twice thrice' (but without indication
of their grammatical meaning). Incorrect, though, 2 words were determined:

both qirzE and utakija as accusatives, but there are no cases of acc. duplex
in Milyan inscr-s, and

we already have accusatives: trMmili-z: tuburi-z :xuzruwEti-z (where the 3d
form is an attribute).

There is just one possibility for qirzE: gen. pl. in -E (the only such
ending) and for utakija: dat./allat.

(It became clear lately that gen. pl. qirzE means 'of shares', and dat. ut-e
means 'for presenting').

We come, as it seems, to just one possibility (note that tbiplE : trpplE
have gen. pl. ending -E, too):

'And (he) brings Lycians for payments? (to them) of double shares, and
Tuburans -of triple shares'.

So, commander Xerei was coming from fights very many times, each time
rewarding his army. (Next strophe confirms this version: we see that, during
his many wars, Xerei became Lyc. ruler).

In a similar way, some other strophes are being analyzed and explained.

As a result, we are getting a better understanding of the contents of Pixre's
& Xerei's writing.

It also becomes clear that Pixre's poem (55) has strongly influenced that by
Xerei (44c-d), especially its part 44c (14 strophes, as 55; part 44c is, in
many aspects, a copy of 55).

We also see that Mil. inscriptions have a complex, multi-dimensional
structure, totally different from hundreds of standard Lyc. inscriptions.

PROSODY AND DISCOURSE

Warsaw, 26 November 2010

Institute of Applied Linguistics, Warsaw University

Session website:

http://globe.ils.uw.edu.pl/index.php?section=9&subsection=1

The objective of the session is to present the recent research findings on
the role of prosodic features, such as intonation, voice quality, rhythm,
tempo and duration, in the construction of discourse. The present session
aims to bring together researchers working on the topics relating to the
interaction of prosody and pragmatic meaning and to provide a forum of
discussion in order to share insights and inspire new research in this area.
Implications for teaching and translation are also of interest.
We seek papers addressing prosodic aspects of discourse meaning from the
perspective of

•     discourse analysis;
•     conversation analysis;
•     pragmatics;
•     rhetoric;
•     (im)politeness theories;
•     critical linguistics;
•     cross-cultural studies;
•     applied linguistics (language teaching and interpreting);

interaction

The plenary session will be held in English. We invite papers/workshop
proposals in English, Polish, French, German, Russian and Spanish.

In order to submit a proposal, please

• send an abstract in English (200-300 words, preferably in PDF file) and
specify your preferred language of presentation (English, Polish, French,
German, Russian, Spanish);

• (optionally) attach an audio (or audiovisual) file (some 3 minutes of
interaction that will be analysed during the section session);
No strictly theoretical papers will be accepted. Speakers will be given 20
minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.

DEADLINE EXTENSION

Paper proposals should be sent by October 1st 2010 to jmolczanow@...;

The Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University announces nine
doctoral student posts linked to the Special Doctoral Programme in
Language and Linguistics. Ref no SU 617-2294-10. Deadline for
applications: October 15, 2010.

More information on the vacancies and instructions for application are
found here:

http://www.fosprak.su.se/pub/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=14627

The Special Doctoral Program in Language and Linguistics offers a
qualified doctoral program with focus on the systematicity and
structure of language, i.e. with focus on the traditional core areas
of linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, as well as semantics
and pragmatics. The thesis should be based on empirical material
derived from one or more languages, preferably with a cross-linguistic
or diachronic perspective.

The special doctoral program will accept applicants from all areas of
language study at the departments within the Faculty of Humanities
that have supervisor capacity. Thesis topics should be theoretically,
methodologically, or empirically linked to the focus of the program.
It is consequently important for applicants to be familiar with the
profile of the special doctoral program, which can be found on the
homepage: www.fosprak.su.se

For additional information contact the research secretary for the
special doctoral program, Farah Moniri: telephone: 46-(0)8-16 23 43,

As a result, we are getting a better understanding of the contents of
Pixre's
& Xerei's writing.

It also becomes clear that Pixre's poem (55) has strongly influenced that by
Xerei (44c-d), especially its part 44c (14 strophes, as 55; part 44c is, in
many aspects, a copy of 55).

We also see that Mil. inscriptions have a complex, multi-dimensional
structure, totally different from hundreds of standard Lyc. inscriptions.

CALL FOR PAPERS: WORKSHOPS, POSTERS AND GENERAL SESSION

Workshops, posters and individual papers are invited on any topic
belonging to the field of linguistics. One person may submit a
  single-authored paper, a single-authored paper and a co-authored one
(not as first author) or two co-authored papers (only one as first
author). Note that keynote papers within workshops count as ordinary
papers. Presentations will be 20 minutes plus 10 minutes question
  time.

All abstracts have to be registered and sent to the Scientific
  Committee by 15 January 2011.

GENERAL SESSION - WORKSHOPS. General session papers can deal with any
topic in linguistics. Workshop papers take into account the topic of
the workshop proposal, and are usually pre-selected by the workshop
convenors before they are submitted to the scientific committee (SC).
The acceptance of a paper depends on the quality of the abstract.

Abstracts will be read by three referees. Abstracts submitted to the
general session and to the poster session will be evaluated by three
members of the SC. Workshop papers receive two evaluations by SC
members and one by the convenors. The threshold for acceptance is the
same for general session, poster and workshop abstracts. The
acceptance rate of the previous conferences was 60% for the general
  session.

