In this new issue of Periferia are shown not ony the diversity of ongoing investigations but the own drift of Anthropology in the Academia through two important figures for our national graduate students, Lluís Mallart and Joan Prat. The themes and interests of their career are especially important in this moment when the education and professional Anthropology must fit in the new structure in the University.

The challenge is to retain the versatility and breadth of the research field that characterizes the discipline. The articles in this issue are a proof of that.

A new virtue? Imaginaries and regimes of mobility across the globe

Convenors:
Noel B. Salazar (University of Leuven, Belgium): noel.salazar@...
Pál Nyíri (Free University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands): p.nyiri@...

Discussant:
Ulf Hannerz (Stockholm University, Sweden): ulf.hannerz@...

Short abstract:
This panel discusses and ethnographically compares how various forms of
border-crossing human (im)mobilities are given meaning and are discursively
framed as virtues or vices in societies and cultures across the globe, both
today and in a historical perspective.

Long abstract:
It is fashionable to imagine the world in motion, with people, objects and ideas
traveling worldwide. Mobility is celebrated not just by literati elites but also
by governments, including those that have until recently restricted it. Yet the
same states are raising the barriers of certain kinds of mobility ever higher.
Anthropologists were among the first to point out that not all mobilities are
valued equally positively and that the very processes that produce global
mobilities also result in immobility and exclusion. Drawing on a thematically
and geographically diverse set of ethnographic studies, this panel discusses and
compares how various forms of border-crossing human (im)mobilities are
discursively framed as a virtue or vice in societies and cultures across the
globe, both today and in a historical perspective. Individual papers advance
anthropological takes on the so-called "mobility turn" in the social sciences by
giving ethnographically-informed answers on the following questions: Which forms
of translocal mobility are currently desirable (whether they are accessible or
not) and to whom, and how does the current situation compare to the past? Which
socio-cultural meanings and values are given to these mobilities and by whom?
What is the analytical purchase of (im)mobility as an overarching conceptual
framework to study and understand the current human condition? Is mobility a
better concept-metaphor to understand the contemporary world than sedentarity?
Why is mobility (not) the next grand narrative in anthropology or the social
sciences at large? Contributions on "newly mobile" societies (e.g. China, Russia
and India) are particularly welcome.

Submission of abstracts:
Online: http://www.nomadit.co.uk/easa/easa2010/panels.php5?PanelID=575
Apart from your contact details, you are asked to supply a paper title, a short
300-character abstract, and a 250-word abstract (NB: the electronic submission
software is strict about this and the character count includes spaces).
Deadline: 1 March 2010

In the name of a whole Polish MASN Team I would like to introduce and invite you for..

The 7th MASN Conference 'Ethics and Human Rights in Anthropological Perspective'

Conference takes place in KrzyÂżowa, Poland
March 24th – 28th 2010

For news about this conference visit Polish's MASN section website: http://www.masn- poland.cba. pl/

Conference days will be divided in morning (papers presentation) and afternoon (roundtable discussions, workshops) sessions as well as fringe events (excursions, exhibitions, performances, films and other) in the evening. Each of the full conference days will be devoted to one of the subtopics.
Subtopics
1.Anthropology of Development
2.Fieldwork Dilemmas
3.Human Rights – Relativity and Universalism of Categories

Anthropology of Development:
Development, a term which evolved from western idea of progress is nowadays widely used to describe the improvement of human living conditions. What we would like to discuss is, how the idea of development influences various cultures, and how it is influenced by them, and finally, what is the price we pay for development. We are interested in comparative studies of the idea of development as well as in fieldwork experiences of young researches.

Fieldwork Dilemmas:
For this subtopic we invite papers, workshops and roundtables concerning the dilemmas ahtropologists face while researching cultures which axiological systems are totally different from their own and strategies they develop to cope with the disonance. Young anthropologists presenting their papers on their own ethical dilemmas during the fieldwork would be much favoured.

Human Rights – Relativity and Universalism of Categories:
Are Human Rights an universal set of principles valid for every human being, despite their creed, colour and culture, as they are meant to? Or are they just another form of western colonialism? Shall the antropologist protect these values or rather accept cultural norms which contradict them, no matter how oppressive they are? Is relativity of qualities all that we are left with in the multitude of cultures or can we speak about uniersality of some of them? On the third day we will try to propose answers to some of those questions.

Structure of the Conference:

The morning sessions will allow the presentation of 3 papers. Each selected presenter will be given 20 minutes for his/her presentation, which is planned to be followed by a discussion of up to 30 minutes. There will also be room for short breaks between presentations.

The afternoon sessions are open for Roundtable discussions (approx. 2 hours long) headed by one or two selected moderators, who may provide further space for picking up on discussions from the morning sessions. Additionally there will be workshops (2-4 hours long) organized by selected participants.

Furthermore additional events will give space for exhibitions, performances, the development of radio programs, film and theatre projects, or other ideas.

Further information, call for papers and others will appear soon!

Ewa

The 7th MASN Conference 'Ethics and Human Rights in Anthropological Perspective'

Conference takes place in Krzyżowa, Poland
March 24th – 28th 2010

For news about this conference visit Polish's MASN section website:
http://www.masn-poland.cba.pl/

Conference days will be divided in morning (papers presentation) and afternoon
(roundtable discussions, workshops) sessions as well as fringe events
(excursions, exhibitions, performances, films and other) in the evening. Each of
the full conference days will be devoted to one of the subtopics.
Subtopics
1.Anthropology of Development
2.Fieldwork Dilemmas
3.Human Rights – Relativity and Universalism of Categories

Anthropology of Development:
Development, a term which evolved from western idea of progress is nowadays
widely used to describe the improvement of human living conditions. What we
would like to discuss is, how the idea of development influences various
cultures, and how it is influenced by them, and finally, what is the price we
pay for development. We are interested in comparative studies of the idea of
development as well as in fieldwork experiences of young researches.

Fieldwork Dilemmas:
For this subtopic we invite papers, workshops and roundtables concerning the
dilemmas ahtropologists face while researching cultures which axiological
systems are totally different from their own and strategies they develop to cope
with the disonance. Young anthropologists presenting their papers on their own
ethical dilemmas during the fieldwork would be much favoured.

Human Rights – Relativity and Universalism of Categories:
Are Human Rights an universal set of principles valid for every human being,
despite their creed, colour and culture, as they are meant to? Or are they just
another form of western colonialism? Shall the antropologist protect these
values or rather accept cultural norms which contradict them, no matter how
oppressive they are? Is relativity of qualities all that we are left with in the
multitude of cultures or can we speak about uniersality of some of them? On the
third day we will try to propose answers to some of those questions.

Structure of the Conference:

The morning sessions will allow the presentation of 3 papers. Each selected
presenter will be given 20 minutes for his/her presentation, which is planned to
be followed by a discussion of up to 30 minutes. There will also be room for
short breaks between presentations.

The afternoon sessions are open for Roundtable discussions (approx. 2 hours
long) headed by one or two selected moderators, who may provide further space
for picking up on discussions from the morning sessions. Additionally there will
be workshops (2-4 hours long) organized by selected participants.

Furthermore additional events will give space for exhibitions, performances, the
development of radio programs, film and theatre projects, or other ideas.

Further information, call for papers and others will appear soon!

Ewa

==============
What I liked in anthropology was its inexhaustible faculty of negation, its relentless definition of man, as though he were no better than God, in terms of what he is not. (Beckett)