As of SLE 2009 more than half of the presentations have taken place
within the framework of thematic workshops. Workshop proposals should
  contain:

  (i) A 1000 word description of the topic (including the research
  questions to be addressed) and
(ii) a provisional list of workshop participants and a short
  description of their topics.

We encourage workshop convenors to distribute an open call for papers
on the LinguistList (announce your cfp as a session of SLE 2011) and
other fora. The deadline for the submission of workshop proposals is
15 November 2010. Workshop proposals will be evaluated and ranked by
the SLE Scientific Committee. Notification of acceptance will be
given by 15 December 2010. After a workshop proposal has been
accepted, the convenors will be requested to invite their
participants to submit their full abstracts by 15 January 2011.

Since we want conference participants to be able to attend individual
workshop presentations, SLE workshops have to be compatible with the
main conference schedule. This means that the format of the workshops
must be organized around 30 minute presentations (20 min. + 10 min.
discussion). Workshops can contain 10 or 15 slots (corresponding to 1
or 1.5 days); each workshop ideally comprises:

  1. An introductory paper by the convenor(s) or by a key-note speaker,
which summarizes previous research, specifies the approach(es) to be
taken and sets the scope of the papers to be presented.

  2. Eight papers (1 day) or thirteen papers (1.5 day).

  3. A slot for final discussion on the topics covered by the papers,
methodological issues and questions for future research.

Further details can be discussed with the SLE Conference Manager.

POSTERS. The next SLE meeting will hold a poster session of an hour
for both senior and junior researchers. Posters and oral
presentations will be evaluated according to the same quality
standards. In order to foster interaction, all other sessions will be
  suspended during the poster session.

The maximum size of the poster is 1.10 m x 1 m. For more information
about how to make a good poster, click here:
  http://people.eku.edu/ritchisong/posterpres.html

  GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION

Abstracts should not exceed 500 words (exclusive of references) and
should clearly state research questions, approach, method, data and
(expected) results. The abstract will also contain three to five key
words specifying the (sub)field, the topic and the approach.

The deadline for all abstracts (for the general session, the poster
session and the workshops) is 15 January 2011. Notification of
acceptance will be given by 31 March 2011.

Submit your title through the Submit Abstract form
  http://wwwling.arts.kuleuven.be/conference/admin/SubmitAbstractSLE
where you can upload your abstract as an attachment. The abstract
should not mention the presenter(s) nor their affiliations or
addresses. Abstracts are preferably in Word or .RTF format; if your
abstract contains special symbols, please include a pdf version as
  well.

PRIZE FOR THE BEST PRESENTATION AND THE BEST POSTER

There will be a prize for the best oral presentation by a PhD
student, a prize for the best oral presentation by a postdoc and a
  prize for the best poster.

For current purposes, PhD-students are students that have not
completed their PhD before the conference. Postdocs have completed
their PhD not earlier than January 2008. A nominated paper may be
co-authored; in such a case the nominee will be the first author.

Applicants are invited to mark the button referring to the prize when
they register their abstract. On the basis of the ranking of the
abstracts, the Scientific Committee will set up an internal shortlist
  with nominees for the prizes.

Members of the Editorial Board of Folia Linguistica (Historica) and
the Scientific Committee will decide who will be awarded the first
prize in each category, which consists of 500 euros and the 2nd and
3rd prize, which is a three-year SLE membership
  http://www.societaslinguistica.eu/membership/join.php.

  REGISTRATION

Registration will start from 1 April 2011 onwards. SLE 2011 keeps the
SLE 2010 conference fees (see our website http://www.societaslinguistica.eu/).

  (Timothy Williamson)
"The Logic and Semantics of Vagueness" .

The ancient sorites paradox makes vivid the threat that
vague expressions pose to classical logic and semantics
based on the true/false distinction. Two main non-classical
approaches to the logic and semantics of vague languages
will be considered: fuzzy logic and supervaluationism. Fuzzy
logic replaces the true/false dichotomy by a continuum of
degrees of truth. However, it relies on a principle of
degree-functionality (generalizing truth-functionality) with
implausible consequences in various examples.
Supervaluationism handles those examples more satisfactorily
by rejecting truth-functionality and degree-functionality.
However, both non-classical approaches run into trouble with
the phenomenon of higher-order vagueness (borderline cases
of borderline cases). As an alternative, epistemicism
retains both classical logic and the true/false dichotomy:
in borderline cases, the relevant sentence is either true or
false, but speakers have no way of finding out which. Their
ignorance can be explained on the basis of independently
plausible epistemic principles. Higher-order vagueness is
equated with a special form of ignorance of ones own
ignorance.

Langage (CNRS RRE 2559) which brings together researchers in L1 and L2
language acquisition, sign language linguistics and comparative syntax and
semantics.

We encourage submissions exploring the linguistic means used to establish
the reference of a nominal expression,
focusing on the following questions:
- what is the role of definite and indefinite articles in establishing the
reference of the DP?
- how are the effects of definite and indefinite articles achieved in
languages that lack those articles?

We invite submissions for 25-minute presentations (plus ten-minute
discussions). Abstracts should be at most 2 pages in length (including
examples and references) written in French or English.

Abstracts must be anonymous and should be sent by e-mail (plain ASCII, rtf,
